New Fuel Regs Drive Scrubber Business
The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and its members are preparing to meet higher demand for gas scrubbing systems to bring SOx emissions in line with the targets set by the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulfur content proposals. As previously reported by this correspondent in Maritime Reporter and Engineering News (December 2016 issue, page 24; January 2017 issue, page 28), the IMO has come in for some severe criticism over its proposals to introduce a global marine fuels sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent (mass/mass) by the year 2020.

Alfa Laval and RCL Close Scrubbers Deals
Alfa Laval said its PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system is gaining ground in the cruise ship market. Following a lengthy selection and qualification process, four PureSOx scrubbers have been ordered by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL). Three of these will be PureSOx 2.0 systems as presented at SMM 2014, while the fourth will be the first test inline version of PureSOx. Alfa Laval’s deliveries to RCL will extend over the summer of 2015. The PureSOx systems will be installed as retrofits aboard four Royal Caribbean International ships: three of the Freedom Class and one of the Voyager Class.
Wärtsilä Scrubber Systems for Stena Line ferries
Two Ro-Ro vessels owned and operated by Stena Line, the Sweden based transport and ferry company, are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä in-line closed-loop scrubber systems. The scrubbers will be installed on the 'Stena Transit' and 'Stena Transporter' ferries operating between Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands and Killingholme in the U.K. The order was placed with Wärtsilä in December 2014 and the retrofitting is scheduled to take place in Q4 2015 and Q1 2016. By installing Wärtsilä scrubber systems, the ferries will comply with the regulations covering emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx) while using conventional residual marine fuel (HFO). The operating routes of these two ferries fall within the North Sea's Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA).

Maersk Demonstrates BELCO Scrubber Technology
Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of DuPont, has partnered with the Maersk Group to successfully demonstrate BELCO Marine Scrubber technology aboard the Maersk Tukang, a containership with max TEU Capacity of 8,112. The BELCO Marine Scrubber was tested over six days in May 2014 as it sailed from the Port of Algeciras, Spain, to Genoa, Italy. Representatives from BELCO and Maersk were on board, along with a surveyor from the American Bureau of Shipping who was there to witness and monitor the full testing as the system awaits class certification, expected later this year. The BELCO Marine Scrubber was installed on the Tukang, in 2013 in Qingdao, China, during a scheduled drydock.
