The recent crash in oil prices will cause the oil market to rebalance in ways that challenge traditional thinking about the responsiveness of supply and demand, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its annual Medium-Term Oil Market Report (MTOMR). The U.S. light, tight oil (LTO) revolution has made non-OPEC production more responsive to price swings than during previous market selloffs, the report said, adding that this would likely set the stage for a relatively swift recovery.

The recent geopolitical situation in Ukraine, including sanctions and other macroeconomic and political factors, could have a strong impact on the world’s oil and gas markets. Power generation from hydro, wind, solar and other renewable sources worldwide will exceed that from gas and be twice that from nuclear by 2016, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said today in its second annual Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report (MTRMR). According to the MTRMR, despite a difficult economic context, renewable power is expected to increase by 40% in the next five years. Renewables are now the fastest-growing power generation sector and will make up almost a quarter of the global power mix by 2018, up from an estimated 20% in 2011.

But the "Golden Age" is still in full swing as gas emerges as a significant transportation fuel, a new report says. Natural gas will continue to increase its share of the global energy mix, growing at 2.4% per year between now and 2018, the IEA said in its Medium-Term Gas Market Report (MTGMR) issued today. However, this projected growth rate is lower than the IEA’s forecast last year of 2.7%, due to persistent demand weakness in Europe as well as difficulties in upstream production growth in the Middle East and Africa. Warning that the world is not on track to limit the global temperature increase to 2°C, the International Energy Agency (IEA) urged governments to swiftly enact four energy policies that would keep climate goals alive without harming economic growth. “Climate change has quite frankly slipped to the back burner of policy priorities. But the problem is not going away – quite the opposite,” IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven said in London at the launch of a World Energy Outlook Special Report, Redrawing the Energy-Climate Map, which highlights the need for intensive action before 2020. In a review of Finnish energy policies launched, the International Energy Agency praised Finland for its commitment to a sustainable energy future. With its energy-intensive industries and its cold climate, Finland’s energy consumption per capita is the highest in the IEA. The rapid expansion of renewable technologies is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak assessment of global progress towards low-carbon energy, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in an annual report to the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM). “The drive to clean up the world’s energy system has stalled,” IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven told the CEM, which brings together ministers representing countries responsible for four-fifths of global greenhouse-gas emissions. To illustrate this inertia, the report, Tracking Clean Energy Progress, introduces the Energy Sector Carbon Intensity Index (ESCII), which shows how much carbon dioxide is emitted, on average, to provide a given unit of energy.

North America is at the forefront of a game-changing transformation in oil and gas production claims International Energy Agency publication. This year’s World Energy Outlook published by IEA finds that the extraordinary growth in oil and natural gas output in the United States will mean a sea-change in global energy flows. In the New Policies Scenario, the WEO’s central scenario, the United States becomes a net exporter of natural gas by 2020 and is almost self-sufficient in energy, in net terms, by 2035. North America emerges as a net oil exporter, accelerating the switch in direction of international oil trade, with almost 90% of Middle Eastern oil exports being drawn to Asia by 2035.

Renewable power generation is expected to continue its rapid growth over the next five years, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency<http://www.iea.org/> (IEA) that acknowledges the coming-of-age of the renewable energy sector. The report says that despite economic uncertainties in many countries, global power generation from hydropower, solar, wind and other renewable sources is projected to increase by more than 40% to almost 6 400 terawatt hours (TWh) - or roughly one-and-a-half times current electricity production in the United States. The study, released, marks the first time the IEA has devoted a medium-term report to renewable power sources, a recognition of the dynamic and increasing role of renewable energy in the global power mix.

Denmark is a leader in implementing well-designed policies for renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change, according to a review of Danish energy policies published today by the International Energy Agency (IEA).<http://www.iea.org> The review applauded Denmark's long-term vision for a low-carbon future - all Danish energy supply is to come from renewable sources by 2050 - and its achievements to date, but also sounded some notes of caution regarding the implementation of such an ambitious strategy. "The IEA commends Denmark and its people for the scope of their vision and their many successes in adopting sustainable energy policies," said IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven as she presented the review.

The naval architect received the award from the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven at the World Forum in The Hague during the Maritime Awards Gala on 6 November. Coming from a racing background, Gerard Dijkstra has been a key player in the revival of the J-class. Other nominees for the award were Henk de Vries of Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (Feadship) and Lex Keuning from the Delft University of Technology. The HISWA Excellence Award honours the most prominent and pioneering innovator in the watersports industry. This year marked the second time it was granted by the HISWA Holland Marine Industry during the Maritime Awards Gala.

Marin has been granted a $18.8m government subsidy for the construction of a unique research laboratory. The Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Maria van der Hoeven, was to officially announce the subsidy on a visit to the Marin headquarters on March 15. The “Twee Fasen Laboratorium” (TFLab), or “Two Phase” laboratory, will be unique in the world and it means that Marin has new possibilities to work on improving the safety of the shipping and offshore industry. Marin can also examine ways to improve energy efficiency and to reduce emissions.
