With more and more ships navigating in polar waters, IMO has moved to address international concern about the protection of the polar environment and the safety of seafarers and passengers with the introduction of new regulations that all ships operating in these harsh and challenging waters must comply with. The mandatory Polar Code, for ships operating in Arctic and Antarctic waters, enters into force on 1 January 2017, marking a historic milestone in the work of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to address this key issue. Its requirements, which were specifically tailored for the polar environments, go above and beyond those of existing IMO conventions such as MARPOL and SOLAS, which are applicable globally and will still apply to shipping in polar waters.

Classification society ClassNK has amended its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships in response to the latest industry developments, including amendments made to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). IMO decided to carry out the first full review of the IGC Code to reflect the latest technological advancements and increasing ship size. Amendments to the Code were adopted as resolution MSC.370 (93) at the 93rd session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 93) held in May 2014.

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) said it is actively strengthening partnership in key areas of enhancing maritime transport safety. In 2014, meetings of four sections of the RS Scientific and Technical Council (STC) were held. Scientific and educational centers, shipbuilding and shiprepair yards, shipping companies and other organizations of the maritime industry participated in the RS Scientific and Technical Council sections: St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SMTU), Krylov State Scientific Center, OAO Rosmorport, OAO Severnaya Verf, OAO Admiralteiskie Verfi, Nevsky Shipyard, Shipbuilding & Shiprepair Technology Center.

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) signed an agreement with Baku Shipyard LLC of Azerbaijan for the design approval of project 38М сrewboat high speed craft (designer - SHIPTECH, Singapore). The new boats are intended for the carriage of specialized personnel employed at offshore oil and gas facilities and will be one of the first orders placed with the newly built shipyard in Baku. Under the terms of the design approval agreement, the RS experts are to review the design documentation of five ships under construction for compliance with the new RS requirements as well as other RS applicable normative documents and also, with statutory requirements coming within the terms of RS reference. The new boats will be constructed as part of the Azerbaijan state program for fleet renovation.

Robert E. Derecktor, Inc., is pleased to announce its selection to build a new 19.2-meter catamaran research and classroom vessel for The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk (CT). The Maritime Aquarium has been providing student and public research voyages in the protected waters of Long Island Sound since 1988. The new Incat Crowther-designed all-aluminum vessel will carry up to 65 students with a crew of 5. The safety of the students is of paramount importance to the vessel's design and construction. The vessel will be fully ADA compliant and meet all current USCG Subchapter T requirements.

Coast Guard inspectors conducted certificate of compliance examinations on two mobile offshore rigs heading for Cook Inlet. Inspectors from Coast Guard Sector Anchorage, Marine Safety Detachment Homer and Marine Safety Unit Texas City successfully examined the vessels to verify compliance with applicable international and Federal regulations. The Endeavour – Spirit of Independence was satisfactorily examined in Homer over Saturday and Sunday at which time the vessel received a Coast Guard Certificate of Compliance.

Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions and services provider, has been awarded the contract to supply the engines and complete propulsion systems for two newbuild vessel projects. The order includes a total of 28 engines for 14 vessels being built for the Kuwait Oil Company, and represents a major order for Wärtsilä from a Middle East based marine sector customer. The Wärtsilä propulsion solutions will be installed in nine 80 ton Bollard Pull (BP) tugboats, and five 50 ton BP tugboats, being built at the Damen shipyard in Holland.

The New York and New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots took delivery of America, the first of their new 53-ft. Pilot Boats built by Derecktor Shipyards in Mamaroneck, NY. The New York and New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots operate in one of the busiest ports of the U.S. and keep their boats stationed near Ambrose Light, tied up to a mother ship. From there the Pilot Boats can quickly respond to calls from incoming ships as they approach. America was designed by Camarc Small Ship Designs, a U.K. firm headed by Naval Architect Alistair Cameron. It is a modern boat with a fast efficient hull design that is designed to provide a top speed of 25 knots with an extremely smooth ride.

Crowley Marine Services delivered Alert, Attentive, and Aware, a series of three 140-ft., 10,000-hp Prevention and Response Tugs (PRTs), to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Valdez, Alaska. Specifically designed and developed for Alyeska, the boats will be used by Crowley in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System trade. Alert was deployed in February; Attentive was delivered in June, and Aware was delivered in July.

The Fire Island Ferries, Inc. took delivery of AMERICA, an 85 ft. Freight Boat built by Derecktor Shipyard Conn. LLC. This is the first boat to have been delivered by Derecktor’s Connecticut facility. AMERICA will be used between the Long Island operator’s home port of Bay Shore, on the South shore of Long Island, and various destinations on Fire Island. The new vessel shall be used primarily to ferry cargo needed by contractors working on Fire Island, and various commercial delivery vehicles and contractors. Designed by Nigel Gee & Associates, the ferry is a fairly traditional looking vessel with a singlechined hull. Hull and superstructure are all-aluminum alloy. The bow of the boat has an enclosed section for cargo storage and passengers.

The State of Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife took delivery of “First State” to replace their current Fisheries Research Vessel, a hundred-year -old converted wooden sailboat. The new 62 ft. The expansion of fast ferry building facilities has taken another gigantic step on the U.S. East Coast. In concert with a beehive of new capacity construction down south, Derecktor Shipyards recently announced that it has completed construction on a 45,000 sq. ft. main assembly building at its facility in Bridgeport, Conn., marking the completion of the second building on this 23-acre site, which is part of the development of the Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex in Bridgeport Harbor. The new main assembly building consists of one 300 x 100 x 75 ft. (clear height) assembly bay and one 300 x 50 x 50 ft. (91.4 x 30.4 x 22.8 m) (clear height) assembly bay. This assembly building is the first of two main assembly halls to be constructed on the site which will provide a total of 168,000 sq.

Derecktor Shipyards is putting the finishing touches on a 134.5 ft. high-speed catamaran for the Woods Hole Steamship Authority at the yard's facility in Mamaroneck, N.Y. Delivery is slated for May of 2000. The other bidders for the contract included Dakota Creek Shipyards, Halter Marine and Pequot River Works. The Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket Steamship Authority, the oldest of its kind in the U.S., provides the only year-round passenger and vehicle ferry service to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Service is provided from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven, and Hyannis to Nantucket. Seasonal service is also provided from Woods Hole to Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard.
