Bas Coppes has joined the senior management team at Global Diving & Salvage, Inc., aiming to guide the global growth of the marine services company. Coppes will be based out of Global’s Houston office and will focus on salvage and wreck removal operations worldwide. Coppes brings two decades of salvage and offshore experience to the organization, having managed an extensive number of salvage, wreck removal, and offshore projects across the globe. “In my role as president of Mammoet Salvage Americas, I worked with Global extensively over the last 10 years,” Coppes said.

Mammoet Salvage and its partner, CPT Remolcadores SA of Chile, recently responded to a State of Emergency issued by the government of Ecuador after cargo ship Galapaface 1 – loaded with 19,000 gallons of fuel, petroleum products, chemicals and tons of various cargo – ran aground while departing the island of San Cristobal. Recognizing the imminent disaster and threat of pollution to the UNESCO world heritage site, the Government of Ecuador contracted Mammoet Salvage and CPT to begin immediate operations to remove the ship.

Dutch companies have started a weeks-long operation to raise the Baltic Ace car carrier, which collided with a cargo ship in 2012, killing 11 crew and sending 1,400 cars to the bottom of the North Sea, the government said on Tuesday. Boskalis and Mammoet Salvage were contracted to remove 540,000 litres of fuel, extract the automobiles and raise the wreck from a depth of 11 metres for roughly 67 million euros ($91 million). The Baltic Ace went down in stormy weather 65 kilometres (off the Dutch coast. It collided with the Corvus J container ship on Dec. 5, 2012, in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the North Sea. The Dutch, a dominant maritime power during the Golden Age, have developed expertise in salvaging wrecks.

James Fisher Marine Services Ltd (JFMS), part of James Fisher and Sons plc  has announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with Mammoet Salvage B.V  a division of Mammoet. Operating for over 200 years and with a global office network, Mammoet is a specialist in engineered heavy lifting and multimodal transport solutions. In 2006, following their involvement in the recovery of the sunken Russian nuclear submarine Kursk, they formed Mammoet Salvage B.V., and in recent years that division has experienced substantial growth.

The Dutch Department of Public Works intends to award the contract for the salvage of the wreck of the car carrier Baltic Ace to Boskalis and its partner Mammoet Salvage, Boskalis announced in a press release late last week. The wreck and its cargo need to be removed because they pose a threat to the environment and to shipping on the busy route towards the Port of Rotterdam. The Department of Public Works expects the definitive signing of the contract in the second half of March 2014.

The Coast Guard and local agencies continue to oversee operations to refloat the PSV 'Int'l Carrier'. The four person crew of the grounded motor vessel Int’l Carrier made an attempt to refloat the ship Tuesday evening after main propulsion was regained, but they were not successful. The ship ran aground Monday, about 9 miles northeast of Port Aransas. The ship’s owner, International Offshore Services, has signed a contract with Mammoet Salvage to develop a salvage plan and recover the vessel.

Costa Crociere has set up a technical committee, with representatives from Costa Cruises, Carnival Corporation & plc, Fincantieri, Rina and sector experts, including academics, who will work for the best possible drawing up of the plan, on a joint basis with the competent authorities. As anticipated in a letter sent to Costa Concordia Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli, Costa Cruises has called for tenders 10 companies throughout the world to present a working plan to enterely remove the hull of the Costa Concordia. On January 29, 2011 Mammoet Salvage refloated the research vessel Cabo de Hornos safely and redelivered her back to her owners, The ASMAR Shipyard in Talcahuano, Chile. The vessel was being built at the ASMAR Shipyard located in Talcahuano Naval Base when on February 27 2010 one of the largest earth quakes ever recorded hit the central region of Chile. The movement of the earthquake caused an accidental premature launch and the vessel slid into the sea. The Cabo de Hornos was planned to be launched on that February 27 in a formal ceremony in presence of the Chilean President.

Netherlands-based salvage specialists Multraship Salvage and Mammoet Salvage have successfully completed the removal of the wreck of a floating dock which sank in June 2007 at the Viktor Lenac shipyard, Rijeka, Croatia. The 541 ft Floating Dry Dock No. 7 weighed 7,000 tonnes and sank in 72 ft of water after an electrical power supply failure. Two previous refloating attempts had failed and after a thorough survey and testing of tanks it was decided that refloating of the dock was not feasible.

At a press conference the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Helga Pedersen, announced that the Norwegian government will propose to parliament that the U-864, a German submarine which sank in World War II, should be salvaged rather than left on the seabed and encased to ensure the safety of people and environment. The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) selected Mammoet Salvage for the potential salvage of the submarine which contains toxic mercury and explosives. The proposal will be discussed in the Norwegian parliament in the near future. The salvage operation of the submarine will be undertaken in the summer of 2010. In the period leading up to that Mammoet will prepare dedicated equipment for the operation.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) has decided to award the contract for the possible salvage of the U-864 submarine and its cargo of mercury to Mammoet Salvage B.V. Two options have been proposed to deal with the environmental hazard formed by the mercury in the U-864 submarine: (a) to encase the wreck and cover the seabed to prevent the spread of the pollution, and (b) to recover the wreck (salvage) and remove all the pollutants from the marine environment. Mammoet Salvage has proposed a safe and innovative salvage solution.

Mammoet Salvage of Schiedam, the Netherlands, agreed to terms for the removal of the wreck of the Liberian container ship, Safmarine Agulhas, which ran aground and broke in half in the South African port of East London. The operation will be carried out in South Africa in the coming months. Since starting its activities on January 1, 2006, Mammoet Salvage has completed ten salvage operations of varying sizes. Salvaging this wreck is the most extensive, specialized job yet. The insurers issued a call for tenders, inviting international salvage companies to submit plans for dismantling and removing the wreckage quickly, safely, professionally and – in particular – in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The Russian navy said a plan to raise the Kursk nuclear submarine from the bottom of the Barents Sea hit a snag when deep-sea divers had trouble cutting through the craft's hull. Vice Admiral Mikhail Motsak, coordinating the recovery operation, said on Russian television that an international team of divers had run into problems while making holes in the craft to affix cables and eventually haul the sub up. "Everything looked fine on paper and when testing the equipment on the surface. After a series of unexplained explosions, the Kursk sank last August with the loss of all 118 people on board. President Vladimir Putin has vowed to raise the craft and dispose of its nuclear reactors.
