The International Windship Association (IWSA) will host its annual Wind Propulsion Innovation Forum at SMM2016 in Hamburg, including an extensive agenda with expert speakers and panelists that aim to provoke discussion and debate about wind propulsion as key to the future of sustainable shipping. The IWSA Innovation Forum spans all four days of the conference, September 6-9. A broad spectrum of wind propulsion technology providers and ship development projects will be showcasing the latest developments in Rotor technology, Suction Wing, Dynarig and various Hard Sail technologies.

The International Windship Association (IWSA) has announced the shortlist, selected by shipping industry experts, for the inaugural Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards 2016 and voting is now open to everyone to select the winners in three categories – Innovation, Technology User and Research. The Lifetime Achievement Award is a closed vote for IWSA members. The Awards will be presented at a ceremony at the SMM2016 on 8th September 2016 in Hamburg. The Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards were launched by IWSA to recognise pioneering projects and technological innovation in the development of wind propulsion for technically and commercially viable solutions for different vessels across the maritime industry.

On Monday 20th of April 2015, Michael Grey of Lloyds List published the article "Name-calling bullies" where he outlined his opposition to the idea of banning beaching and gave reasons why such a decision would be impractical and unethical for the ship recycling industry. Last last year Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) appointed Nils Kristian Berge acting Chief Executive  to succeed Chris Potter. Seven members of the American Salvage Association (ASA) have been invited to submit competitive bids to remove the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the Italian island of Giglio in late January. One member already involved with response. According to Lloyds List, "The company (vessel owner), owned by Miami-based Carnival, said in a statement that it would select a salvage firm based on tenders" by the end of March. One ASA member has already been contracted and is onsite in Italy to remove fuel oil and marine gasoline from the vessel.

SpecTec announced a pilot scheme for an innovative take on traditional Classification Survey Reports in association with Lloyd's Register, Carnival UK and James Fisher Mimic. SpecTec worked alongside industry members Lloyd's Register, Carnival UK and James Fisher Mimic to produce a breaking report to substantially increase the efficiency of class surveys by presenting machinery information required in a simple, quick and cost effective manner. Essentially, this report is extracting data from systems that are already in place, and delivering the data to the right person and in a format which will support the vital function of the surveyor. By joining the two systems all relevant maintenance history and condition monitoring information can be gathered into one report.

Martin Briddon MBE from James Fisher Mimic, provider of engineering and condition monitoring services and part of the James Fisher Group, will launch the Mimic Shipping Classification Report at the Lloyds List Condition Monitoring in Shipping conference. Generated from within the Mimic Condition Monitoring software, the report will combine condition monitoring and vibration data together with information from AMOS Maintenance & Purchase and present it in electronic or hardcopy versions to a visiting Class Surveyor. Created in conjunction with Lloyds Register, this report will allow ship operators to present machinery information required for class survey.
