Zero emission is a nice idea, but who’s going to pay for it? The U.S. EPA is readying big money for zero emission ports.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working on two high-profile port initiatives that it hopes will move the needle in a big way towards U.S. ports’ zero emissions (ZE) operations and clean air goals.The first initiative started last May when EPA published a request for information and comments that would help the Agency develop Guidance it could use to evaluate funding requests for projects for zero-emission vehicles, port equipment and related infrastructure.

Crowley Maritime Corp. has appointed Jonathan Zier manager of business development in Houston.Zier will assist customers globally with marine transportation projects such as sealifts and beach-landings, as well as offshore and coastal towing and installation of rigs, spars and other structures. He will also be responsible for providing solutions for alternative energy projects such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, offshore wind power generation, and other projects requiring offshore or coastal equipment and expertise.Zier will report to Johan Sperling…

Michael E. Ford, 75, of Waretown, NJ, passed away on January 4, 2014. Born in Washington, DC and raised in Chevy Chase, Md., he graduated from the #United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, in 1960 with a degree in Marine Engineering, and earned a master’s degree in International Business from Bernard M. Baruch College, New York, in 1979. He served his country as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve. Following his graduation from Kings Point, he sailed for the Alcoa Steamship Company, raising his Coast Guard license to Chief Engineer, unlimited.

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a global marine services provider based in New Jersey, has announced a number of marine transportation projects the company has been involved with over the last months. SIMS Metals: Donjon tugs transport the barges that carry all of the steel scrap in the New York/Metropolitan Area for SIMS Metals as part of a contract that runs through 2015. Donjon handles approximately 1,800,000 tons of mixed grades of scrap steel each year. O&G Industries: Donjon transports various types and grades of bulk stone products from two upstate New York quarries to various New York/Metropolitan Area receiving facilities in support of its customer, O&G Industries, and its customers. Donjon’s agreement with O&G runs through Spring 2012.

Dr. Kirsi Tikka has joined ABS as Vice President Engineering for ABS Europe and will be assigned to the London Office in January 2002. Robert Spencer will continue as Director of Engineering for Europe, reporting to Dr. Tikka. Dr. Tikka joins ABS from the prestigious Webb Institute where she has served as Professor of Naval Architecture since 1995. Dr. Tikka also worked at Chevron Shipping Company in San Francisco from 1989 to 1995. She was in the Tanker Planning and Economics Division on the President's staff and performed economic analyses for marine transportation projects.
