About 500 people gathered at the Long Beach Convention Center for the event, which brings together a panel of shipping and trade experts to offer their perspectives on industry trends and how they affect the San Pedro Bay port complex. One of the panelists, Drewry Maritime Research Senior Quantitative Economist Mario Moreno, predicted Asia-U.S. trade will grow 6.8 percent in 2018, the fastest pace in more than half-a-dozen years. He also estimated the overall U.S. economy will expand 2.8 percent. While President Donald Trump and China have proposed higher tariffs, an all-out trade war between China and the United States appears unlikely, according to Moreno. “Both nations have a lot to lose,” Moreno said.

In a history-making run, the largest container ship  CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin will arrive in Seattle Monday, Feb. 29 after visits in Long Beach and Oakland, California. It will visit Long Beach Thursday bringing goods from China. Although the event is not public, people should be able to see the ship from the waterfront area east of the Long Beach Convention Center, and from sections of Alamitos Beach, said Art Wong, a Port of Long Beach spokesman. The 1,310-foot-long container vessel of CMA CGM called at the Port of Oakland after leaving Los Angeles in December, then sailed to China on Jan. 4. It reached Xiamen, China Jan. 30, later calling at the ports of Nansha, Hong Kong and Yantian before leaving for Long Beach Feb. 4. It will stay in Long Beach until Feb. 24.

A heavy equipment operator, port construction manager, shoe company executive and maritime university student encouraged Long Beach young women to explore careers in shipping industry at this week’s fifth annual Celebrating Women in Trade luncheon. More than 300 people attended the Nov. 17 event, including 160 local female high school students. U.S. Maritime Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen and Long Beach Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal today hosted the third of 11 nationwide regional forums on the Beyond Traffic draft framework at Long Beach Convention Center. The Beyond Traffic report examines the trends and choices facing America’s transportation infrastructure over the next three decades, including a rapidly growing population, increasing freight volume, demographic shifts in rural and urban areas and a transportation system facing more frequent extreme weather events.

Moose Boats announced its latest boat design, the S3000, an outboard catamaran, during the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show, March 6 - 10, at the Long Beach Convention Center. With twin Yamaha 225 HP, four-stroke, fuel injected outboards and the catamaran design; the S3000 has a top end speed of 40 knots and a cruise speed of 32 knots. The overall length is 32.5 ft. and weighs approximately 8,800 lbs. dry and holds 300 gallons of fuel, which provides a comfortable 450 mile range. Moose Boats only builds aluminum catamarans.
