Konecranes to Collaborate with KION Group

Konecranes to buy certain assets of the container handling truck business of KION Group-owned Linde Material Handling. The KION Group, a manufacturers of industrial trucks, and Konecranes, a  group of Lifting Businesses™ have announced that Konecranes has agreed to buy certain assets of the container handling truck business of Linde Material Handling, which is wholly owned by KION Group. The two groups have also signed a long-term supply agreement and will collaborate to further increase the global competitiveness of their respective container handling truck activities. The value of the assets purchased is not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close during the 2nd quarter of 2013.

Konecranes Subsidiary Acquires Stake in MMH Holdings

HMM Acquisition Corp., a wholly owned Konecranes Inc. subsidiary, has acquired 59.2 percent of the shares of MMH Holdings, Inc., the owner of U.S. based Morris Materials Handling, Inc. The total consideration amounts to apprx. $38.5m. Morris Material Handling, Inc., is a player in the maintenance service and overhead crane industry. Morris Material Handling, Inc. has its headquarters in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Annual sales for the company in fiscal year 2005 were approximately $170m. First half of fiscal year 2006 sales were $102m, with an operating profit of $5.5 M (5.4% of sales). The company has approximately 980 employees. MHI's Entity to Oversee Material Handling Equipment, Engine and Turbocharger Businesses

Today Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) decided in principle to launch a new wholly owned entity to integrally oversee its current businesses in material handling equipment centered on forklift trucks, engines and turbochargers. The new entity will serve as an independent management body to provide integrated and swift responsive oversight of these three core businesses. Under this initiative, MHI looks to generate synergy benefits, streamline its organization, and explore new fields as a way of significantly strengthening its competitiveness.

Ace Targets Inland Waterways

Overhead crane and hoist manufacturer Ace World Companies has made its first appearance at the Inland Marine Expo, which took place for the third time this May at America’s Center Convention Complex in St. Louis, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The expo is the annual trade show for the inland and intracoastal marine transportation industry, which is a target market for the manufacturer and its recently acquired business, Pullift Corporation, a provider of standard and custom material handling equipment, including winches. Camron Ghanemi, vice president at Ace, said, “I was encouraged by recent comments from Michael Toohey, the president of the Waterways Council, who referenced ‘record funding’ to modernize the nation’s inland waterways transportation system.

TTS Marine Gets Order

Norwegian ship and port equipment supplier TTS Marine ASA said on January 28 its port and material handling subsidiary TTS Handling Systems AS has landed a NOK60m order from China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co Ltd. The order covers the delivery of panel production line to increase the welding capacity at Shanhaiguan New Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd. The equipment will be delivered during spring 2009.

Gulf Coast Dockside Operations and Assets acquired by Associated Terminals

Associated Terminals recently expanded its stevedoring and material handling operations on the lower Mississippi River with its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Gulf Coast Dockside, Inc., along with a substantial interest in Bulk Material Transfer, Inc. Gulf Coast Dockside is a stevedoring company whose primary operations are located in Chalmette, LA, near milepost 90.5 of the lower Mississippi River. The company’s assets include three high capacity floating cranes and all of the attachments and equipment related to the stevedoring operation. Associated also assumes all of the existing contractual stevedoring obligations. Bulk Material Transfer operates a bulk material handling facility at the Chalmette slip within the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District.

Oldenburg Group Gets Subcontract to supply LCS Vessels

According to a Jan. 14 report from the Pierce County Herald a Milwaukee firm will get over $200m to provide material handling systems for the new U.S. Navy ships to be built in Marinette and Alabama. The Oldenburg Group said it would build cranes, launching systems, lift-platforms, and hatch covers for the 55 littoral combat ships recently approved by Congress. (Source: Pierce County Herald)

New Ownership at Charleston/Carolina’s Rigging

Established in 1988 by Rick and Valerie Sawin as Charleston’s Rigging and Marine Hardware, firm has played significant roles in supplying products to support the construction of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, raising The Hunley, and now transitions to the next generation. Jessica Sage, Chief Financial Officer and Skip Sawin, Chief Operating Officer for Charleston’s Rigging and Carolina’s Rigging announce the purchase of the corporation from Rick and Valerie Sawin, founders of the firm.

TTS Wins Translifter Contract

Finland’s TTS Liftec Oy, Tampere, part of the Port and Material Handling Division of Norway’s TTS Marine ASA, Bergen, has won a contract to supply two ports in northern Europe with Translifters for new Transfennica services from Finland. Transfennica, one of Finland’s largest shipowners, uses cassettes as part of the loading/unloading operation for cargoes throughout Europe. As from January 1, Transfennica is starting new services between various ports in Finland, the largest being Hanko, Hamina and Rauma, to Rostock (Germany) and Gdynia (Poland). In both ports, the cargo handling companies – Poland’s Idal Group in Gdynia and Germany’s MSB in Rostock, have ordered two Translifters each from TTS Liftec.

The J D Neuhaus company have a long established reputation for the design and manufacture of materials handling products. Ballard Power Posts Smaller-Than-Expected Loss

Canadian fuel cell maker Ballard Power Systems Inc posted a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by higher revenue from its engineering services and material handling businesses. Revenue from Ballard's engineering services business, which counts Volkswagen AG among its customers, rose nearly threefold in the first quarter ended March 31. The business accounted for half of Ballard's total revenue in the quarter. Ballard said it expected to begin supplying fuel cell stacks to service Plug Power Inc's order with Wal-Mart Stores Inc in the second half of this year.

Global Materials Services Acquires Arrow Terminals

Global Materials Services LLC (GMS) has acquired Arrow Terminals, Inc. of Sewickley, Pa., an operator of marine terminals. Arrow operates seven domestic river terminals in Industry, Pa.; Chicago, Ill.; Houston; Decatur, Ala.; Mingo Junction, Ohio; and Follansbee and Brooklyn Junction, W.V., which are engaged in material handling and processing operations for ferroalloy and other bulk products. Arrow also provides on-premise logistics services at steel mills and other plant sites. GMS operates seven other river terminals, five on the Mississippi River and two on the Arkansas River. These terminals provide warehouse and distribution services for steel and bulk shippers, including trucking to customer plant sites.

Kinder Morgan to Purchase Terminal Assets at Port of Vancouver

Partners, L.P. of British Columbia. on a 139-acre site. which allow the terminal to handle over 3.5 million tons of cargo annually. to shippers in western and central Canada, and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2007.

18 Kalmar RT 240s for US DoD

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order to supply a further 18 rough terrain container handlers to the United States Department of Defense. Destined to replace older equipment, the Kalmar RT240s will be delivered to multiple locations across the United States by the end of the year 2015. The total value of the order is approximately EUR 16 million (USD 18 million). The Kalmar RT240 provides exceptional performance, able to handle containerised loads of up to 53,000lbs (24 tonnes) across all types of terrain.
