Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) got underway for sea trails, May 9, following a four-year refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia. The four-day sea trails marks Abraham Lincoln's first time underway since March 2013. The ship spent its last days in the shipyard completing a five-day "fast cruise," May 2-7, making final preparations for its transit to Naval Station Norfolk. USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) wrapped up two weeks of training and certification with a scheduled port visit to Naval Air Station North Island July 22-24. Lincoln’s crew enjoyed two full days of liberty in the San Diego area while the ship took on personnel and equipment from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 in preparation for the next phase of operations. Prior to the visit, Lincoln spent its first two weeks underway since completing sea trials and a nine-month Dry-dock Planned Incremental Availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. Sailors aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are participating in shipwide exercises beginning March 20, which are aimed at returning the ship and its crew to operational status following an extended stay at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. General Quarters (GQ), engineering, crash and salvage, man overboard, sighting team, security, and other drills are being conducted during simulated underway periods in which the crew operate on an at sea schedule. “The fact that we’re done with most of the work we had to do in the yards means we can shift our focus now to training,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1st Class (AW) Billy Ramirez, leading petty officer of Air Department’s crash and salvage team.
