Uotinen Joins Robert Allan Ltd.

Sami Uotinen will join naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. on October 1, responsible for European Business Development initiatives, operating from Turku, Finland.   Uotinen, a graduate naval architect, joins Robert Allan Ltd. from Rolls Royce, where he has worked since 2000, most recently as North American Sales Manager for Z-Drive propulsion. He has also held positions at Aquamaster, Kamewa and Kvaerner Masa Yards.

Board Changes at Aker Arctic Technology

After the acquisition of 66.4% of the shares by Finnish Industry Investment Ltd (fully owned by the State of Finland) Aker Arctic Technology Inc.’s extraordinary shareholders’ meeting today appointed the new Board of Directors for the company. Ole Johansson was nominated Chairman and Juha Marjosola Vice-Chairman of the Board. The board members are Ole Johansson, Juha Koskela (ABB Oy), Antti Kummu (Finnish Industry Investment), Valborg Lundegaard (Aker Engineering & Technology A/S) and Juha Marjosola (Finnish Industry Investment). Ole Johansson, BSc (Econ.) served as the President&CEO of Wärtsilä Corporation from 2000 to 2011. He is the Chairman of eQ Oyj and member of the Board of Svenska Handelsbanken AB.

Star Cruises of Malaysia to Order Metso DNA System

MS Star Pisces cruise ship will be operated by a Metso DNA automation system from March 2013.

The Star Cruises of Malaysia has chosen Metso to refurbish the automation system on its MS Star Pisces cruise ship that sails in the Far East. The vessel's new automation will increase reliability and customer comfort. After docking in Hong Kong in February, the vessel will continue its cruise program from March 2013 onwards. Metso will supply its state-of-the-art Metso DNA system to replace the present Damatic Classic automation system that it had supplied earlier. Ship automation systems from Metso have a long history.

A Success Story: Alaska Ship & Drydock

A new maintenance company with no shipyard experience takes a struggling repair yard, converted from an old cannery, and transforms it into a success story. Alaska Ship & Drydock (ASD) is on its way to achieving its vision of becoming the maritime support center for the North Pacific and Arctic Oceans. The yard’s story is tied to the economic development in Southeast Alaska and its turning point came with the construction of the MV Susitna, the first ice strengthened twin hull ferry, commissioned by the Office of Naval Research.

Huntingford, Davenport Join Capilano Maritime

Capilano Maritime Design Ltd., a naval architecture design firm based in North Vancouver, BC, Canada announced that John Huntingford has recently joined the firm as Senior Structural Designer. Huntingford gained experience in the maritime industry as an Outfit Designer for Kvaerner Masa Marine where he worked on design projects for the State of Maine and Alaska, as well as patrol vessels for Australia. He graduated from the Landing School of Boat Building and Yacht Design in Maine, USA and has most recently worked as a Designer and Technical Liaison for Vancouver Shipyards Ltd.

SNAME Focused Panel Sessions, 2009 Meeting

The focused panel sessions at the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers (SNAME) Annual Meeting and Expo (October 21-23 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island) will feature four timely topics: Electric Ships; Renewable Energy from the Oceans; Unmanned and Autonomous Ships of the Future; and Ship Efficiency in the Greenhouse Gas Era. Each two-hour panel session will be chaired and moderated by experienced SNAME members. Each session will have three leading experts who will make thirty minute presentations on their area of expertise, followed by a moderated thirty minute discussion period which will include questions and answers from the audience.

Rotkirch Named Chairman and CEO of Grand Bahama Shipyard

Carl-Gustaf (Calle) Rotkirch, a 32-year maritime industry veteran, has been named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Bahama Shipyard, Ltd., effective August 1, 2008. In this capacity, Rotkirch will oversee all operations of the shipyard, which is one of the largest cruise ship repair facilities in the world; Grand Bahama Shipyard services more than 100 cruise ships, cargo vessels, tankers, and naval vessels annually. Managing Director David Dalgleish will continue his day to day operation of the yard while reporting directly to Rotkirch.

Cruise + Ferry 2001 Preview

This year's Cruise + Ferry Exhibition promises to be even bigger than it was in 1999. The biennial show, which draws thousands of cruise and ferry operators, chief engineers, interior designers and naval architects is recognized worldwide as the premier exhibition in its market. With more than 450 companies representing more than 45 countries already scheduled to show off their innovations, record visitor and delegate participation is also expected at the conference, which will be held from May 8-10. With booths situated in London's Grand and West halls of Olympia, attendees will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with the leading providers of products and services to the cruise, ferry and fast ferry industries.

Kvaerner Masa-Yards Piikkio Works Signs Contract with Meyer Werft

Kvaerner Masa-Yards Piikkio Works has signed a contract with the German shipyard, Meyer Werft, for the delivery of nearly 2000 cabin and bathroom modules for two cruise ships on order in Papenburg for Royal Caribbean International. The order is worth more than $30 million ($200 million FIM). The cabin and bathroom modules will be delivered to the shipyard before the beginning of 2004. The cabins to be delivered are of the same standard regarding design and construction technology as the cabins delivered to Kvaerner Masa-Yards’ own shipyard building the Voyager-class ships to the same owner.

The Adventure of the Seas, newbuilding 1346, was delivered at Kvaerner Masa-Yards’ Turku shipyard. Adventure of the Seas is the third cruise ship in the Voyager-class for Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. The first two ships, Voyager of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas, were deliver in October 1999 and September 2000, respectively. The series continues with NB-1347, Navigator of the Seas and NB-1348. Adventure of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 137,300, and a passenger capacity of 3,800 passengers, a crew capacity of 1,200 persons, giving a total number of 5,020 people onboard. In addition to the total length of 1020ft., the breadth of 126 ft at waterline level and her height of 237 ft. This Post-Pamamax size has allowed for unique design feature and interior solutions.

A new board of directors has been elected at Kvaerner Masa-Yards, Inc. Hans Petter Finne, executive vice president of Kvaerner ASA, has been appointed as the chairman of the board. The members of the board include: Jorma Eloranta, president and CEO of Kvaerner Masa-Yards; Finn Berg-Jacobsen, CFO of Kvaerner ASA; and Richard Petrie, executive vice president of Kvaerner Investments. Aarne Ukkola and Jorma Malinen continue as representatives of the personnel.

Kvaerner Masa-Yards Breaks the Ice in Russia

The Ultra Voyager will be Roughly 15 percent larger than Voyager (pictured above), the Ultra Voyager will be 126 ft. by 1,112 ft. Carnival Takes Delivery of Carnival Miracle

Carnival Cruise Lines has taken delivery of its 20th Fun Ship, the 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle. The delivery took place during traditional handover ceremonies in Helsinki at Kvaerner Masa-Yards, the Finnish shipyard that constructed the massive $375 million SuperLiner.
