German shipbuilding has made a significant turnaround. The country’s shipbuilding industry has seen increases in the number of employees, orders and deliveries compared to 2013, according to the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM). The special shipbuilding sector drove this growth, as 20 of the 34 delivered new builds could be classified as high-quality special vessels or naval units. Although VSM announces its annual balance officially in May of each year, MR was able to obtain some early insights into the results.

Damen Shipyards Group has delivered the first vessel in its new ASD Tug 2913 class. According to Damen, the 2913 has been developed in response to demand from operators for more powerful tugs capable of handling today’s larger vessels. As well as having a bollard pull of 80 metric tons and total power of 5,050 BKw, the new tug is 29 meters in length and highly maneuverable, making it suited for operations in busy harbors where space is limited. The ASD 2913 has accommodation for 10 personnel across six cabins and with a beam of 13 meters is very stable.

The ASD Tug 2913 has been designed primarily as a highly manoeuvrable, powerful tug, ideally suited for busy harbours where space is limited. Petersen & Alpers (Germany) is the launching customer for the new tug, which will be delivered end 2014. The new type answers market demand for more powerful tugs as vessels continue to get larger and for more spacious accommodation.

On August 2, ship naming and launching ceremonies for Enercon’s new E-Ship 1 took place at Lindenau GmbH shipyards in Kiel. After launching, the ship will be hauled to the fitting dock where the final details – fixtures, fittings and equipment – will be installed before the ship is delivered in December this year. The ship’s sponsor, Martina Kuhlmann, Enercon executive assistant, christened the vessel and wished the typical German saying: “Immer eine Handbreit Wasser unterm Kiel” which means “always at least as much water under the keel as the hand is wide”…

Winners of the Lloyd’s List-SMM 2002 Awards for innovation in shipbuilding and marine technology were announced in the Hamburg Congress Centre last night (September 24) at a gala ceremony which brought day one of the world’s biggest maritime fair to a glittering conclusion. Several hundred leading industry figures gathered for the final stage of an initiative launched in March by Lloyd’s List and SMM organisers Hamburg Messe to recognise the technical advances which enable maritime commerce and defence. With 13 awards in three merchant and naval categories, the inaugural scheme attracted a massive wave of nominations for ships and support systems reflecting the cutting edge of ingenuity in improving performance, reducing costs and protecting the environment.

Classed by Germanischer Lloyd, the 31,600 dwt Seychelles Pride is a new addition to GL's stable of technologically sophisticated double-hull product tankers. Designed for the transport of chemicals (IMO Type 3), oil, and oil products, it represents a further development of the "Lindenau Safety Tanker Class 2004" which has received a number of international awards for innovative design and safety. Delivered in June 2002, it is the fifth vessel in this successful series to be classed by GL. Built for Seychelles Shipping Lines Ltd. by the Lindenau shipyard at Kiel, the new tanker will be operated by Columbia Shipmanagement Ltd. of Limassol.

The seventh and final Strategic Sealift ship in the BOB HOPE Class will be christened BENAVIDEZ in ceremonies at the Northrop Grumman Corporation Avondale shipyard Saturday, July 21, 2001, beginning at 10 a.m. The new ship will be named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Army Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez, of Lindenau, Tex. Benavidez distinguished himself in a series of daring and extremely valorous actions while in the Republic of Vietnam assigned to Detachment B56, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, U.S. Army. Despite what could be best termed as difficult operating conditions, the German maritime market has persevered through its collective adherence to the principles which propelled it to the lead of the maritime construction and outfitting markets: a steadfast adherence to producing technologically correct and advanced vessels, products and systems. The challenges facing the German maritime market are not unlike those facing many of its European colleagues and competitors, or those facing industrial operations in any of the world's leading economies. The proliferation of lower-cost shipbuilding, ship repair and marine equipment supply options outside of Europe, particularly in Asia, has led to a significant drain on business emanating from and dollars flowing to the German homeland.

Designed for the economical, international and ecological transport of oil and chemicals, Silver River, constructed by German-based Lindenau was delivered to one of the largest Chinese shipowners - China Changjiang Shipping Group on June 26, 1999. Classed by Germanischer Lloyd as a Chemical/Oil Tanker, the vessel is the third out of a four-part series built within 1.5 years by Lindenau. This newbuilding, which joined its sister vessel Gold River delivered on March 1, 1999, is a member of Lindenau's Tanker Class 2000 featuring internationally patented Lindenau bulbous bows - allowing the vessels to reach speeds of 14.8 knots at a constant engine output of 2,920 kW.
