Afognak Strait, Alaskan Limit
Afognak is the name of an island, and a mountain in the northern part of the Kodiak Archipelago. It is also the name of a passage between little Whale Island and Afognak Island on the shores of which Kevin O’Leary has 143 wilderness acres and a cabin. So when it came to naming their new boat it is the passage, Afognak Straits, that Kevin O’Leary and his vessel partner, Walter Sargent, chose for their new longliner. Delivered by Fred Wahl Marine of Reedsport Oregon this past summer the Afognak Straits is currently, as of September 20, in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
Naval Funding for BAE Systems
BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $11,717,122 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-05-C-4403) for repairs of the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7). The following work items will be accomplished on the ship: replace sewage discharge pumps; install scullery steam condensate drain piping; replace fire retardant plywood on ammunition magazine bulkhead; remove & dispose marine coatings containing heavy metals; replace & test flight deck padeyes; replace ventilation ducting and preheater; repair combination steam exhaust/relief valve; replace lube oil tank, fill connection deck fitting; and other work items to support those mentioned. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and is expected to be completed by November 2009.
News: Damen Delivers First-of-Class ASD Tug
The recently developed Damen ASD Tug 2411 is a real push-pull ASD Tug, designed primarily for working over the bow. This tug is a powerful 4,200 kW vessel that develops a bollard pull of around 70,000 kg; full ahead to full astern in a ship's length, turning around in 10 seconds. With the introduction of the Damen ASD Tug 2411, Damen Shipyards has put a new type of port tug on the market: very compact, with an enormous bollard pull. The prototype of this boat (yard number 512201) was built at Damen Shipyards Changde in China for stock and as a demonstration model, but before delivery the boat was sold to an Australian shipping company and named Barunga.
Serodino Shipyard Busy with Push Boats
In late August this year, Serodino Shipyard at Chattanooga, Tenn., delivered one of its popular Tiger Class 1,200 hp Dinner Bucket Switchboats to the Jeffrey Sand Company of Little Rock Arkansas. Named Chis M, the new boat was delivered from the Serodino yard on the Tennessee River up through the Ohio River system to the Mississippi on route to Little Rock. The shipyard now has another of the Tiger Class under construction to be available for order. The 51.5 x 22.5 x 7.5 ft. hull, with 5.5 ft. draft, is constructed of 0.375-in. plate throughout, with 0.5-in. plate over the wheelsand on the bilge knuckles. Seven in. channel on 24-in. centers with 3 x 5 x 0.375-in. frames in the bow.
