Europort Finalizes 2019 Program

Europort 2019 has finalized the most extensive conference and events program in its history, adding a number of elements that will ensure that this year’s edition of the biennial maritime and offshore gathering in Rotterdam is more thought-provoking than ever before.The four-day conference and exhibition, to be staged between November 5-8th at the Rotterdam Ahoy Center, will take place against a backdrop of revival across the specialized shipping markets for which Europort is renowned.

We4Sea Receives New Financing

Delft-based maritime startup We4Sea has secured new funding to accelerate the development and roll out of its platform for monitoring seagoing ships’ fuel consumption and emissions.The investment by ENERGIIQ, Mainport Innovation Fund II and angel investors was announced by Adri Bom-Lemstra, Regional Minister for Economy and Innovation for the Province of Zuid-Holland at the Maritime Delta dinner in Schiedam.Delft startup We4Sea analyses and reports fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions from seagoing ships based on a unique Digital Twin concept. The collected data is analysed and then used to minimise fuel consumption.Ship speed, draft and water depth form part of the analyses as well as wind, waves and currents. The ships are monitored remotely using simulation models.

Rotterdam Port Contributes USD 51.86 billion to Netherlands

USD 51.86 billion (EUR 45.6 billion) or 6.2% of the added value of the Netherlands is due to the Port of Rotterdam. This emerged in ‘The Rotterdam effect - Impact of Mainport Rotterdam on the Dutch economy’ study conducted by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), commissioned by the Port Authority.Port of Rotterdam pointed out that it contributes twice as much to the gross domestic product than previously calculated. Traditionally, when determining the economic significance of the port, only direct employment and added value were measured, including the so-called backwards indirect effects. These backwards effects are the added value that is a consequence of port companies purchasing elsewhere in the Dutch economy.However…

Rotterdam Begins Deepening of New Waterway

Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management and Ronald Paul (COO Port of Rotterdam Authority) gave the official go-ahead for the deepening of the Nieuwe Waterweg and the Botlek. Rijkswaterstaat and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have joined forces to ensure that sea-going vessels with a draught of 15 metres can also reach the Botlek port. The initiation of the project took place in FutureLand, the information centre about the port of Rotterdam on the Maasvlakte. There, an exhibition will also be inaugurated today on this sizeable project, which represents an important improvement for the accessibility of the Botlek and the competitive position of the port of Rotterdam.

Damen Presents Decommissioning Vessels Concept

Damen Shipyards Group has announced its latest concept design: the Damen Decommissioning Series. The vessel will specialize in three core areas of the oil and gas decommissioning sector: topside decommissioning offshore platform removal, and subsea cleaning and removal. The design is based on in-house research carried out at Damen by one of its undergraduate interns. By inviting a considerable number of internships at its yards, Damen Shipyards Group contributes significantly to the maritime education system. One recent position was offered to Justin Rietveld, studying Maritime Technology at the Rotterdam Mainport University of Applied Sciences. His brief was to investigate the potential niche markets for new vessel designs in the oil and gas decommissioning sector.

Aid Ship Docks in Yemen after Diversion to Saudi Arabia

A World Food Programme (WFP) ship carrying humanitarian aid offloaded its cargo in Yemen on Wednesday, the United Nations said, after it was diverted to Saudi Arabia last month because it was carrying communications equipment. Saudi Arabia is leading an Arab military coalition in a war against Iran-allied Houthi rebels and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in an effort to restore President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power. Mainport: People and Business from Ireland to Malaysia

Recently, Mainport, a firm based in Cork Ireland with a range of subsidiaries in diverse marine fields and diverse locations from South Africa to the Caspian and at home in Ireland, extended business to Malaysia where the company is having two new seismic support vessels built at the Shin Yang Shipyard in Miri, Sarawak. The firm sponsored teams to a futsal tournament composed of the shipyard crews building the Mainport Cedar and Mainport Pine. In this manner the firm brought the workers into the global community that is represented by the innovative firm.

Seismic Triplets for Mainport

East Malaysia’s Shin Yang Shipyard has begun construction of three new support vessels for Mainport. Located in Miri, Sarawak the Shin Yang Shipyard has developed an impressive record in the fabrication of sophisticated off shore vessels such as the anchor-handling tug Danem 19. Two of the new support vessels, the Mainport Cedar and Mainport Pine, will be 54.6 by 13.8-meter supply, seismic support vessels. The third, the Mainport Kells, will be somewhat smaller at 37 by 8.7-meter, and will also carry the designation supply, seismic support vessel.

INTERTANKO's Council Meets in London

Discussion at INTERTANKO's Council and Executive Committee meetings in London last week emphasized the depth work by the association and its members since the last Council meeting in April. This has reached from lobbying to both industry and politicians, to discussions and negotiations at IMO; from work in the EU and US to Asia; from environmental issues to industry relationships and chemical issues; and also an increasing range of member services. INTERTANKO has actively engaged in matters arising from the Prestige accident - specifically the accelerated phase-out of single-hull tankers, restriction on the carriage of heavy oils to double-hull tankers, expansion of the Condition Assessment Scheme (CAS).

Agreement on funding Rotterdam port expansion

The State, the municipality of Rotterdam and Port of Rotterdam have today concluded an agreement on financing for the construction of Maasvlakte 2, the plan to expand the port of Rotterdam. The construction of Maasvlakte 2 will cost EUR 2.575 billion. According to the agreement, the State will take a 33.3 percent interest in Port of Rotterdam as of 1-1-2006. Port of Rotterdam CEO Willem Scholten: "This a an extremely important agreement. The expansion will give businesses the opportunity to grow in Rotterdam. Maasvlakte 2 will be an excellent location. Right on the sea, and with good hinterland connections. Construction can start in 2006 and the first sites will be available for clients in 2010.

Havila Sells Eight Recovery Vessels

Havila Shipping ASA has signed a Heads of Agreement with Ocean Mainport Ltd group regarding sale of the UK based rescue recovery operations (RRV). Eight vessels are included in the transaction which will be completed by selling 100% of the shares in Havila Rescue UK Ltd and expected to be closed before yearend. The total transaction value is estimated to be approximately NOK 348 mill, and gives Havila Shipping ASA a total booked profit before tax of approx. NOK 65 mill. The cash effect will be approx. NOK 95 mill. Havila Shipping ASA will grant a secured seller credit of NOK 15 mill. The vessels included in the sale; Havila Sky, Havila Tern, Havila Searcher, Havila Sea, Havila Clever, Havila Sun, Havila Star and Havila Tigris. Handover will take place ultimo November.

More Independence Planned For Rotterdam Port Management

The Rotterdam city council recently accepted proposals that will make it possible for the Rotterdam Municipal Port Management to operate on a more independent basis. "NV Mainport Holding Rotterdam" (NV MHR) will be formed, incorporating both existing and new participations as well as joint ventures. The Port Management's responsibility and authority in the field of land issue, tariffs and investment policy will be increased. The net contribution to the municipal authority will be fixed at 66 million guilders per annum for the period 2000-2003. The Port Management will in future be assessed more on the basis of "Port Performance Indicators." The Rotterdam city council will principally concentrate on main policy lines on the basis of a strategic agenda for the main port.
