Admiral Briefs Industry on LCS Possibilities

LCS 'USS Freedom' to Deploy Shortly

The littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1) is on track to begin its first deployment March 1, 2013. This milestone was announced by the LCS Council, a group established by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert to oversee continued fleet testing and the introduction of the LCS. LCS ships are designed to employ mission packages that address capability gaps in the areas of surface warfare, mine countermeasures, and anti-submarine warfare. Due to its modular design, each LCS ship can be reconfigured to perform one of those three distinct missions in a short period of time.

Admiral's Thoughts on the LCS Program

The Director, Navy Staff, Vice-Adm. Richard W. Hunt, recommends the LCS council continue, looks to program future. In a recent memo to the Chief of Naval Operations , the Director, Navy Staff, Vice Adm. Richard W. Littoral Combat Ship Council Established by CNO

The US Navy's Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) sets up a high-powered board to oversee introduction of LCS vessels into the Fleet. The council is to be made up of four Navy vice admirals to oversee continued fleet testing and introduction of littoral combat ship (LCS) sea frames, mission modules, and mission packages. The focus of the LCS Council will first be to develop a class-wide plan of action to address the areas identified as needing improvement in recent assessments and reviews. The plan is expected to be implemented by Jan. 31, 2013. CNO Adm.
