Mercy Ships Founder Receives Service Award

Don Stephens was presented with a Daily Point of Light Award this week at a special Mercy Ships event in Houston, Texas. Mercy Ships, a global charity based in Garden Valley, Texas, operates the world’s largest civilian hospital ship. Mercy Ships founder Don Stephens was recognized this week with the Daily Point of Light Award from Points of Light, a U.S. organization dedicated to volunteer service. The national award was presented at a special event held at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston. The event, “Advancing Hope and Healing in Africa,” featured President George W. Bush and Laura Bush.

Submarine Texas Christened at Newport News

First Lady Laura Bush smashed a bottle of champagne to christen the Navy’s newest nuclear-powered submarine Texas (SSN 775) in front of a cheering crowd of 4,500 people at Newport News shipyard July 31. Secretary of the Navy Gordon England joined a number of dignitaries, including Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, who delivered the ceremony’s principal address. “It is entirely fitting that USS Texas will become the latest bulwark, and one of the most powerful, in our arsenal of democracy,” said Hutchison. “When she sets sail, she will do so with 22 million Texans and our nation’s First Lady at her side. Mr. Named to honor the 28th state admitted to the union, Texas is the fourth ship of the U.S. Navy to carry the name since the original Texas was commissioned in 1895.

Laura Bush Authenticates Keel

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector hosted a keel laying ceremony for the second Virginia-class submarine, Texas (SSN 775). Laura Bush is the Ship's Sponsor and served as the keel authenticator for the ceremony. Mrs. Bush authenticated the keel by chalking her initials onto a metal plate. Her initials were then welded and the plate will be permanently affixed to the submarine. "A mighty American submarine deserves a mighty American name," she said. Virginia-class. Texas is the second ship of the Virginia-class. "Skilled professionals will forge the newest alloys and technology into one of the most sophisticated ships in the world," said Mrs. Bush. Navy to Commission Submarine Texas

Sailors stationed aboard the Pre Commissioning Unit (PCU) Texas (SSN 775) stands topside as she gets underway from Naval Station Norfolk. Navy Commissions Attack Submarine Texas

The Navy will commission the USS Texas, second ship of the Virginia attack submarine class, Saturday, Sept. Texas. As the Navy's next-generation attack submarine, the Virginia-class submarine is the first class specifically designed to counter post-Cold War threats, providing the Navy with the capabilities required for safeguarding the nation’s interests in the 21st century. Texas has improved stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that enable it to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements. Texas along with its other sister submarines of the Virginia-class, will be able to accommodate technology upgrades throughout its life. Sen. Texas will deliver the ceremony’s principal address.
