Virtual Marine Expands Representation in Australia and New Zealand

Canada-based marine simulation training firm Virtual Marine Technology Inc. announced it has signed a strategic market representation agreement with New Zealand's Global Marine Technical Services (GMTS), extending its in-country coverage to Australia and New Zealand. Kilo Marine Joins KVH Watch Solution Partner Program

KVH Industries, Inc. announced that marine technical services firm Kilo Marine has joined the KVH Watch Solution Partner program and will offer KVH Watch connectivity as part of a wide range of marine services. In particular, the digital services that Kilo Marine offers via its V-Node platform will use KVH Watch to provide dedicated connectivity and on-demand Remote Expert Intervention, allowing Kilo Marine technicians to support their customer base anywhere around the world.

Wilhelmsen Drops Acquisition of Drew Marine

A US District Court for the District of Columbia announced that it will grant the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) motion for an injunction to block Wilhelmsen’s acquisition of Drew Marine Technical Services.Consequently, Wilhelmsen and Drew have agreed to abandon the transaction.“We disagree with the views of the US competition authorities. This would have been an important strategic investment for our group, which we believe would have meant better services and better prices for our customer. We are therefore disappointed that we will not be able to bring the deal to a close,” says Thomas Wilhelmsen, group CEO in Wilhelmsen.Wilhelmsen and Drew have agreed on a termination fee of USD 20 million.

Dynamic Positioning Training Center Launched in Shanghai

C-MAR, an international marine and offshore services provider, and the Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) has officially launched the Dynamic Positioning training facility (DPC-SMU) at a special ceremony in Shanghai. In the first joint venture of its kind, C-MAR will provide dynamic positioning (DP) training to Chinese nationals and vessel operators in the offshore oil and gas sector, bringing the company’s extensive experience and expertise to the world’s fastest growing maritime sector.

Ship Management Firms Form Alliance

LMS Shipmanagement & Wallem Group team up to provide ship management, crewing, & marine technical services. International Shipholding Corporation (ISH) announce that LMS Shipmanagement, Inc., its wholly-owned subsidiary, and Wallem Group Ltd. have agreed to form an alliance encompassing the ship management, crewing, and marine technical services for ISH’s International Flag vessels. While LMS and Wallem will continue to operate independently, the alliance provides that, based on expertise, the daily functions will be divided between the two companies. Kongsberg Delivers Offshore Ops Simulator

Superior Energy Services of Houston, Texas, took delivery of one of the most advanced maritime training simulators ever developed, in April 2012. The next-generation simulator from Kongsberg Maritime will be used to provide integrated, real-time training for Superior’s offshore marine personnel at its new facility in Anchorage, Alaska. Crowley, Receives 10th ATB in Mississippi

On the wake of the christening and launching of its newest heavy-lift-series deck barge in Portland, Ore., Crowley took delivery of its newest Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) - the tug Commitment and barge 650-6 in Pascagoula, Miss, on April 2. The 185,000-barrel ATB, the 10th in Crowley's fleet, has been chartered by a major energy company to transport petroleum products on the U.S. West Coast beginning in April. Wärtsilä and V.Ships to Form Partnership

Wärtsilä and V.Ships agreed to cooperate on the provision of a broad spectrum of marine technical services to third parties in the marine market. Wärtsilä and V.Ships plan to offer an integrated portfolio of services that encompasses the full lifecycle of ship's machineries at competitive cost. The new partnership offering of Ship and Technical Management Services embrace technical supervision, machinery maintenance planning, conditioned based maintenance and planning, software updates, training programs, spare parts and labor, logistics and accounting for technical management. The shortage of skilled labor and the increasing complexity of ship machinery represent a challenge for the marine industry.

RINA, China Class Team on Yard Quality

Italian classification society and certification group RINA and the China Classification Society (CCS) have joined forces to deliver quality management system expertise to small and medium-size Chinese shipyards which intend to build ships for international trade. The two class societies have set up a joint venture company, Yizhong Marine Technical Services, based in Shanghai. It will assist between five and ten yards in its first year. The yards, suitable for building ships up to 50,000 dwt, are those which currently build only to internal Chinese standards but which wish to enter the international shipbuilding market. Yizhong will train the management and help them build and run a complete quality management system capable of building ships to international classed standards.
