VT Halter Nabs Deal to Build LNG Bunkering ATB

As  the move toward LNG as marine fuel moves foward in earnest, Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) announced that its US shipyard, VT Halter Marine won the contract by Quality Liquefied Natural Gas Transport, LLC (Q-LNG) to build America’s first offshore Liquefied Natural Gas Articulated Tug and Barge (LNG ATB) unit. Q-LNG contracted VT Halter Marine for engineering services to complete the detailed design for the development and construction of one LNG Bunkering ATB unit. The ATB Tug will have 5,100 hp GE 6L250 MDC EPA Tier 4 main engines, with Z-drives, and dimensions of 128 x 42 x 21-ft.. The barge is designed to carry 4,000 cu. m. of LNG, and will have dimensions of 324 x 64 x 32.5 ft.

GTT to Design LNG Tanks for New FSRU/LNG Carriers

GTT has won a contract to design the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks for two dual purpose vessels capable of operating as efficient LNG carriers and floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) that are presently on order at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Corp. These vessels will be built at Shanghai, China, for the owner Dynagas, with scheduled delivery in 2021. GTT said it will design the LNG tanks of both units, each representing a capacity of 174,000 m3.The membrane cryogenic containment system NO96 GW, with glass wool insulation, will be used for the LNG storage on board. According to GTT, there are currently 14 vessels in operation and 42 on order that use this technology.

Bouchard Set to Celebrate a Century

In 2018 one of the U.S. premier vessel owners – Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc. (BTC) – celebrates its 100th year in business. Maritime Reporter looks at BTC’s evolution through the years. The year 2018 is a celebration year for the Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc., which was founded in 1918 in New York Harbor by Capt. Frederick Bouchard, and will next year celebrate a century in business. The company’s first cargo was a shipment of coal, and its first oil barge was acquired in 1931.

Shell Trading, Harvey Gulf ink LNG Transport Contract

Harvey Gulf International Marine’s CEO Shane Guidry announced today the formation of new marine transportation company, Quality Liquefied Natural Gas Transport, LLC (“Q-LNG”), owned 70% by Shane Guidry and 30% by Harvey Gulf. Q-LNG will own and operate assets providing marine transportation of liquefied natural gas (“LNG”), a critical component of U.S. LNG infrastructure, commencing with a long-term contract with Shell Trading (U.S.) Company (“Shell”) to deliver LNG as a fuel source to various ports in Florida and the Caribbean. Trafigura to Develop Another Pakistan LNG Import Project

Swiss commodity trader Trafigura said it plans to develop its second liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Pakistan, alongside an existing project in which it has a minority stake. At a inauguration ceremony for Pakistan's second LNG import project, Pakistan GasPort Ltd (PGPL), in Port Qasim in Karachi, the trader said it would add a jetty, berth and a second floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to the existing facility. Trafigura expects to benefit from lower development costs by taking advantage of existing infrastructure at the site.

Arctic LNG Carriers Delivered: RS Class

The construction of a series of Arctic LNG carriers under the technical supervision of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is in progress: in November “Boris Vilkitsky” and “Fedor Litke” gas carriers were delivered to the customer and the keel of a new gas carrier was laid. A series of 15 LNG carriers unique in design, is being constructed as part of the implementation of the large-scale RF liquefied natural gas production project Yamal LNG. The construction site is Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard in the Republic of Korea.

BW Group, Mitsui Form FSRU Joint Venture

A joint venture agreement between Japan’s Mitsui & Co. and Singapore’s BW Group Limited will see Mitsui purchase a 49 percent share in the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) BW Integrity, while BW will maintain a 51 percent share. The deal is expected to close as soon following payment for the acquisition. BW Integrity is currently in Port Qasim on a 15-year charter to PGP Consortium Limited (PGPC), to provide LNG regasification services at Pakistan’s second LNG import terminal. BW will continue to provide commercial and technical management services.

Pakistan LNG Import Project Consortium Folds -Hoegh LNG

A consortium behind a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import project in Pakistan, including oil giant Exxon Mobil, France's Total and Qatar Petroleum, has been dissolved, shipping company Hoegh LNG said on Thursday. Hoegh LNG was due to supply the project's ship-based import terminal, a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), where LNG brought in by tanker is converted back to gas to feed into Pakistan's grid. The other six members of the consortium were Japan's Mitsubishi and Turkish developer Global Energy Infrastructure (GEI). "The consortium has spent considerable time and resources on finding [the project's] final form and structure.

Summit Signs Floating LNG Facility Contract

LNG Market Outlook by Flex LNG

The LNG shipping market tightened throughout the third quarter, and rates increased sharply in October following gradual increases since May. This was due in part to strong LNG demand from China which helped to widen the arbitrage between spot LNG import prices in Europe, U.S. and Asia. This led to increased cargoes from the Atlantic basin and an associated increase of average sailing distances. The current market dynamic is supportive for a further increase in rates during a seasonally strong period of the year.

Finland's Manga LNG Terminal Gets First Cargo

The first shipload of liquefied natural gas (LNG) arrival to the LNG import terminal in Tornio, Finland, on Sunday November 19, 2017. The Manga LNG natural gas import terminal in Röyttä Harbor, Tornio, is a joint venture of the industrial companies Outokumpu and SSAB Europe, the energy company EPV Energy and the LNG company Skangas. LNG was shipped to the terminal by Coral Energy, a time-chartered LNG carrier operated by Skangas. Once completed in summer 2018, the import terminal will be the largest LNG terminal in the Nordic countries and the second LNG terminal in Finland.

France to Boost LNG Usage in Shipping

France will modify regulations on the natural gas to allow liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering to take place at ports, Reuters reported quoting Prime Minister Edouard Philippe. He said the country will consider changing fiscal rules on amortising investments in new ships or engine technology. “We have to use this (energy) transition to differentiate ourselves on the market - in transport and in port services,” he said. The report said that LNG has been promoted as an alternative to fuel oil for a shipping sector facing tougher emissions standards from 2020…

Gazprom, Shell Discuss LNG Projects

A working meeting between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Maarten Wetselaar, Member of the Executive Committee of Royal Dutch Shell, took place in St. Petersburg. The meeting addressed relevant aspects of strategic cooperation. Particular attention was paid to joint efforts in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector. The parties discussed the construction project for the third train of the LNG plant on Sakhalin Island and the progress of the Joint Study Framework Agreement for the Baltic LNG project. The meeting also focused on the Nord Stream 2 project.

ABS Grants AIP for Jensen’s LNG ATB Design

A Jensen Maritime-designed, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-bunkering articulated tug-barge (ATB) has been granted approval in principle (AIP) by classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The designation establishes that Jensen’s vessel concept, which is classed as an A1 Liquefied Gas Tank Barge, is compliant in principle with ABS rules and guides. Suited for mobile bunkering, Jensen’s ATB is also oceans rated, meaning that it is not limited to the intracoastal waterways.

The Versatile ATB Enters the LNG Game

EBDG’s LNG bunkering barge design receives ABS approvals as the maritime industry increasingly looks to LNG as a fuel of the future. In early June, Federal Maritime Commissioner William P. Doyle told listeners at an LNG Bunkering conference in Vancouver, Canada that “Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering in North America is moving forward … There is an abundant supply of natural gas in North America. Utilizing natural gas as a marine fuel would help ship owners and operators comply with the MARPOL Annex VI requirements to reduce air pollution from ocean going vessels.” That much is true.

Harley's New ATB Completes Sea Trials

Harley Marine Services’ new tug OneCURE and the 80,000BBL, double hull, oceangoing barge Edward Itta have completed sea trials as combined articulated barge unit (ATB) on October 26, and the vessels have been accepted for delivery. The vessel trials, performed by Conrad Shipyard 10 miles south of Port Fourchon, included crash stops at various speeds, basic and high-speed maneuvering, systems monitoring and tests of main engine steering. Harley Marine Offshore Port Engineer, Randy Boyne, who was onboard, reported that the vessels responded as expected.

U.S. Shipping Partners Accepts Delivery of ATB

U.S. Shipping Partners announced the completion of its second Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) unit on schedule with the delivery of the barge Petrochem Producer from Bay Shipbuilding at . The , the tug for the second unit, was delivered in July from Eastern Shipbuilding, . The Galveston/ Petrochem Producer is currently enroute to the Gulf Coast and will enter service in early September on long term charter to a major oil company. The third ATB in the series is scheduled to be delivered in November of this year and the fourth ATB in August of 2009.

VT Halter Launches Barge for Bouchard Transportation

Bouchard Transportation Co., announced the launch of Barge B. No. 270, the first of two Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) units constructed by VT Halter Marine, Inc., a company of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. The barge was launched at the Pascagoula Shipyard Operations in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on Friday, May 1, 2015, following the launch of tug Kim M. Bouchard, part of the ATB unit, at the Moss Point Marine facility in Escatawpa, Mississippi, on February 26, 2015. When paired, Kim M. Bouchard and Barge B. No. 270 will be delivered to Bouchard as part of its ongoing fleet expansion program.

Articulated LNG Barge Proposal Gets Class AIP

ABS gives Approval in Principle (AIP) to a newly proposed LNG articulated tug & barge re-gasification vessel that facilitates the use of cleaner burning fuel. The concept vessel, introduced by Waller Marine Inc., has the ability to load LNG from existing LNG terminals, liquefaction facilities or traditional LNG carriers and transport the LNG to existing tanks, traditional LNG carriers, trucks or marine vessels using LNG as a fuel. The barge also is equipped for regasification of LNG directly to a pipeline or to a power plant. An additional feature will be the use of natural gas as a fuel in the dual fuel engines of the tug to drive the tug-barge unit.

Teekay LNG Partners Launches New Multigas Pool

Teekay LNG Partners L.P. launched a new in-house commercial management for ethylene-capable liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. The Teekay Multigas Pool is expected to reach at least 12 vessels by the end of 2017, including third-party vessels, as well as the partnership’s seven directly-owned ethylene-capable LPG carriers, some of which are also capable of small-scale LNG shipping, from I.M Skaugen’s Norgas Carriers Pool. “This is the right time for Teekay LNG to bring commercial management of our seven ethylene-capable LPG carrier fleet in-house,” said Mark Kremin, President and CEO of Teekay Gas Group Ltd.

VT Halter Lays Keel for Barge

VT Halter Marine laid the keel for Barge B No. 270, which is, in part, one of two Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) units being built for Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc. (Bouchard). The barge measures 625 x 91 x 47 ft. and has a 250,000-barrel capacity and will be used to transport liquid petroleum. The barge is ABS and USCG certified for Jones Act service. Construction of the two units began April 2013 at VT Halter Marine’s Pascagoula facility, with delivery scheduled for mid 2015. VT Halter Marine has also scheduled a February 6, 2014 launch for the ocean going 112-ft. 4000 hp ATB Tug “Denise A. Bouchard”, sister tug to the previously built “Evening Star”. Measuring 112 x 35 x 17 ft., the tug is classed by ABS as A1 Towing Vessel, Dual Mode, and is equipped with an Intercon Coupler System.

Skangas, Titan LNG Sign MoU

Skangas of Norway and Titan LNG based in The Netherlands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The two companies will cooperate on serving marine Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) customers. For ship operators this agreement will contribute to the overall availability as well as the optimization of LNG deliveries in the wider region. ATB New Construction and Retrofits Highlight Order Books for Southern Shipyards

Late last year was a high water mark of sorts in the Articulated Tug-Barge (ATB) business. In December, Crowley Maritime of Seattle, Wash. took delivery of their fourth ATB, featuring a 9,280 HP tug and a 155,000 barrel barge. Bay Shipbuilding, Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. built the barge. and the tug by sister company Marinette Marine, Manitowoc, Mich. At about the same time on the east coast K-Sea Transportation was taking delivery of their fourth ATB unit from Bollinger Shipyards, Lockport, La. All four of these new units featured new 80,000-100,000 barrel barges and existing tugs fitted with the JAK coupler system. In 2004, ATB construction has slowed a bit, but several companies continue contracting for retrofitted and new ATB units.
