Marine Institute Maps Atlantic Sea Bed

A team of international scientists, led by the Marine Institute in Ireland, has completed a transatlantic sea bed mapping exercise, which has revealed previously uncharted seabed features including mountains and ridges taller than Carrauntoohil. Footprints of icebergs moving across the seabed, an ancient glacial moraine and a mountain higher than Carrauntoohil in Co Kerry have been mapped across the Atlantic by the team of scientists on board the State’s research ship, the MV Celtic Explorer. It followed the route taken by ships dropping the first transatlantic telecommunications cable between Ireland and Newfoundland in Canada in 1857.

AXYS Deliver Newfoundland Oceanogrphic Buoys

AXYS Technologies Inc. deliver 8 oceanographic buoys to the Fisheries & Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (Marine Institute ). The buoys will expand the existing ocean observing network, known as “SmartBay ”, located at Placentia Bay along Newfoundland’s southern coastline. The data provides fishermen, vessel operators, weather forecasters and other stakeholders near real time access to a variety of marine meteorological and oceanographic data. Survival Training & The Virtual World

Citizens are sometimes left wondering how they can comply with the letter of the law. Dynamic Positioning in Ice Research Project Gets Green Light

Kongsberg Maritime DP and simulation systems provide foundation for improving ice operations. The final piece of a CAD $8.5 million research project to improve DP operations in ice fell into place on May 23, 2012 when the Government of Canada announced a contribution of $3.2 million to the project from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Led by long-time Kongsberg Maritime simulator customer CMS – the Centre for Marine Simulation (Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University), the five-year research project aims to improve the safety and efficiency of oil and gas operations in ice environments by improving dynamic positioning (DP) system technologies for operations in ice.

Ocean Innovation 2011: Sustainable Oceans

The Fisheries and Marine Institute announced preliminary details for Ocean Innovation 2011: Sustainable Oceans - Understanding the Value of Traditional Knowledge and Innovation. Ocean Innovation (OI) 2011 will take place at the Frobisher Inn in Iqaluit, Nunavut from October 18-21. Ocean Innovation, now in its 9th year. An initiative of the Marine Institute of Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland, the conference attracts presenters and delegates from across Canada and around the world. Ocean Innovation strives to introduce relevant topics centered on the latest innovations in the areas of maritime safety, efficiency of operations and sustainable ocean management. Ocean Innovation is organized as a two day, single-stream conference, with a parallel exhibition.

RBR Joins Smart Ocean Sensor Consortium

RBR has joined the Smart Ocean Sensor Consortium (SOSC) as a founding member. The SOSC is a group of key manufacturers and users of Oceanographic instruments dedicated to improving the reliability, utility and cost-effectiveness of hydrographic sensor networks through the adoption, development, and promotion of appropriate standard interfaces and protocols. Manufacturing members will supply a universal unique identifier (UUID) with each compliant instrument, and will comply with a group-defined interface to retrieve the UUID from the device's serial port. ShipConstructor on Course at FMI

Albacore Research Ltd. (ARL) announced the introduction of ShipConstructor into the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Systems Design three-year diploma programs at the Fisheries & Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI) in St. John’s, Canada. ShipConstructor is the easy-to-use, AutoCAD-based 3D product-modeling software for the design and fabrication of complete ships and offshore structures. Akin to the University of New Orleans’ implementation of ShipConstructor for an industry-focused approach to education, even more students will now have a working knowledge of ShipConstructor upon graduation, a significant advantage when entering the job market.

Baker Joins EBDG

Elliott Bay Design Group is pleased to announce that Gwen Baker has joined the staff as a Marine Designer. Gwen is a recent graduate of the Marine Institute at Memorial University in New Foundland, where she received her Diploma of Technology in Naval Architecture. For her first project, Gwen will be preparing 3-D composite modeling for the 260 ft. offshore supply vessel that the firm has been working on for Hornbeck Offshore Services.
