Great Lakes Shipyard Overhauls RV Grayling

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, OH, finished the 5-year overhaul work on the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Grayling. Under a Fleet Maintenance Contract with the Great Lakes Science Center, Ann Arbor, MI of the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, the Grayling was drydocked and given a detailed inspection, cleaning, tune up, repair and modifications. Some of the major work items included overhauling the generators and engines, painting the hull, and repairing of the exhaust and propulsion systems. The 75 ft.

Great Lakes Shipyard Overhauls RV Sturgeon

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, completed five-year overhaul work on the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Sturgeon. Under a Fleet Maintenance Contract with the Great Lakes Science Center, Ann Arbor, MI of the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, the Sturgeon was drydocked and given a thorough cleaning, painting, inspection, repair and tune up. Some of the major work items included redesigning the hydraulic system, shaft and propulsion repairs, generator overhauls and steering system repairs. The 105 ft. long Sturgeon was built in 1974 and is home-ported in Cheboygan, MI. The Sturgeon is the Center's second largest vessel with great geographic range and advanced scientific abilities.

Second Research Vessel at Great Lakes Shipyard

Displaced features on nautical chart

The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) issued a Hydrolant stating that, due to a production problem that caused displaced features, NIMA has determined that digital nautical chart CD15 (Gulf of Mexico/Straits of Florida) is not to be used for navigation or situational awareness. OSI Validation Vastly Expands Markets

Offshore Systems International Ltd. - a leader in electronic charts and positioning systems for the maritime industry -- announced that Offshore's Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System (ECPINS) has been validated by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) of the U.S. Department of Defense for "proper and complete" display of NIMA Digital Nautical Chart (DNC) in Vector Product Format (VPF). DNC is the official electronic chart used by the U.S. Navy. Earlier this year, NIMA completed digitization of the worldwide DNC coverage required by the United States Navy for military use. The Canadian Department of National Defense (DND) requires the capability to operate with DNC charts, and initiated the development and test program with Offshore.

NIMA Issues Military Operations Advisory

The U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) issued a Special Advisory stating that coalition naval forces are conducting military operations in waters of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Arabian Gulf. All vessels in these waters are urged to keep a safe distance away from military vessels and to clearly identify themselves so as to avoid the inadvertent use of force. News Briefs

First Wave/Newpark Shipbuilding, in Galveston, Texas, has had a busy spring. First, the company was awarded a contract by Diamond Offshore Drilling to install a crane and perform annual survey work on Ocean Lexington. That contract was completed in March. Next, the company won a contract from Smit Americas, Inc. for drydocking of Ocean Hercules. The vessel was drydocked on the shipyard's 7,500-ton drydock for general maintenance and conversion from a seismic vessel to a telecommunication cable laying vessel. Finally, First Wave drydocked Pride Louisiana for Pride Offshore. The rig was docked in the Galveston Ship Channel, utilizing a heavy lift barge for an annual survey. The rig will depart upon completion of the survey.
