NYK Commences Operation of CTV for Offshore Wind Farm

NYK has delivered Rera As, an NYK-owned crew transport vessel (CTV), to Siemens Gamesa for the Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm.The ClassNK certified vessel is the first CTV owned and operated by the NYK Group and is largest gross tonnage CTV currently in operation in Japan (according to NYK research). NYK to Study, Trial Emission Reduction Gear On Up to 50 Bulk Carriers

NYK signed a business alliance agreement with Nakashima Propeller, a marine equipment manufacturer that develops and sells ship propellers as well as energy-saving devices, and Fluid Techno, a ship design company with fluid analysis technology, to explore options to help cut greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Specifically, the agreement signed on July 7 aims to verify the effects of energy-saving devices that enhance vessel fuel efficiency by improving water flow generated at the aft-end of ships, select optimal combinations of those energy-saving devices, and install them on existing ships.

NYK, ABS, WinGD Working on Battery-Hybrid System to Cut GHG Emissions from Ships

NYK and NYK Group company MTI Co., Ltd. (“MTI”), together with the American Bureau of Shipping (“ABS”) and Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. ("WinGD"), have started joint research for optimization of ship design by utilizing a battery-hybrid system to aid ship propulsion and thus reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vessels.A vessel’s main-engine revolutions may increase significantly when a vessel tries to maintain its sailing speed during strong waves and winds.This phenomenon is called “load fluctuation.” The shaft generator may also increase the burden on the main engine.

World's First: Wärtsila, Eidesvik to Equip OSV with Ammonia-fueled Combustion Engine

Norwegian offshore vessel owner Eidesvik and Finland-based marine equipment manufacturer Wartsila are going to convert an offshore supply vessel (OSV) to operate with an ammonia-fuelled combustion engine with the required fuel supply and safety system. "This project will be the first of its kind ever in the world and has a provisional completion target by the end of 2023," Wärtsilä said.The offshore vessel considered for a retrofit currently has Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines operating primarily with LNG fuel. The conversion will allow the vessel to operate with a 70 percent ammonia blend.

Wärtsilä, Carnival Ink Waste Treatment Systems Deal

Finnish marine equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä said it signed a framework agreement with Carnival Corporation covering the supply and installation of Wärtsilä’s waste water and dry waste treatment systems for up to 32 vessels across many of global cruise ship operator’s brands. Wärtsilä said its Membrane Bioreactor waste water treatment plants for handling of black and grey waste water surpass the most demanding standards currently set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for sewage discharge…

Schoellhorn-Albrecht Wins OPC Subcontract

Marine equipment manufacturer Schoellhorn-Albrecht said it has been awarded a subcontract from Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) to design and build various equipment for the U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC). Schoellhorn-Albrecht was selected for the deck machinery, deck fittings, accommodation ladder system and structural castings including the shaft strut and stern tube. The OPC is the U.S. Coast Guard’s largest shipbuilding program. The U.S. Coast Guard’s current contract calls for ESG to build 11 OPCs to replace the medium endurance cutters.

Damen Partners with TeamTec for BWTS

Damen Green Solutions has signed a letter of intent with Norwegian company TeamTec to supply and service the AVITALISTM ballast water treatment system. The system combines filtration and a proven, eco-friendly chemical treatment solution optimized for medium-sized to large vessels. The system is highly effective in water of any salinity, turbidity or temperature. The intention is to advance to a full partnership by the end of 2016. Currently AVITALISTM is undergoing ship board testing IMO type approval and USCG land-based testing.

Fincantieri Endorses ExxonMobil EALs

Mobil SHC Aware H 46 and Mobil SHC Aware H 68, part of ExxonMobil Marine Fuels and Lubricants’ range of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL), have received approval from Fincantieri Marine System Division, the marine equipment manufacturer of the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. ExxonMobil said an industry standard ASTM  test showed that its Mobil SHC Aware H 46 and Mobil SHC Aware H 68 qualify as low maintenance oils, providing extended operational life. All the oils in the Mobil SHC Aware H Series possess excellent shear stability and exceptional resistance to viscosity break-down…

Biggest HATLAPA Stern Rollers Ordered for Maersk Tugboats

HATLAPA builds its largest stern rollers to date for Maersk Supply Service’s two new tugs under construction in Chile. The Danish shipping company Maersk Supply Service has ordered two large stern rollers from HATLAPA to be used in the two vessels built at the Chilean shipyard Asenav. The tugs will be built for worldwide use in the oil and gas industry. The first of two orders was delivered in early 2013, with the second to be completed by March 2014, explained Sales Engineer Marcus Wolter. With this order, HATLAPA, the Uetersen, Germany-based marine equipment manufacturer has continued to strengthen its position as a leading manufacturer of offshore specific equipment.

Patterson Acquires Blackburn Marine

Manufacturer to Service Deck Fitting Product Line. Patterson Manufacturing, the marine equipment manufacturer based in Pittsburgh, today announced that it has acquired Blackburn Marine, a deck fitting manufacturer based in Canyon Lake, Texas. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. "We're pleased to be able to service Blackburn's excellent product lines," said David Grapes, CEO of Patterson. "Blackburn has been producing high-quality deck equipment for years, and their products are a fitting complement to our own. Patterson Manufacturing has been manufacturing winches, ratchet turnbuckles, tensors, and other marine equipment for more than 150 years.

MHI to License Marine Boiler Manufacturing and Marketing

Tokyo, March 28, 2011 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Jiujiang Haitian Equipment Manufacture Co., Ltd. (JHT), a state-owned major marine equipment manufacturer in China, have signed an agreement under which MHI will license marine boiler* technologies to JHT. JHT has been looking forward to acquiring marine boiler manufacturing technology from MHI for some time, while MHI has hoped to achieve greater penetration by its marine boilers into China's robustly expanding shipbuilding market. In this way, the new agreement meshes the aspirations of both companies.

Berg Wins Brazil Order

Count Berg Propulsion as the latest marine equipment manufacturer to join the rush to Brazil, as the company reportedly has secured its first order in Brazil six months after opening its dedicated sales office in Rio de Janeiro. Three single screw bunker vessels ordered through shipyard Renave will be equipped with controllable pitch propellers and fixed pitch tunnel thrusters from Berg. On completion, the vessels will be delivered to client Delima and time chartered to Brazilian energy major Petrobras. Featuring an overall length of 71.6m, a molded breadth of 15m and a draft of 4.25m, these 2500 dwt vessels are destined to service Petrobras requirements for inland waterway transportation in Brazil when they are delivered in 2014.
