Friede Goldman Halter, Inc. announced that it has recently finalized six new contracts with a total value of approximately $40 million. -The Venezuelan government for the construction of two 153-foot LCU-type logistics support vessels. Financing for the project has been secured through the Export-Import Bank and all guarantees have been obtained. Shipbuilding leaders convened in Washington, D.C. recently to discuss the means and methods to propel the U.S. shipbuilding market at the dawn of the new millennium. Under the auspices of seeking a candid and creative discussion regarding the country's shipbuilding future, the U.S. Maritime Administration sponsored a seminar on April 5, dubbed, "Marketing Issues and Challenges Facing the U.S. Attended by industry executives from most of the country's premier facilities, the conference was held on Wednesday, April 5, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City, Va. Stressing the pressures of competition form the lucrative Asian shipbuilding powerhouses of Japan, China and Korea, many conference speakers mulled and brainstormed ways that the U.S. shipbuilders could recapture market share.

Litton Marine Systems has launched a new IMO-compliant vessel traffic system (VTS) for locks, bridges, ports and coastal waters. The company's new VTS-Master-W is a new system utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and proprietary software running under Windows-98/NT. It is based on Litton's unique VTS-Master technology, which permits real-time remote display of raw video data from shore-based surveillance radars superimposed on geographical maps of the area. Litton Marine Systems announced that Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has granted type approval for the Vision 2100 ECDIS. The DNV type approval certifies that the Litton ECDIS complies with international specifications including that of IMO A.817 (19) and IEC 61174. "This is the first ECDIS to be type approved by DNV," stated J. Nolasco DaCunha, vice president, sales and service. "We appreciate the support provided by SevenCs (Germany), our technical partner in achieving this milestone. The Litton system is also the first to meet the specific DNV requirements for full electronic backup for the ECDIS installation." "We are proud to be the first to receive DNV type approval," said DaCunha.

Litton Marine Systems (LMS) won a contract to supply navigation radars for four new Hellenic Navy gunboats. The contract was awarded to Litton by Thomson-CSF Signaal, which is the primary combat systems contractor for the four new vessels being built at the Hellenic Shipyard Co., Skaramanga. The first of the new gunboats will be delivered to the Hellenic Navy starting in mid-2002. Litton will supply Decca BridgeMaster E naval radars with a special naval transceiver unit and 250-mm color ARPA display. The radars will be integrated by Signaal into the TACTICOS combat management system. The contract includes equipment, installation, commissioning, spares support and training for Hellenic Navy personnel.

Litton Marine Systems (LMS) was awarded a contract worth up to $1.8 million to supply navigation and control systems for two new Floreal Class frigates being built for the Moroccan Navy in France construction at Chantiers de L'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire. They are scheduled for delivery in 2003-2004. The frigates will be fitted with Litton's new BridgeMaster E military-spec tactical radar systems. Other equipment to be supplied by Litton includes a ring laser gyro attitude and heading reference system, automatic pilot, electric main steering, echosounder, gyrocompass and magnetic compass with repeaters, GPS and other bridge systems.

The Ministry of Defense has awarded a contract to Litton Marine Systems to install an ISIS 2500 alarm monitoring and condition assessment system on the auxiliary supply ship RFA Ft. Rosalie. The new order follows on the successful sea trials of a similar system on the sister ship, RFA Ft. Austin, earlier this year. As with the installation on RFA Ft. Austin, Litton was required to complete the installation in under seven working days, during which the ship will be in a four-hour readiness status. The installation was scheduled for completion in December 2000. The scope of work will include removal of the existing system, installation and commissioning of the new equipment, technical support and onboard crew training.

Litton Marine Systems (LMS) has supplied bridge electronics and communications systems for a new chemical tanker under construction for Stolt Tankers at the Ujanic Shipyard in Croatia. The 36,700 dwt chemical tanker, scheduled for delivery in January 2001, has been fitted with a complete Litton Vision 2100 integrated bridge system (IBS) with Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) meeting DNV Watch 1 certification. Litton is also installing the ship's GMDSS communications suite and Litton's IMO-approved Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). The ship's hull was constructed at a shipyard in France, and was moved to the Ujanic Shipyard for outfitting and delivery to the customer.

Litton Marine Systems recently completed the first installation of a complete Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) with IMO-compliant protective memory capsule. The Litton VoyageMaster VDR system was installed on the new Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Radiance of the Seas at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Thomas A. The VDR is designed to perform a similar function to an aircraft's "black box," recording vital information from the ship's sensors and voice recorders in a hardened data capsule for analysis by safety investigators following an incident at sea. International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations require that all new ships over 3,000 grt, constructed after July 1, 2002, be fitted with an approved VDR.

Litton Marine Systems has received an order to supply an AMIRIS infrared imaging system and other electronics for a new catamaran passenger ferry under construction at Pequot River Shipworks. Under the contract, Litton is providing a C. Plath Navigat X MK 1 gyrocompass, Navipilot HSC autopilot, in addition to the AMIRIS infrared imaging system for the new 147.6-ft. 300-passenger TriCat ferry being built for Catalina Cruises. This is the second Pequot vessel to be fitted with the AMIRIS infrared imaging system. Since its initial introduction in 1997, the AMIRIS product has been upgraded with options such as an integrated CCD camera, providing a variable thermal image overlay, dual axis stabilization and a laser range finder. AMIRIS is available with either a monochrome or color display.

Litton Marine Systems, subsidiary of Litton Industries has been granted orders to provide Integrated Bridge Systems (IBS) for Norwegian owners. The orders include two new 55,000-dwt LPG carriers for Bergensen (Gdynia Shipyard, Poland) and a 37,500-dwt chemical carrier for Jo Tankers at the Kvaerner Kleven Florø yard. Bergensen, which has opted for a complete DNV Watch One bridge system for ocean and coastal operations, will include Litton-supplied X-band and S-band BridgeMaster E radars, Voyage Management System (VMS) and other components. Also DNV Watch One certified, the equipment that will be fitted on Jo Tankers' carriers includes Bridgemaster E radars, VMS with ECDIS, gyrocompass, autopilot and GMDSS communications suite.

Litton Marine Systems (LMS) received type approval for its Decca BridgeMaster E 180 and 250 flat-screen marine radars. The type approval, granted by the U.K. Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, signifies that the flat-screen radars meet the stringent International Electrotechnical Commission specifications for performance and environmental requirements. The approval covers the 15-in. BridgeMaster E 180 and 18- and 20-in. BridgeMaster E 250 models, and includes as an option the company's Vision technology for automatic clutter suppression. The new series of flat-screen radars provide significant savings in space and weight over traditional CRT displays. This is especially important for high-speed craft, in which size and weight are significant constraints.

Litton Marine Systems has been granted a contract worth more than $7 million by Naval Sea Systems Command, Arlington, Va. to provide radars for U.S. submarines. The contract calls for Litton to supply three AN/BPS-16(V) radar and mast systems, providing navigation and surface surveillance. The trio of systems will be outfitted on USS Jimmy Carter, third Seawolf Class submarine; and New Attack submarines USS Virginia and USS Texas.
