The shipping industry lacks clarity on future clean fuels and regulatory systems which is holding back companies from replacing ageing vessels amid pressure to decarbonise faster, U.N. agency UNCTAD said on Wednesday.Shipping, which transports over 80% of world trade and accounts for nearly 3% of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, has faced calls from environmentalists and investors to deliver more concrete action, including a carbon levy."We call for global action to decarbonise shipping.

U.S. marine petroleum transportation company Centerline Logistics has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with naval architecture and marine engineering firm Vard Marine to develop a customized 6,000-cubic-meter-capacity articulated tug and barge (ATB) liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge.Aiming to meet the shipping industry's growing need for LNG bunkering, the Jones Act-compliant ATB barge will be designed to navigate U.S. and International waters and to provide LNG refueling to a variety of ships as well as call at terminals.

Houston-based Stabilis Energy has joined SEA\LNG, the multi-sector industry coalition which is seeking to accelerate the widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.Commenting on the development, Peter Keller, Chairman, SEA\LNG, said: "Welcoming Stabilis Energy as a new member demonstrates SEA\LNG’s continued commitment within the ever expanding North American LNG market. LNG is growing in importance in both the energy and marine bunkering markets. Stabilis operates at the forefront of this expansion.”Stabilis Energy provides small-scale LNG production, distribution and fuelling services to multiple end markets in North America.

Shell and TravelCenters of America LLC (TA) to develop network of (LNG) fueling centers for road users; alongside that Shell is developing a marine bunkering infrastructure. Shell has been working to develop the LNG for Transport market globally. Last year, they announced their intention to collaborate with TA  and the finalization of that agreement is a major step toward making LNG fuels a reality for the U.S. heavy duty road customers. Shell has also announced that it will invest in two small-scale LNG production units that form the basis of two new LNG transport corridors in the Great Lakes and Gulf Coast regions that will provide LNG to marine and heavy duty road customers. This brings the total to three planned Shell LNG production units dedicated to transport in North America.

Improved bunkering facilities in the Caribbean region are planned as a new agreement is announced between Petrotrin and BP Marine, which will combine to provide improved fuel supply services along the key west coast ports of Trinidad. Petrotrin, the national oil Company of Trinidad and Tobago have an established marine bunkering infrastructure, supplying quality fuels from its refinery at Point-a-Pierre. BP Marine and Petrotrin will from 1st November combine their individual strengths in bunkering, customer service, marketing and marine products to creating a new alliance and a significantly higher level of service. BP Marine will now, in association with Petrotrin, market marine fuels through supply locations at all ports on the west coast of Trinidad.
