Worker Killed in Forklift Accident at Port of Los Angeles

A worker died on Monday after becoming trapped under a forklift at the Port of Los Angeles, according to local officials.The Los Angeles Fire Department said it received report of the incident around 10:40 a.m. at Berth 270.Emergency responders pronounced the trapped person dead on scene. The cause of incident is unknown at this time.The deceased individual has been identified as a man in his 30s, according to local media reports.Authorities from multiple agencies are investigating.

Pacific Storm Triggers Tornado, Mudslides, Floods in Southern California

A Pacific storm pounded Southern California with heavy rain and high winds on Friday, triggering a small tornado, flash floods and mudslides that prompted the evacuation of hundreds of homes, damaged dozens of others and disrupted passenger rail services along the coast. One person was found dead on Friday in a rain-swollen flood-control channel in the Orange County town of Garden Grove, which could mark the third storm-related fatality on the West Coast since Thursday. Separately, rescue teams saved two people after they were swept away in the fast-moving Los Angeles River near a homeless encampment, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in Twitter messages.

Wilmington Wharf Fire: Port of LA Update

With the wharf fire in Wilmington now more than 90 percent contained, terminals at the Port of Los Angeles plan to resume full operations Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. informs the Port. Only the Pasha terminal at Berth 177, the location of the fire, will remain closed. Fire at Los Angeles Port Stops Container Traffic

Thick smoke from a smoldering fire started by a welder's torch at the Port of Los Angeles was preventing the movement of containers at the facility on Tuesday, because air conditions were too harmful for dock workers, officials said. The fire broke out on Monday evening and burned about 150 feet (45 meters) of a wharf area at the Port of Los Angeles, which is the busiest seaport in the nation, and within less than two hours it was mostly extinguished, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. But the fire smoldered on because of factors such as the presence in the pier of creosote, a flammable, oily substance used as a wood preserving agent, Humphrey said.

Pipeline Breaks, Spills Crude Oil Into LA Neighborhood

A faulty Valve Pump station at a Petroleum Pipeline Ruptured Early on Thursday in an Industrial corner of Los Angeles, spewing Crude Oil 40 Feet (12 meters) into the Air, onto the Roof of a strip club next door, and leaving four people sick from the fumes. An Estimated 10,000 gallons of Oil gushed from the Pipeline before it was shut down and the spill was halted, soaking an Area about a half-Block Long, Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Jaime Moore Said. The Company that runs the Pipeline, Plains All American Pipeline LP, a Unit of Plains Pipeline LP, put the Volume of the spill at "less than 450 barrels (18,900 gallons)" based on Current field Inspections.

JMC to Design Fireboats for L.A. Fire Dept.

Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle, Washington, has been awarded the contract to design a small fireboat for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Three of these new boats are to replace three existing fiberglass boats that were built in the 60's, and are to be used to enhance the Department's capability for fighting ship and shore-side fires. Each vessel is to be not more than 40-ft. in length, obtain cruising speeds in excess of 25 knots, and have a pumping capacity approaching 2,000 GPM. The boats are to be powered by twin diesel engines, with a third engine powering the fire pump. A three man crew will operate each vessel during typical missions. For larger conflagrations, these boats will operate in tandem with the Department's larger vessels.

Fireboat Delivered to Port of Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Fire Department has accepted its new fireboat which is en route from Freeland, Wash. to its homeport. The fireboat left March 21, and is expected to take 5 to 6 days. This voyage is the culmination of an eight year long process to create a new generation of marine fire-fighting capability in Los Angeles. Built over an eighteen month period (started on September 11, 2001) by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders of Freeland, the new fireboat was designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, BC.

(32 m) and a fire-fighting capacity of more than 10,300 cu. m. /hr. Built to replace the 75-year-old Ralph J. Scott, it was designed by Robert Allan Ltd. And constructed in 18 months by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. The basic principle of this ship was developed by Voith Schiffstechnik, Germany and it is based on the Voith Water Tractor. During fire fighting the pumps are running with 70 percent of the main engine power and the remaining 30% are sufficient for the vessel to maintain an exact position. The vessel has a unique hull form developed by Robert Allan Ltd.

NYFD Awards Fireboat Contract

Robert Allan Ltd. won a contract by the Fire Department of New York for the, design and construction administration of a major new fireboat. The new vessel will replace the venerable, but aging, Fire Fighter. Allan Ltd. on the basis of qualifications and experience with major high-performance fireboats. The new vessel will be approximately 130 ft . total pumping capacity of 8,200 cu. m. per hour (36,000 gpm). The vessel is expected to be put to tender at shipyards late in the second quarter of 2006.
