Hyundai Drive Made First Call to Hamad Port
Qatar’s Hamad Port announced the addition of a new service from South Korean shipping line Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) to its growing network list, QNA reported. HMM’s 365.5-metre-long ‘Hyundai Drive’ made its first call to Hamad Port, marking the official start of a new Hyundai Merchant Marine’s KME (Korea Middle East Express) service. It is the largest container vessel to make its maiden call in Qatar since the opening of Hamad Port. The vessel from Kwangyang Port in South Korea arrived at Hamad Port in the container terminal CT1.

A Mega(Ship) Year at Felixstowe
The Port of Felixstowe welcomed 105 calls last year by container ships of over 18,000 TEU, including all the largest container ships in the world. It is now firmly established as the UK port of call for these giants of the sea. The year of mega-ships started in January with the maiden call of the CSCL Globe which, at 19,100 TEU capacity, set a new world-record as the largest ship then in service. The record was short-lived however, the 19,224 TEU MSC Oscar pushed the bar even higher when it arrived at Felixstowe in March.
Gulftainer Receives Maiden Call of CMA CGM Virginia
Gulftainer, the largest privately owned independent port operator, has marked the maiden call of the CMA CGM Virginia vessel with a capacity of 5,095 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) at its flagship Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT). The vessel call was completed in a record 5.6 hours, approximately 8.4 hours ahead of schedule. CMA CGM, a leading worldwide shipping group, currently operates a diversified fleet of 445 vessels with a combined capacity of over two million TEU.
Largest French-flag Vessel Called in at Le Havre
The CMA CGM Jules Verne made her maiden call in Le Havre on June 20 at the Terminal de France in Port 2000. She is the world biggest French-flag containership. With a transport capacity of 16,020 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), she joins the other sister-ships ordered by CMA CGM shipping line and named after great sea explorers (real or virtual ones). Owing to its Port 2000 equipment, HAROPA-port of Le Havre is one of the very few ports in the north-European range to be able to receive this new giant of the seas, 396 meters long and 54 meters broad.
New Reefer Ship Makes Maiden Call to US
GT USA welcomed to the Canaveral Cargo Terminal (CCT) the M.V. Seatrade Red on its maiden call to the United States. The 607-foot M.V. Seatrade Red, a specialized reefer container vessel with a capacity of 2,259 TEUs and 674 reefer plugs, was built at China’s Yangfan Shipyard and officially launched in May 2016 as one of Seatrade Group’s four new Colour Class vessels. On Sunday, Jan. 11, the Wallenius Wilhelmsen M/V Tijuca made its maiden call at the Port of Tacoma. Largest Vessel to Call ICTSI, Rijeka
Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) container handling facility in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia, recently serviced the largest vessel to call in the country, the 10,000 TEU-capacity Gerda Maersk. The 367-meter Gerda Maersk, is part of the 2M Alliance by two of the world’s megaliners Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Co. NCL Makes Inaugural Call to Cuba
Norwegian Cruise Line’s first ship to sail to Cuba, Norwegian Sky, has made her maiden call in the capital city of Havana. “Today is a momentous day for Norwegian Cruise Line, our guests and our travel agent partners, as we open our doors to Cuba’s natural beauty, warm people and historical treasures,” said Frank Del Rio, president and chief executive officer for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, who was on board Norwegian Sky with other NCL executives to celebrate the voyage. First RoRo Ship Calls at Khalifa Port
The first scheduled Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) vessel, MV Dream Angel, berthed at the Khalifa Port RoRo terminal on Monday, January 5, heralding the transition of Abu Dhabi Ports’ RoRo cargo, from Zayed Port to Khalifa Port. Operated by Nissan Motor Car Carrier (NMCC), the MV Dream Angel arrived from the Port of Yokohama and Port of Kanda in Japan laden with 164 car units for Abu Dhabi Ports’ key customer Al Masaood Automobiles, one of the region’s main distributors for Nissan and Infiniti. The new vehicles will next be sent to car dealers across the UAE.
QM2 Visit Boosts UAE as Cruise Ship Destination
