Marine Coatings: Moving with the Tide

Andreas Glud, Group Segment Manager, Marine, Dry Dock, Hempel A/S

The maritime industry has always followed a path of gradual improvement, albeit with many opting to travel the route of least resistance. In some ways, this is a good thing. A cautious approach to navigating change brings stability, assurance and predictability. This measured attitude toward managing change has been fundamental to ensuring that the commercial shipping industry remains the most financially viable transportation solution for moving most goods around the world. But…

Singapore Reports Higher May Bunker Fuel Sales

Singapore marine fuel sales climbed to a four-month high of 4.283 million tonnes in May, up 1.2 percent from the previous month and 2.5 percent higher compared with a year ago, data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) showed on Wednesday. The strong volumes sold in May were largely in line with industry expectations and come despite sharply higher bunker fuel prices due to rising crude oil prices and shortages of finished grade bunker fuel oil during the month. The cost of 380-centistoke (cst) fuel oil cargoes, the mainstay bunker fuel for large vessels, in May averaged $433

Singapore marine fuel sales climbed to a three-month high of 4.233 million tonnes in April, up 1.6 percent from the previous month but 0.5 percent lower from the same time last year, data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) showed on Monday. In a signal of steady demand for marine fuels, the firm April sales volumes came despite rising fuel costs and supply disruptions of some bunker fuels towards the end of the month, trade sources said. The cost of 380-centistoke (cst) fuel oil cargoes, the mainstay bunker fuel for large vessels, in April averaged $385 per tonne in Singapor

The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and its members are preparing to meet higher demand for gas scrubbing systems to bring SOx emissions in line with the targets set by the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulfur content proposals. As previously reported by this correspondent in Maritime Reporter and Engineering News (December 2016 issue, page 24; January 2017 issue, page 28), the IMO has come in for some severe criticism over its proposals to introduce a global marine fuels sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent (mass/mass) by the year 2020.

LNG Tech on tap at Europort 2013

The Port of Rotterdam predicts becoming a LNG bunkering hub by 2030

Emissions regulations from 2015 onwards are driving shipowners to a crossroads on fuel selection. Ahead of Europort 2013, Rotterdam, Dutch interests are making significant waves in tangible investments in LNG as a fuel option. While there is not consensus on the potential of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, the concept is gaining traction rapidly as using LNG reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from ships, as well as allowing operators to meet restrictions set in Sulfur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) today, which tighten from 2015 onwards.

Alfa Laval, Spliethoff Deal for Cleaner Ships

PureSOx by Alfa Lava

Alfa Laval signed a contract with Spliethoff, a leading player in the transport market. It covers the retrofit of a multiple inlet PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system on board one of Spliethoff’s vessels which operates mainly in the North European ECA area. It is the first order received by Alfa Laval for such a multiple inlet system. Since the vessel’s engines have a combined rated output of 28 MW, this will be the largest marine scrubbing system ever sold. It can therefore be…

Maersk Leads Fuel Switch at Port of Virginia

Maersk Line will switch to low-sulfur fuel while at berth for all of its containerships calling the Port of Virginia starting in February. This fuel switch program will help improve air quality in the greater Hampton Roads area by significantly reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Maersk Line is the lead shipping line to participate in the fuel switch program sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia through the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ), as well as the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Air Emission Regulation Update

Mikael Troberg of Wärtsilä

In March this year, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposal to designate waters off the North American coasts as an Emission Control Area was adopted by IMO, the International Maritime Organization. The North American ECA is a key part of a comprehensive EPA program to address harmful emissions from large ships. Which are the time schedules of upcoming emission regulations? How are marine engine manufacturers preparing for the tighter air emission limits being adopted? Henrik Segercrantz explores.

Fleet Emission Credit Applications Available

Application forms for fleet emission credits (FEC) as well as a status of the terminal plan submittals are now available on ARB’s Shore Power website. FEC are only applicable toward compliance with the At-Berth Regulation where fleet operators have chosen the Equivalent Emission Reduction Option—fleets that have chosen the Reduced Onboard Power Generation Option cannot apply for or use FEC. These forms are applicable to two types of emission reductions: 1) Use of either low sulfur marine gas oil or low sulfur marine distillate oil in auxiliary engines while the ship is docked at a California port prior to January 1, 2007; and 2) use of grid-based shore power at a California port prior to January 1, 2010.
