UK-based construction services provider S. Walsh & Sons has ordered a Multi Cat 1908 from Damen Shipyards Group. After finalizing a number of modifications, Damen will deliver the 19-meter long vessel ten weeks after receiving the order.Part of the GRS Group, S. Walsh & Sons is London’s premier construction partners, delivering end-to-end materials handling services to the UK civil engineering and construction industries. This comprises excavation, freight (marine, rail and road), materials processing, environmental management, and land remediation.

A fishing crew is back on land today after a fouled anchor line stranded them about 115 miles east of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Saturday. Initially, the four-person crew aboard the 61-foot fishing vessel Angela Michelle contacted the Sector Boston Command Center when their line became wrapped in the ship's rudder and propeller. Rescue crews from the Coast Guard Cutter Legare, a 270-foot Medium Endurance Cutter from Portsmouth, Virginia, arrived on scene and took the vessel in tow toward Gloucester, Massachusetts. They were met Sunday at about 9 a.m by a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Station Gloucester who relieved tow and took the Angela Michelle into port. They arrived safely at the pier in Gloucester at about 1 p.m.

Over 100 representatives from the German shipping community attended a seminar entitled ‘Sanctions, Drugs and Guns’ in Hamburg, Germany last week (15 September 2011), which was hosted by the ‘A’ rated 150 million GT North P&I club. Simon Williams, North’s associate director and joint regional head for Germany, told delegates that pirate attacks, political sanctions and drug trafficking were becoming critical issues for the global shipping industry and its insurers. ‘It is thus vital that we debate these issues as fully and openly as possible in the search for practical solutions,’ he said. North P&I Club recently executed a round of staff promotions across it various operating departments that take effect tomorrow. Joint managing director Paul Jennings says, "We congratulate all 19 staff members on their excellent and well-deserved achievements. The most prestigious promotion is for Alan Lo, who becomes a director of club’s wholly owned management company, North Insurance Management Limited (NIML). Lo has managed North’s Hong Kong office since 1997 and became general manager Asia-Pacific when the club’s Singapore office opened in 2007.

GT North of England P&I club has warned its shipowner members to protect themselves from the increasing risk of claims for charterers’ unpaid bunkers. The advice comes in the latest issue of the club’s loss-prevention newsletter Signals. According to Mark Robinson of the club’s freight, demurrage and defence department, “The recent downturn in the shipping markets and the world economy has unfortunately led to some charterers going out of business. North said that even though the obligation to provide and pay for fuel under a time charterer rests with the defaulting charterer, and that the owner is not a party to the bunker supply contract, owners and their ships are vulnerable to action in many jurisdictions.

The North of England P&I club has warned its members this week that the International Maritime Organization's new ship-security rules could have a significant impact on the commercial aspects of their operations when it comes into force on 1 July 2004. In the latest issue of its loss-prevention newsletter 'Signals', the 45 million GT club says all existing and future contracts relating to ships' operations - including charterparties, bills of lading and crew contracts - will need reviewing in the light of new obligations and risks created by the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. 'One of the main objectives of the ISPS Code is to prevent ships being used by terrorists,' says FD&D department lawyer Mark Robinson.

The House Homeland Security Committee conducted a hearing entitled Securing LNG Tankers to Protect the Homeland. Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) stated that he was concerned about the significant increase in LNG imports and the increased safety and security risks related thereto. The 'A' rated, 65 million GT North of England P&I Club has alerted shipowners in the Middle East and India yesterday (20 September 2006) to the possibility of more sale and purchase disputes and a further increase in their P&I premiums. The warnings were given at a seminar attended by around 80 representatives of Middle-Eastern and Indian shipowners at the Dubai Beach Resort in the UAE, which North of England organised in conjunction with sale and purchase experts from international shipping law firms Ince & Co and Mills & Co.
