Grounding Averted: Disabled Box Ship Steered to Safety in the UK

Kelleher to Succeed Tivnan as Ardmore Shipping CFO

Tanker owner/operator Ardmore Shipping Corporation on Wednesday announced the planned departure of its current chief financial officer Paul Tivnan and appointment of new CFO Bart Kelleher, effective September 28, 2022.Anthony Gurnee, Ardmore's chief executive officer, said, Kelleher and Tivnan will overlap and work together from September 1 to "achieve an orderly and well-planned transition".Kelleher brings to the role more than 25 years of progressive experience in the maritime, finance, energy and industrials sectors, having most recently served as chief executive officer of Chembulk Tankers. Australian Maritime College Partners with IAMPE

The Australian Maritime College (AMC), part of the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives (IAMPE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreeing to work together on professional development for the maritime and port industry. Under the MOU, AMC and the IAMPE will acknowledge and endorse each other’s programs related to port and terminal education and training. The IAMPE will look to provide a professional certification as Marine Terminal Operator (MTO) to AMC undergraduate students for successfully completing the maritime undergraduate program. In addition, AMC is reviewing IAMPE programs for the granting of academic credit to graduate students in their new Maritime Business Administration in Maritime Management program.

UAE Emerges as Hub for Companies Helping Venezuela Avoid US Oil Sanctions

In June, the United States imposed sanctions on half a dozen oil tankers managed by established shipping firms. It was a major escalation of American attempts to choke off Venezuela’s oil trade.Within weeks, a little-known company based in the United Arab Emirates took over management of several tankers that had been shipping Venezuelan oil. The vessels got new names. And then they resumed transporting Venezuelan crude.The company, Muhit Maritime FZE, is one of three UAE-based entities identified by Reuters that have shipped Venezuelan crude and fuel during the second half of this year. Their role emerges from an examination of internal shipping documents from Venezuela’s state oil company as well as third-party shipping and vessel tracking data.

Abadan Ports Exports Up 56% in 2018

Illegal Salvors Fined for Plunder of WW1 Shipwreck

Ernst Russ Acquires Ships Financed by ABN AMRO

The Ernst Russ Group has successfully completed another transaction and acquired two container ships with capacities of 2,450 TEU and 2,785 TEU and an average age of just under 12 years. Global Transportation & Logistics provided financing to Ernst Russ. Purchase price for the two container ships is undisclosed. The transaction was structured and carried out by Ernst Russ Maritime Management GmbH & Co. KG as the maritime asset manager of the Ernst Russ Group. A company within the northern German maritime cluster has been given responsibility for the technical management of the ships. Another experienced partner will be in charge of chartering.

Ships off U.N. Blacklist as China Ends North Korean Crewing

The United Nations Security Council lifted North Korean sanctions on five ships after China secured assurances that the vessels would no longer use North Korean crews, a council diplomat said on Sunday. The ships were among 31 vessels sanctioned by the 15-member council on March 2 because they were linked to Ocean Maritime Management (OMM), a North Korean shipping firm known to transport arms and other illicit goods for the secretive state. A U.N. Security Council diplomat elaborated further on Sunday, saying that China had secured assurances that the vessels would no longer use North Korean crews and that was why the ships were removed from the blacklist. The Chinese mission to the United Nations was not immediately available to comment.

Security Council lifts N. Korea Sanctions on five ships

The United Nations Security Council said on Saturday it had lifted sanctions on five ships that were blacklisted in March for ties to North Korea's arms trade. The ships were among 31 vessels sanctioned by the 15-member council on March 2 because they were linked to Ocean Maritime Management (OMM), a North Korean shipping firm known to transport arms and other illicit goods for the secretive state. The ships removed from the blacklist are Dawnlight, Every Bright, Gold Star 3, Orion Star and South Hill 5. The Security Council listed the vessels as part of sweeping sanctions adopted in March, following North Korea's fourth nuclear test in January. Just a few weeks later the council removed four ships from the list at China's request.

Tax Sops for Indian Shipping Industry

In order to support the Indian shipping industry, the Government of India has exempted Customs and Excise Duty leviable on bunker fuels used in Indian flag vessels for transportation of mix of EXIM, domestic and empty containers between two or more ports in India. Government has brought in a uniform abatement of service tax for transportation of goods by rail, road and sea vessels. Indian shipping industry has been provided cargo support through Right of First Refusal (RoFR). Government has taken policy decision to allow shipping enterprises based in India to acquire ships abroad and also flag them in the country of their convenience. As a step towards promoting “Ease of Doing Business” methodology for computation of period of stay of seafarers in India has been redefined.

China: 'Illegal' Fishing in S.China Sea to be Met Harshly

China's Supreme Court said on Tuesday people caught illegally fishing in Chinese waters could be jailed for up to a year, issuing a judicial interpretation defining those waters as including China's exclusive economic zones. An arbitration court in The Hague ruled last month that China had no historic title over the waters of the South China Sea and that it had breached the Philippines' sovereign rights with various actions in the sea, infuriating Beijing which dismissed the case. None of China's reefs and holdings in the Spratly Islands entitled it to a 200-mile exclusive economic zone, the court decided. China's Supreme Court made no direct mention of the South China Sea or The Hague ruling, but said its judicial interpretation was made in accordance with both Chinese law and the U.N.

Hapag-Lloyd Begins Training Programs

Sixty-four young men and women started their careers at Hapag-Lloyd on yesterday (August 01). Chief Executive Office Rolf Habben Jansen warmly welcomed the new apprentices this morning during an event held at Hapag-Lloyd’s headquarters in Hamburg. In the land division, 21 young men and 17 young women began their training programs to become shipping agents, forwarding and logistics clerks, office management clerks and warehousing specialists. In addition, some of the on-shore apprentices are also starting dual-track courses of study in Logistics Management, Business Administration, Maritime Management, Information Systems and Applied Informatics. Four more grant holders will also join the IT department in October.

China Clarifies Maritime Jurisdiction

The Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Tuesday issued a regulation of judicial interpretation to clarify China's jurisdiction over its territorial seas, reports Xinhua. The explanation provides clear legal basis for China to safeguard maritime order, marine safety and interests, and to exercise integrated management over the country's jurisdictional seas, said an SPC statement. The regulation, taking effect on Tuesday, stated that Chinese citizens or foreigners would be pursued criminal liability if they were engaged in illegal hunting or fishing, or killing endangered wildlife in China's jurisdictional seas. The judicial explanation, based on Chinese law, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and judicial practices, further clarifies China's maritime jurisdiction, the statement said.

IAMPE Certifies Port Professionals

The International Association of Maritime and Port Professionals (IAMPE) has informed about the Accredited Marine Port Executive Professional Certification. This advanced certification is designed to provide a gold standard for professional education and certification in the international port and maritime industry and mirrors other professional certifications issued in various industrial disciplines. The professional certification issued by the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives shall be designated as AMPE. To qualify, individuals in the industry may apply to the IAMPE for certification. The requirements include a base program of education or certification.
