Davie Wins Canadian Icebreaker Refit Work
Canadian shipyard Davie said it has secured a contract for the upgrade and refit of Canada’s heaviest icebreaker, 50-year-old CCGS Louis St Laurent. The $14 million program, part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s multi-year maintenance plan, will mark the return of the CCGS Louis St Laurent to Davie in February 2017. According to a representative of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, CCGS Louis St Laurent and its hull are in good condition, and the refit work set to take place from February 16 to June 23 has been commissioned to extend the life of the vessel and maintain its reliability.
America Needs Icebreakers
Russia has more polar icebreakers than the rest of the world combined. America has one polar icebreaker and that one is well past its prime. There has been talk of sharing icebreakers. Sharing may work with allies, who are generally on the same page. Sharing will not work with Russia, which views the world as a zero-sum game. In June 2016, Russia announced the launching of Arktika, the world’s largest polar icebreaker. With a full load displacement of 33,540 tons, a length of 173.3 meters and a breadth of 34 meters, it will be capable of breaking ice up to 2.9 meters.
STX to Design Canadian Icebreaker
STX Canada Marine Awarded Contract to Design the Canadian Coast Guard’s New Polar Icebreaker. STX Canada Marine is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the contract to design the new polar icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced today the award on behalf of the Government of Canada. The work will be carried out at STX Canada Marine’s Vancouver office and be completed by the end of 2013. The polar icebreaker will be named after former Prime Minister John George Diefenbaker (CCGS John G. Diefenbaker).
Allied Systems Cranes for CG Icebreakers
On March 27, the U.S. Coast Guard awarded Allied Systems Company a $10m dollar contract to provide deck cranes and auxiliary hydraulic power units for the USCG icebreakers Polar Star (WAGB-10) and Polar Sea (WAGB-11). This contract award represents part of a retrofit and reactivation of these older Coast Guard icebreakers to meet the needs of Homeland Security and the scientific community. Canadian Coast Guard Vessel to Undergo Refit
The Canadian Coast Guard heavy icebreaker, Louis St. Laurent, will spend the next several weeks at the Halifax Shipyard undergoing refit before launching its summer program. Coast guard spokesman David Jennings said the icebreaker is in drydock for a routine inspection, which is required by the Transport Canada’s Marine Safety branch. The $2-million project will include steel work on its interior and bulkheads, work on its steering gear and removal and mandatory inspection of the rudder. The vessel, which underwent a $158-million major upgrade several years ago, will also have new deepwater sounding equipment installed before heading to the Arctic. Source: ChronicleHerald.ca
