New Lifeboat Station Aids Greek SAR Services

A new lifeboat station has been opened on the Greek island of Chios – with the cooperation of International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) members – to help support the rescue of migrants in the Aegean. The Lifeboat station was made possible through a partnership between Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM), the maritime search and rescue service from the Netherlands, and the Hellenic Rescue Team (HRT), and with the support of the Maria Tsakos Foundation along with community leaders and local volunteers. At an event to celebrate the opening of the centre – which was completed in only three months – two lifeboat vessels donated by the KNRM, Athena and Arina to be deployed on the surrounding waters, were also christened.

Maritime Hall of Fame Honors Marine Visionaries

The 23rd Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame reception and awards dinner took place yesterday evening in New York where five individuals were honored in front of more than 350 of their colleagues from the international maritime transportation industry. The Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey founded the Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame in 1993 to recognize maritime visionaries who, through excellence in their company, organization or services, best exemplify the qualities of futuristic thinking that guides the maritime industry.

ClassNK, Maria Tsakos Begin Research Collaboration

The Maria Tsakos Foundation-International Center for Maritime Research and Tradition and ClassNK have embarked on a joint venture to cooperate on matters of common interest, with emphasis on maritime research and environmental protection. A signing ceremony to commemorate the agreement between the two partners was held at the Foundation’s headquarters in Athens on November 29, 2013.
