London Gateway Terminal: First Scheduled Arrival

Britainā€™s new global shipping port welcomes its first scheduled vessel, the ā€˜MOL Caledonā€™ from South Africa. After more than a decade of planning and construction across three square miles of development, DP World London Gateway deep-sea port is now open & operational. The ā€˜MOL Caledonā€™ was welcomed by DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Vice Chairman Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group CEO Mohammed Sharaf, Chairman of MOL Liner Junichiro Ikeda, and shipper representatives JFH Hillebrand MD David Mawer and Chingford Fruit MD Gavin McNally, together with other senior executives.

Thamesportā€™s Woes Signal U.K. Ports Shake Up

Following Evergreenā€™s recent consolidation of its U.K. cargo handling needs at Felixstowe, the news that Hapag-Lloyd, OOCL and NYK intend to switch their transatlantic services to Southampton will leave Thamesport with no deep sea services. Whilst a return of some deep sea traffic might occur, Thamesport appears to be the first casualty of the impending shake up in U.K. deep sea container ports brought about by the combination of bigger ships, larger alliances ā€“ and the new London Gateway terminal. ITF Port Unions Resolve to Campaign Against DP World

ITF (International Transport Workersā€™ Federation) dockersā€™ union representatives meeting in Chicago, USA, resolve to organise a global campaign highlighting the need for global network terminal operator (GNT) DP World to engage with unions over trade union rights/representation in a number of countries. The representatives agreed that action is required, particularly with regards the situation at London Gateway terminal, UK, where Unite the Unionā€™s offer of cooperative working is being snubbed.

The first ship ever to berth at London's new deepwater container terminal, 'MV Wieniawski' also delivered four auto stacking cranes from China. Due to formally open in Q4 2013, London Gateway will be the UKā€™s first 21st Century major deep-sea container port and Europeā€™s largest logistics park. Owned and operated by DP World and situated on the north bank of the River Thames, London Gateway will provide unrivalled deep-sea shipping access to the largest consumer markets in the UK.
