Portland Tugboat and McAllister Towing - A Blended Family Business
On Thursday, March 14, Captain Arthur Fournier, founder of the 54-year old Portland Tugboat and Shipdocking Company, rocked the tugboat world when he, along with Captain Brian McAllister, founder of McAllister Towing and Transportation, announced that the two companies would merge together as one. According to an industry source, the announcement, which was made by the heads of both family-owned businesses at the Port of Portland Propeller Club's monthly meeting, defines a new generation in the growing tugboat industry. Also present for the announcement were president Brian McAllister's nephew, A.J., and sons Eric and Buckley, who will continue to serve in their current positions as vice presidents with the company.
New Floating Drydock for Detyens
Detyens Shipyards, Inc., a staple in Charleston’s maritime community since 1962, took delivery of a newly constructed floating drydock on December 11, 2015. The new 400’ x 108’ floating drydock, which will eventually replace Detyens’ existing floating drydock, was built by Corn Island Shipyard in Indiana. The drydock was pushed down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers by Excell Marine’s inland tug boat, the Arthur E Snider. McAllister Towing and Transportation’s ocean towing tug boat, the Eileen McAllister took over the tow in New Orleans for delivery to Detyens Shipyards’ Cooper River facility.

McAllister Towing Orders New Tug Pair from Eastern
McAllister Towing and Transportation Co. has ordered two new 5,000 hp tugs scheduled for delivery this year. The first vessel, which will be named Janet M. McAllister, is scheduled for a spring delivery; the second vessel, Vicki M. McAllister, will hit the water this summer. Designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle, Wash., the tugs are being built to ABS classification standards by Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City, Fla. Measuring 98 ft. (29.8 m), each will be equipped with two EMD engines and two Schottel drives - designed to produce a bollard pull up to 60 tons. Fire pump equipment will be Detroit Diesel PTO at 1,800 rpm to Goulds 3410 eight by 10 in. pump, producing 3,000 gpm delivered to two fire monitors, each with 1,500 gallons AAAF Foam Capacity.

Eastern Delivers Tractor Tug to McAllister
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has delivered the Twin Z-drive Reverse Tractor Tug JEFFREY McALLISTER to McAllister Towing and Transportation Co., Inc. on January 13, 2017. McAllister is honoring Captain Jeffrey McAllister as the vessels namesake. Capt. Jeffrey McAllister is a member of the fifth generation working at McAllister Towing. Jeff began his McAllister career in 1973 at the age of 18 when he worked as a deckhand on the fleet’s offshore crew boats. His rise at the company was attained the old-fashioned way by working his way up the hawse pipe.
SENESCO Marine Awarded New Contracts
Senesco Marine, headquartered in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, announced today that it has secured two new major repair contracts in what company officials describe as an important milestone to the shipyard’s recently established repair business. The two contracts include the University of Rhode Island’s research vessel the Endeavor and a tug owned by McAllister Towing. Crews at Senesco Marine are performing routine maintenance on the Endeavor, removing the tail shaft for inspection, replacing bearings and sea valves. They are also painting the underbody and hull. “Over the years when the Endeavor needed repair work I’ve had to go to various ports throughout the country,” said Bill Hahn, Marine Superintendent at URI School of Oceanography.
McAllister Aids Relief Effort
On the morning of September 11, as the second tower of the World Trade Center was hit by terrorists, McAllister Towing and Transportation Company's corporate headquarters, located by the Battery in lower Manhattan, was evacuated. All employees were evacuated safely, and the building went undamaged. McAllister's New York fleet was at work in the New York Harbor. When the port was closed, the fleet was dispatched to the Battery Park wall and helped other tugs take on board stranded, panicked pedestrians and ferry them to Weehawken, N.J., Brooklyn, upper Manhattan, and to Staten Island. The Hinton was the first McAllister tug on the scene. The Hinton thereafter has been working 19 hours daily as part of the relief effort. She has since been joined by the tugs, McAllister Bros.
McAllister Joins Marine Response Alliance
The directors of Marine Response Alliance LLC (MRA or Alliance) announced that McAllister Towing and Transportation Co., Inc. (McAllister) has joined the MRA as a full and equal member. McAllister is now united with the other MRA member companies—Crowley Marine Services, Inc. (Crowley), Marine Pollution Control Corporation (MPC), Titan Maritime LLC (Titan) and Marine Hazard Response (MHR) (a joint venture of Wild Well Control, Inc. and Williams Fire and Hazard Control, Inc.) to provide OPA-90 Salvage and Marine Firefighting services to the maritime community.

SUNY Maritime College announces three major gifts received as a result of two successful fundraising events – the 2006 Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner and the Class of 1956 Reunion Committee’s class gift campaign. Eastern Announces Delivery of Vicki M. McAllister
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc., has delivered the Vicki M. McAllister, the second of two 96 ft. reverse tractor tugs, which they have recently constructed for McAllister Towing and Transportation Company, Inc. The Vicki M. McAllister, slated for operations in the Philadelphia area, is a 5000 HP vessel measuring 96 ft. by 34 ft. by 14 ft. 9 in. tug. Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle, Wash., designed it, and built and classed by ABS A1 Towing-AMS. It is powered by two EMD 12-645-E7B engines and two Schottel Model SRP-1212FP Z drives producing up to 60 tons of bollard pull. NETEC hawser winches Model X2671 are mounted fore and aft holding 475 ft. of 10 in circumference line. Firefighting equipment consists of Detroit Diesel 8V-71TI diesel engine driving a Goulds 3410-8 in. by 10 in.

Edoc Systems Remains Healthy in Sour Economy

Joint Tortfeasor not Entitled to Contribution from U.S.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled that a joint tortfeasor is not entitled to contribution from the United States in a maritime personal injury suit brought by an employee of the United States. In the instant case, the federal employee was working on a government vessel engaged in towing an obsolete government vessel from one location to another. Two commercial companies were assisting in the effort. During the tow, a portion of the government vessel’s towing gear broke off and struck the federal employee. The United States government paid the employee the compensation provided for under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA).

Capt. Brian McAllister, a prominent member of the American maritime industry, will receive an honorary doctorate from SUNY Maritime College Jan. 27. Capt. Eastern Shipbuilding to Build 300 ft. Ferry
Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City, Fla., has announced the contract signing with the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, a subsidiary of McAllister Towing and Transportation Company, Inc., for the construction of the largest ferry vessel to be built for the East Coast in many years. The Ferry Company's latest ferry, designed by John W. Gilbert Associates, Inc., Boston, will operate between Bridgeport, Conn. and Port Jefferson, N.Y. The vessel will have a car and truck capacity of approximately 100 vehicles, and a passenger capacity of 1,000. The anticipated top speed of the ferry is 20 knots. The vessel will be powered with two EMD 16-645 E7B engines @ 90 rpm coupled to Reintjes gears. At 300 ft. overall length, with a 52 ft.
