CMA CGM Bundles Multimodal Transport

The CMA CGM Group announced that its intra-European multimodal transport subsidiaries Containerships and MacAndrews have united under the single Containerships brand.Together, Containerships and MacAndrews operate a fleet of 32 vessels and 700 trucks, calling 64 ports through 26 maritime services and 8 inland services.The single Containerships brand resulting from their union will be able to unlock major synergies and to focus on commercial growth and on the development of high-quality services for its customers.In addition, the integration of the local agencies networks will allow for the creation of a tailored intra-regional service.Guillaume Lathelize…

Laaksonen Resigns as Containerships CEO

Containerships plc’s board of directors announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, has resigned. The board of directors of Containerships plc plans to meet tomorrow to discuss a successor.CMA CGM Group will propose to the board of directors to appoint Claude Lebel, current CEO of Mac Andrews Gmbh, the parent company of Containerships plc, as the new CEO of Containerships plc.Laaksonen will remain in his position until his replacement is effective.

Port of Montreal Plans $132m Expansion

Ottawa government has announced a multimillion-dollar investment for the Port of Montreal, meant to facilitate exports following a new trade deal with Europe. The Port will receive a $132-million makeover in anticipation of an increase in exports. Ottawa will contribute $43.7 million to the project. The remainder of the money will come from the port itself. Federal Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel said the expansion project was "directly linked" to the new trade deal with Europe. He hoped that the Port of Montreal becomes even more of a regional hub and that trade with the EU increases exponentially. The fund will be used toward deepening mooring posts, facilitating the circulation of trucks and increasing the port’s capacity to handle containers.

Entry into service of Canadian Coast Guard's new mid-shore patrol vessel, the CCGS Caporal Kaeble V.C., was inaugurated by The Honorable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, on behalf of the Honorable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Canada aligns with USA to reduce harmful air emissions from ships navigating in Canadian waters. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, has announced that the Government of Canada is adopting stricter environmental standards. Canada acts to upgrade its safety system for shipping oil & liquefied natural gas safely through Canada’s waterways before any major new energy export facilities become operational. Tanker inspections: The number of inspections will increase to ensure that all foreign tankers are inspected on their first visit to Canada, and annually thereafter, to ensure they comply with rules and regulations, especially with respect to double hulls. Canada Makes Marine Atlantic Board Appointment

Sharon R. Duggan has been appointed to the board of Marine Atlantic Inc. by the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. The corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation service between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mission is to provide a safe, environmentally responsible and quality ferry service in a reliable and cost-effective manner. Canada Commissions Maritime Pollution Risk Study

Harper government announces pan-Canadian risk assessment study on marine safety. Verreault Navigation Dry Docks French Coastal Carrier

France's Verreault Navigation sees the vessel 'Georges Alexandre Lebel' through its scheduled dry-docking. The Georges Alexandre Lebel was in the Verreault dry dock from July 30, to August 4, 2012 for various steel work and machinery repair and maintenance programs. In addition to sandblasting  and repainting the hull, the ship's starboard propellor shaft and rudder were dismantled, machined and replaced. One bunker fuel tank was cleaned by high pressure hose. The company felt sure it had kept to its promise to the customer by delivering a timely dry-docking on budget.

Canada Commits to Boating Safety

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, has announced additional funding for the Boating Safety Class Contribution Program. The renewed program, now called the 'Boating Safety Contribution Program' (BSCP), will continue to provide financial contributions to organizations that promote boating safety in Canada and will increase in 2014 to support more initiatives across the country. We are increasing our commitment to boating safety," said Minister Lebel. In addition, Minister Lebel announced the call for proposals under the BSCP for education and awareness projects that promote safe boating practices during the 2013 boating season. Applications for next year's projects will be accepted until November 1, 2012.
