The wife of Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary has been charged with careless operation of a vehicle, after she was involved in a boat crash that resulted in two deaths, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said on Tuesday.Police said Linda O'Leary was driving a boat that struck a second boat on a lake in Muskoka, a popular cottage country part of Canada, in late August.In addition to the two fatalities, the accident caused three injuries.If Linda O'Leary is convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison and C$1 million ($755,000) fine, police said.The driver of the second boat, Richard Ruh, 57, of Orchard Park, New York, has also been charged, with failing to exhibit navigation lights.

A new paper ‘Sailing on Solar’, commissioned by Environmental Defense Fund Europe and developed by Ricardo, presents a vision of how international shipping can meet its target of at least halving emissions by 2050 - while also helping developing nations benefit from the emerging clean energy economy.The paper focuses on green ammonia produced from surplus renewable electricity, one of several potential fuels for maritime transport that do not produce greenhouse gases.Green ammonia is a substitute to fossil fuels that can be used in modified shipping engines and in fuel cells. Production of the fuel requires renewable electricity at a large scale.

Wigenton in Newark federal court to an information charging it with violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships.

Liebherr Container Cranes announced it will deliver four ship to shore container cranes to Fenix Container Terminal, Port of Bronka, St. Petersburg, Russia. The cranes were designed in Liebherr Container Cranes, Ireland and manufactured in the state of the art facility in Ireland.The completed cranes were then assembled in the Liebherr Rostock plant and barged through the Baltic Sea to St. Petersburg. The cranes are due to enter operation at the purpose built container terminal on the Baltic sea in the coming weeks.

Five Tasmania Police officers will be recognised for their outstanding contribution to search and rescue tonight at this year’s Australian Search and Rescue Awards in Sydney. Since 1996, the National Search and Rescue Council, which is made up of representatives from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Australian Defence Force and state and territory police services, has presented the Australian Search and Rescue Award to those who have made a significant contribution to Australia’s search and rescue ability or saving of a human life. The winning officers were involved in the rescue of three fishermen off Tasmania’s south west coast on 3 January 2014 in extreme weather conditions.

TOTE Logistics Inc. parent company of Carlile Transportation Systems announced several new company positions. John Armstrong has accepted the Vice President, Logistics position for Carlile Transportation Systems, Inc. John joins Carlile from sister company Alta Logistics, where he was the Director of Logistics. John has leadership, operations and logistical supply chain management experience. John is familiar with both the Alaska and Pacific Northwest Markets, having worked in Alaska for many years.

Linda Leary has accepted the Vice President, Commercial Development position with TOTE Logistics, Inc., Carlile’s parent company. Linda’s new role will be overseeing the Sales and Marketing Department of Carlile, TOTE Logistics, Inc. and Spectrum. Linda will continue to build revenue with current customers and seek new opportunities to continue the positive growth on a much broader logistical scale; maintaining several key accounts and remaining heavily involved in community relations.

“Ninety years is a long time for any company,” said Gerald J. Leary, CEO of Koike, “and the last four years have been the most profitable in our history. This expansion positions us well for the immediate future but we’re not planning on this being our last expansion.” Headcount at Koike has been growing along with capacity:  at the end of April the company employed 172 at its Arcade location. Hinge-Ship is a patented concept designed to combine the advantages of both deep draft and shallow draft shipping within the confines of a single vessel. The concept, if proven viable, could help to further the mandate of shaving valuable time from the transportation of goods from "point A to point B," as it would literally eliminate the need for storage at transshipment points and the transfer of cargo to other vessels, and all of the time and cost inherent in both. I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. Never remiss to incorporate wisdom of the ages for the editorial good, I found this quote — from Oliver Wendell Holmes, The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, 1858 — hanging handily on the wall of my colleague, Charles Keil, on a recent visit to our office in Florida. It concisely summarizes not only the editorial content of this edition, but the various forces that have helped to shape the direction of the maritime industry today. Often erroneously regarded as “set in its ways,” the marine market is in the midst of dynamic changes that touch its very core.
