This Day in Coast Guard History – August 6

1878- The last true sailing cutter built for the Revenue Service, Chase (Salmon P. Chase) was completed on 6 August 1878 at the shipyard of Thomas Brown of Philadephia. Barque-rigged, Chase displaced 142 tons and served as a cadet "practice vessel" for nearly 30 years before being decommissioned and transferred to the U.S. Public Health Service. 1918-The first American lightship to be sunk by enemy action, Lightship No. 71, was lost on her Diamond Shoals station. LS 71 had reported by radio the presence of a German submarine which had sunk a passing freighter. That message was intercepted by the submarine U-104, which then located the lightship and, after giving the crew opportunity to abandon ship in the boats, sank LS 71 by surface gunfire.

This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – January 6

1934- The United States Line SS Washington came within inches of ramming the new Light Vessel No. 117 on the Nantucket Station.  The liner scraped the lightship’s side, shearing off davits, a lifeboat, antennas, etc.  Five months later the lightship was sunk by RMS Olympic when it rammed the lightship, killing seven of the lightship's crew. 1973- The U. S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut, announced that its cadets were served "meals for the first time by female civilian employees."  The Academy had "recently became the first of the nation’s service schools to contract their food services to a civilian company."  Previously, Coast Guard personnel had done the serving. This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – December 10

1905-"To evaluate its use in lighthouse work, radio equipment was installed experimentally on Nantucket Lightship in August of 1901. On December 10, 1905, while riding out a severe gale, Lightship No. 58 on the Nantucket Shoals Station sprang a serious leak. There being no recognized radio distress signal at that time, the operator could only repeatedly spell out the word "help". Although no reply was received Newport Navy station (radio) intercepted the call and passed it on to the proper authorities. The lightship tender Azalea was dispatched to the assistance of Lightship No. 58, and upon arrival at the scene passed a towline. The long tow to a safe harbor began, but after a few hours it was quite evident that Lightship No. 58 was sinking.

RI Firm Awarded Aicraft Carrier Support Contract

The Lightship Group, LLC (ASK Services) a Marine and Industrial Support firm located in Wickford, RI has recently been awarded a Navy Contract for Machinery Condition Analysis supporting the Carrier Planning Office aboard U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers and the Associated Battle Groups. The primary objectives of the Machinery Condition Analysis (MCA) program is to provide accurate and timely condition assessments, fault diagnostics and repair recommendations for the rotating propulsion and auxiliary machinery based on vibration analysis, performance data, reviews of maintenance data and visual inspections of machines. This information is used in planning repairs as well as machinery acceptance after repair.

Hvide Completes Lightship Transaction

Hvide Marine Incorporated (HMI) received Hart-Scott-Rodino clearance and has completed the purchase of the remaining 24.25% equity interest in Lightship Tankers LLC previously held by Newport News Shipbuilding. The transaction, originally announced on December 22, is valued at $11 million and gives HMI 100% ownership of these five 1998- and 1999-built double-hull, state-of-the-art product tankers. The five Lightship tankers -- HMI Ambrose Channel, HMI Brenton Reef, HMI Cape Lookout Shoals, HMI Diamond Shoals, and HMI Nantucket Shoals -- are engaged in the domestic Jones Act trade, which limits the shipment of cargo between U.S. ports to U.S.-built, U.S.-crewed, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-owned vessels.

DGLL Pact with IALA

India's Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships (DGLL) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) on 11thAugust, 2016 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With the signing of this MoA, the DGLL Training Centre at Kolkata will be in position to deliver a professional training course on the management of marine aids to navigation in line with IALA model course itself. Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships (DGLL) is primarily responsible for providing “Aids to Navigation service” for safety of mariners in the Indian waters. Historic WW I Shipwreck Survey Underway

Partnering U.S. agencies have commenced surveying the historic shipwreck of an American lightship shelled and sunk by a German U-boat during World War I nearly 100 years ago. Teams from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), on Sunday, August 30, began a survey of the historic wreck of Diamond Shoal Lightship No. 71, the only American lightship to be sunk by enemy action during World War I.

Strategic Marine Delivers Landing Craft

Strategic Marine Australia has successfully delivered three 42.3 ft landing craft to Kuwaiti sales agent Seas and Deserts. The aluminium vessels designed by Strategic Marine and Southerly Designs, have a 42.3 ft length overall, a beam of 13 ft a draught of 1.5 ft. Powered by two 300 horsepower V8, Yamaha outboard motors, these engines pack a punch reaching speeds of over 40 knots at lightship. With a cruising speed of 28 knots the vessels are expected to have the capacity to operate for up to 14 hours, a range of approximately 380 nautical miles fully loaded. The landing craft are designed to carry a High Mobility Multi Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (a.k.a Humvee), or is capable of a 5 tonne payload. The Vessels will operate in the Arabian Gulf region.

This Day in Coast Guard History – March 29

1867-The lighthouse at Timbalier Bay was destroyed in a hurricane. The brick tower "was leveled to the ground and covered with from three to six feet of water."  The Lighthouse Board commended the keepers, "who faithfully performed their duty, barely escaping with their lives, and living for some days in an iron can buoy . 1898-  Lieutenants David Jarvis and Ellsworth P. Bertholf and Surgeon Dr. Samuel J. Call of the USRC Bear reached Point Barrow, Alaska, after a 2,000 mile "mush" from Nunivak Island that first started on 17 December 1897, driving reindeer as food for 97 starving whalers caught in the Arctic ice. This Overland Rescue was heralded by the press and at the request of President William McKinley, Congress issued special gold medals in their honor.

1932-The Steamboat Inspection Service and Bureau of Navigation were combined to form the Bureau of Navigation and Steamboat Inspection (47 Stat. L., 415). The new agency remained under the control of the Commerce Department. 1933-The airways division, which had been conducted as a division of the Lighthouse Service, but under the administrative supervision of the Assistant Secretary for Aeronautics, Department of Commerce, was separated from the Lighthouse Service. (USLHS AR 1933, p. 97). 1939-"At the end of the year, the total number of lighthouse tenders was 65, of which 64 were in commission and ‘.1 was out of commission and advertised for sale. Of the vessels in commission, 42 were steam-propelled, 18 had diesel engines, and 4 had diesel-electric drive.

Shipwreck Causes Oil Spill

The California Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) stated that the U.S. Coast Guard and the OSPR have confirmed that an intermittent oil spill in San Mateo vicinity has been traced to the SS JACOB LUCKENBACH. The vessel sank on July 14, 1953 approximately seven miles southwest of the San Francisco Lightship after colliding with the SS HAWAIIAN PILOT. The Coast Guard's original Report of Investigation reveals that the collision was caused, in part, by poor use of radar. Source: HK Law

Hvide Marine Reports Third Quarter Loss

Hvide Marine Inc. today reported a net loss of $20.1 million or $.129 per diluted share on revenues of $86 million for the quarter ended September 30, 1999. In the period one year earlier, the company had a net income of $3.9 million or $.25 per diluted share on revenues of $100.1 million. Results in the current quarter and year-to-date have been adjusted to reflect the consolidation, as of September 30, 1999 of Lightship Tankers LLC, a 50.7 percent owned subsidiary, which was previously accounted for under the equity method.

This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – November 10

1775-The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to create a "Corps of Marines."  Although they were disbanded in 1783 and were not "re-established" permanently until 11 July 1798, the Marine Corps recognizes 10 November 1775 as their official birthday. Happy Birthday Marine Corps! The Marine Corps' motto is Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful). The Corps takes the commemoration of their birthday seriously:  On 21 October 1921, Major Edwin McClellan, Officer-in-Charge, Historical Section, Headquarters Marine Corps, sent a memorandum to Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune, suggesting that the original birthday on 10 November 1775 be declared a Marine Corps holiday to be celebrated throughout the Corps.

1716-The Boston Lighthouse on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor, the first lighthouse established in America, was first lit. 1944-The Great Atlantic Hurricane, a Category 3 hurricane, made landfall at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Long Island, New York, and Point Judith, Rhode Island. Cape Henry, Virginia, reported sustained winds at 134 MPH with gusts to 150 MPH. There were 46 civilian deaths and $100 million in damage from Cape Hatteras northward through the Maine coast. Cutters Jackson and Bedloe, and Lightship No. 73 on Vineyard Sound Station, foundered. All 12 of the lightship's crew perished. Only 30 of the 78 crewmen aboard the two cutters were saved. Two Navy vessels also foundered. A total of 344 perished at sea.

HMI Ambrose Channel Makes First New York Harbor Call

Hvide Marine Inc. announced the first visit of HMI Ambrose Channel, named for the USCG lightship that formerly stood watch at the entrance of New York Harbor, to the Port of New York and New Jersey. The vessel, one of the first all-new petrochemical carriers built in the U.S. in nearly two decades, passed through its namesake, the Ambrose Channel, on its way to Stapleton Anchorage. Under the command of veteran Hvide Marine Captain Dave Johnson, the tanker delivered 155,000 barrels of diesel oil from a refinery in Baton Rouge, La. Delivered in January 1999, the vessel complied with the mandate of Congress and the American people to build double-hull tankships to transport petroleum and chemical products in U. S. waters in the safest manner possible.

Three Dump Scows Built by Diversified Marine, Inc.

Diversified Marine, Inc. completed three Ala Wai Dump Scows for American Marine Corporation of Honolulu, Hawaii in June 2002. All three scows were built in Portland, Ore. at the Diversified Marine location and towed to Hawaii on barges. Each scow is built with a remote, air driven hydraulically operated control and with certified leak proof rubber seals. American Marine will use the scows for hauling dredged material from the Hawaiian Island waterways. The Glosten Associates, Inc. designed the scows. Length, molded 78.6 ft. Half breadth, hull, molded 12 ft. Beam, maximum o.a. 24.1 ft. Molded, depth, main deck 9.6 ft. Lightship draft 2.6 ft. Design, waterline draft 7.9 ft. Hopper volume, level to top of coaming 300 cu. yd.

Landing Craft Vessel for Alaska Fitted with Triple UltraJets

Armstrong Marine, Port Angeles, WA,  delivered ‘Arctic Solution’, an impressive landing craft to transport equipment and personnel to and from oil producing regions near Prudhoe Bay, AK. ‘Arctic Solution’ was built for Arctic Marine Solutions in Seward, Alaska, to an innovative landing craft design developed by Pat Eberhard, Engineer and owner of CoastWise Corporation. This new new design is co-owned by Arctic Marine Solutions and CoastWise Engineering. When laden this 38.6 ton (85,000 lb.) vessel has an impressive sprint speed of 30 knots (Lightship 35 knots)!

India to Develop 78 Lighthouses as Tourism Centers

The Ministry of Shipping, along with the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) has drawn up an ambitious programme to develop 78 lighthouses in the country as centres of tourism in the first phase under Public Private Partnership (PPP). The identified lighthouses are in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
