Australian mining giant BHP has taken two KOTUG's tugs on long-term charters to support bulk carrier loadings at Port Hedland, Australia.KOTUG, a Dutch marine services and towage company, said Thursday, its new build Rotortugs RT Imperieuse and RT Clerke had arrived in Port Hedland.Both 32m ART80-32 tugs, built at Cheoy Lee Shipyard, have three Caterpillar main engines, that deliver a total output of 5,295kW each, 13 knots sailing speed, and 80 tons bollard pull power. They are equipped with advanced DMT Escort Winches.

Maersk's towage arm Svitzer announced it has extended its current contract with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) to include two additional tugs amid increasing traffic volumes.The two tugs are +70 tonnes bollard pull newbuilds delivered from the Cheoy Lee Shipyard in China and will be manned by all Egyptian crews. Saam Smit Towage Canada (SST Canada) has purchased two new RAstar 3200 escort tugs from Hong Kong’s Cheoy Lee Shipyards.SST Grizzly and SST Orca, which are designed by Robert Allan Ltd, has departed Cheoy Lee’s Hin Lee shipyard, will arrive Vancouver in early November of this year.The two new escort-rated tugs will join SST Canada’s fleet and begin operations in the southern waters of British Columbia. Scotland based MacDuff Ship Design reports it has had another busy summer and autumn with the delivery of a number of new vessels, work continuing on existing contracts and several new design contracts won. Alongside this has seen the continuation of the companies bureau work in naval architectural consultancy and the steady expansion of MacDuff Marine Surveyors. A new 25.5m Aquaculture Support Vessel has entered service on the West Coast of Scotland having been delivered in September 2017 to owners Inverlussa Marine Services.

Svitzer will provide marine support services for the Excelerate Energy FSRU at Bangladesh’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. Excelerate Energy Bangladesh Limited awarded Svitzer the 15-year contract following a competitive tender process. The contract also includes a five-year option. Bangladesh’s first LNG import terminal, located offshore Moheshkhali Island in the Bay of Bengal, will enable Petrobangla, the state owned energy company, to increase natural gas supply in the country by up to 20 percent, sufficient to support up to 3,000 MW of power generation capacity. The construction of the terminal will commence in the fourth quarter of 2017 and is anticipated to be in service by mid- 2018.

The SENER engineering and technology Group has signed a contract with the company Hin Lee Shipyard Co., Ltd. in Zhuhai, China, for the implementation of the shipbuilding CAD/CAM System FORAN, developed by SENER. After the evaluation of different ship design CAD/CAM systems, the shipyard has finally selected FORAN because its excellent functionalities, which cover all design stages from conceptual design to production design. The scope of the contract includes the installation of the FORAN System, including the Hull Forms, General Arrangement & Naval Architecture, Hull Structure, Automatic Nesting, Machinery & Outfitting, Electrical Design, Build Strategy and Drafting.

A year after PSA Marine, Singapore took delivery of Rubicon, its first ever RAmparts 3200CL tug from Cheoy Lee Shipyards, Hong Kong in December 2013, the same builder has now put four more similar tugs, OLNG Sur, OLNG Seeb, OLNG Masirah and OLNG Muttrah into the hands of PSA Marine Qalhat SAOC. These tugs are similar to their predecessors in this design series, with modifications to suit the owner's requirements for operations at the LNG terminal in the Port of Qalhat in Oman.

The Panama Canal Authority is investing in especially powerful tugs for the Post-Panamax era: 14 tractor tugs and 13 ASD tugs with SCHOTTEL propulsion systems were commissioned in the last four years. The youngest generation of 14 tractor tugs delivered by Astilleros Armon Shipyard was recently completed. One tug after another started in Spain and travelled the high seas for about a month, on their own and under their own power. They have a bollard pull of 85 tons. With a length of 28.90 meters and a width of 13.50 meters, they are a good deal larger than the ASD tugs.

Hong Kong's Cheoy Lee Shipyard has handed over the second in a series of five 50m Towing/Anchor Handling Tugs for Teras Offshore in Singapore. The new AHTS Teras Bethel sailed directly to Batam in Indonesia (dodging a typhoon) where she will enter service. Prior to departure, the vessel and crew were blessed by the reverend Stephen Miller of the Mariners’ Club in Hong Kong. Developed for all engine platforms with electrical specialists Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), the system package utilizes AKA’s XeroPoint Hybrid marine propulsion system and provides fuel savings of up to 25% and even emissions reductions. A recent CARB study found a 73% reduction in PM, 50% reduction in NOx & 26% reduction in CO2. Significant improvements are also seen in performance, control and noise levels. GE Transportation will supply Marinsa, Panama, with 26 V228 diesel engines. The 12-cylinder engines will power 13 new tugboats to be used in the Panama Canal in Panama. “This is a significant order for GE, the largest we’ve received to date in Latin America. We faced stiff competition in the marketplace and are delighted that ultimately our V228 engines were selected for this project,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine and stationary power business, Erie, Pennsylvania. Marinsa is GE’s authorized distributor in Latin America.
