Port Elizabeth Hosts US Customs’ 230th Anniversary

XPO Acquires Port Trucker Bridge Terminal

XPO Logistics has made a deal to acquire Bridge Terminal Transport (BTT) Services, one of the largest motor carriers serving ports and intermodal facilities in the United States, for $100 million. A few days ago, XPO spent $3.5 billion to purchase French third-party logistics provider Norbert Dentressangle. Based in Charlotte, N.C., BTT is a drayage provider, which transports goods over a short distance, offering international and domestic transportation services at major port locations and inland rail sites throughout the U.S. BTT has 28 terminals and some 1,300 independent owner-operators. BTT had revenue of $232 million for the 12 months ended March 31. The XPO statement said the acquisition price represents a multiple of 8.1 times BTT’s tax-free cash flow over the same time.

Maersk Line Ltd. Tap J. Russel Bruner President & CEO

The Board of Directors of Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has named J. Russell Bruner the next President and CEO of Maersk Line, Limited. Mr. Bruner will succeed John F. Reinhart, who will step down on January 31, 2014 to become the CEO and Executive Director of the Port of Virginia. Mr. Bruner joined Maersk in 1989 and has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Maersk, Inc. since 2004. He also has been an Executive Vice President of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group since 2006. Mr. Bruner has held various leadership positions in Maersk’s container businesses, both within the U.S. and internationally. “Russ has the experience, values and vision to lead MLL into the future,” said Admiral Hal Gehman (U.S. Navy, retired), Chairman of Maersk Line, Limited.

Maersk N. American HQ welcomes HRH The Prince Consort of Demark

HRH The Prince Consort of Denmark visited the North American headquarters of Maersk in Madison, NJ, today. The Prince Consort met with Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. J. Russell Bruner, Chief Financial Officer Maersk North America Morten K. Nicolaisen, President of Maersk Line North America Michael J. White, and President of Damco North America, Jeremy T. Haycock to discuss the history and current activities of A.P. Moller Maersk companies in the U.S. The Prince Consort was escorted by the Deputy Consul General and Head of Trade Thomas Rizk. The purpose of the U.S. visit was to increase focus on trade relations between Denmark and the U.S. and recognition of the importance of the internationally operating Danish companies for the continued development of Denmark.

Bruner, Newsome Receive East Coast Connie Awards

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2010 East Coast-based Connie Awards to J. Russell Bruner, Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. and James I. Newsome III, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The evening event on Tuesday, December 7 at The Newark Club will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of CII. The Newark Club event is in addition to the West Coast-based Connie Awards on September 30 in Long Beach, CA, honoring Ron Widdows and Jon Hemingway. CII holds two Connie events each year to accommodate industry leaders on both coasts. Each recipient is being honored for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation, according to Allen Clifford, CII President.

McEllrath & McKenna Honored with Connie Award

James McKenna, President and CEO of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), and Robert McEllrath, President of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), were presented with Connie Awards by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) at the first ever Connie dinner held on the West Coast. “The West Coast industry leaders have long requested that CII bring the prestigious Connie Awards to the region,” said Brendan McCahill, CII Chairman. Dr. Geraldine Knatz, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, and James Spinosa, former ILWU president, introduced Mr. McEllrath.

MarAd Appoints Hicks

The Maritime Administration has named Alan T. Hicks to head its new Southern California Gateway Office in    Ten Gateway Offices have been established in the Nation's largest ports to place a team of intermodal maritime experts "on the ground" that work with headquarters staff, state and local authorities and a broad range of port, shipper and carrier stakeholders to cooperate on projects. The goal is to work on reducing congestion, improving freight and passenger movement, and addressing environmental and community challenges in the ports, intermodal connections, and key freight and passenger corridors. Dredging is expected to start later this year, and construction of the terminal is expected to be completed in 2007. The facility will feature 4000 ft. (1219 meters) of deepwater berth space (four times the current amount), and serve as a Mid-Atlantic platform for future growth. Many high profile international companies have significant operations in the region and others are actively eyeing major distribution centers for the future. The amount of cargo through Hampton Roads is expected to at least double by 2020, in part due to the area’s attraction as a major distribution center.

Three to be Honored at Maritime College

Alfred R. (Ted) Ruhly, retired chairman of Maersk Inc.; Michael J. Sacco, who heads the Seafarers International Union (SIU), and Distinguished Alumnus Commodore Leroy J. Alexanderson will all be honored by the Maritime College at Fort Schuyler Foundation on March 31, 2001 at the New York Hilton. Ruhly began his transportation career in the trucking industry in 1950. After 22 years he joined Maersk Inc. as vice president of Marketing and Sales. In 1974 he was named executive vice president and two years later, president. In 1993, Ruhly was named chairman of the Board of Maersk Inc., a position he held until 1999. He also served as chairman of the Board of Maersk Line Ltd. from 1983 to 1997.

KCI Konecranes Wins 30-Crane Order

Maersk Inc. contracted KCI Konecranes for the delivery of 30 Rail Mounted Gantry Container Handling Cranes (RMG) to APM Terminals' new container terminal in Portsmouth, Va. The contract calls for deliveries to begin in October 2006, and includes the option for an additional 30 cranes. The order value was not disclosed. APM Terminals' new Virginia container terminal project is the largest single private investment in container terminals in the United States. The new terminal is expected to set a new benchmark in the container handling industry, establishing new performance standards and methods of operation. The Konecranes RMG cranes will be used for high density container stacking and truck loading in the container yard.

Maersk Exec says Ports need to Prepare for Flood of Cargo

According to a report in the Virginian Pilot, the North American head of shipping conglomerate A.P. Moller-Maersk Group called for increased investment in U.S. ports and said planning is already under way for the second phase of the new terminal his company is building in Portsmouth, Va. James R. Bruner, president and chief executive officer of Maersk Inc., said North American ports need to vastly increase their capacity to handle a flood of cargo containers expected from Asia in coming years. He spoke Thursday evening at the annual banquet of the Virginia Maritime Association, formerly the Hampton Roads Maritime Association, at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside and Waterside Convention Center. The number of containers moving to and from North America grew 13 percent last year, he said.

Hearing on SAFE Port Act

Maersk Sealand Commits To New Container Terminal

Maersk Inc. has committed to the building of a new state-of-the-art container terminal in the Port Of Los Angeles' Pier 400 facility. The Port of Los Angeles and Maersk Inc. signed a Memorandum of Understanding, agreeing to negotiate to reach a final lease agreement. The lease agreement is subject to regulatory approval of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Line acquisition of Sea-Land International and must also be approved by the boards of A.P. Moller and Maersk Inc., the Los Angeles Harbor Commission and the Los Angeles City Council. In making the Port of Los Angeles its new West Coast hub, Maersk Sealand will bring the port about $2 billion over its 25-year lease.
