Navelink is a newly formed sea traffic management industry consortium initiated by the industrial companies Kongsberg Gruppen, Saab and Wärtsilä, three influential and significant maritime equipment manufacturers and service providers.The aim of the consortium is to reach a new global standard enabling scalable maritime information exchange. The consortium already has the Swedish Maritime Authority (SMA) boarded and has commissioned Combitech to deliver the infrastructure needed."Ship owners and operators, as well as coastal and port authorities and their service providers can benefit from the open infrastructure we are establishing.

The Maritime Connectivity Platform Consortium has been established and a Platform launched last Friday during the conference e-Navigation Underway 2019.The Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP) is an open source technology a digital maritime domain. It brings common internet standards to maritime navigation and transportation systems.MCP enables infrastructures for efficient, secure, reliable and seamless electronic information exchange among maritime stakeholders using available communication systems. MCP is an open and vendor-neutral technology.The platform has been evolving for a number of years. The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) is hosting the final conference of the EU-funded digitalisation project EfficienSea2 on the 5th and 6th of April. 32 partners from 12 different countries have been collaborating in the European project EfficienSea2 since 2015 to create a more digital maritime world. The project has focused on developing new communication platforms, international IT-standards and digital services for the maritime world. The project supports the effort recently initiated by the Danish Government through a plan for maritime growth and a digital strategy. At the project’s final conference in Copenhagen on 5-6 April the solutions and communication platforms will be presented and demonstrated.

Maritime Connectivity Platform, or MCP, is the new name for what was previously known as the Maritime Cloud. The team behind the Maritime Cloud has decided to change the name of the communication framework. The new name, Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP), has been chosen to provide clarity and support e-Navigation going from testbed to real life implementation. “MCP is at a level of maturity where we are ready to take it from our project spheres into operational mode. However, before taking that step we felt a strong need to clarify exactly what is being offered and what is being offered is a connectivity platform – not a storage cloud,” he says.

Construction is complete on weighbridges at the port of Liverpool to help cargo owners comply with the new SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) international regulations on container weights. The multi-lane, in-process capability involved considerable work to install multiple dynamic axle weighbridges at the terminal AutoGates. Marine electronics group Navico, a literal ‘house of brands’ for the recreational, sail, power and commercial marine markets, is making a strong push in the commercial sector with its Simrad brand. The ascension of Navico in recreational marine electronics business – an estimated $1 billion market globally – was fast and furious, growing from roughly 7% of the global market in 2005 to nearly 30% in 2007, standing steady at about 35% today, fueled by a strategy built on the acquisition of strong brands mixed with organic growth.

The right product for the right application is a familiar claim from marine equipment supplier Simrad, but, when compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements is at stake, it is a call demanding an immediate response. Compliance with the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention on Electronic Chart Data and Information Systems (ECDIS) is now a matter of urgency. The mandatory phase-in for all internationally trading vessels to be fitted with an ECDIS using Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) reached a watershed on July 1, 2015.

Marine electronics group Navico is aiming for a top three position in the commercial maritime sector within 3-5 years. Navico is a strong player in the recreational boating sector, claiming a 32% market share and well versed in investing in growth both organically and through acquisition, including a commitment to product development. Its ambitions in a crowded commercial sector will have to be backed by a continuation of this successful formula.

Statoil selected Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) to deploy and operate its high speed 4G-network on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). It’s a six-year contract with a four-year option, which calls for MCP to build what is essentially the world’s largest 4G network at sea. Initially 15 rigs, two light well intervention vessels (LWI), two subsea inspection and maintenance vessels (IMR) and 50 supply ships will be covered. The agreement includes existing and new oilfields operated by Statoil.

Statoil has chosen Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) to deploy and operate its high speed 4G-network on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Statoil and MCP have signed a six-year contract with an option to extend for another four years. With that, MCP will immediately start building the world’s largest 4G network at sea. Statoil will benefit from high-speed mobile coverage on all of its 34 platforms on the NCS. This will improve communications between platforms, rigs and supply-vessels.

MCP has signed a long-term contract with Carnival Corporation to provide 33 cruise ships with advanced mobile cellular communication services. The agreement provides close to 130,000 people each day mobile voice, texting (SMS) and data (mobile internet) coverage while at sea. In order to deliver mobile solutions to crew and passengers, Carnival Corporation has signed a multi-year contract serving six of the company’s nine brands. The agreement is a consolidation and extension of existing agreements and the addition of new ships.

MCP’s Board of Directors appointed Frode Støldal as new CEO for the Telenor subsidiary. Støldal replaces MCPs founder, Knut Fjellheim, who has served as interim-CEO and now returns to his previous role as COO/CTO. Frode Støldal has vast management experience from across the Telenor-Group. Prior to his role as CTO in Telenor Norway where he was responsible for deploying a new LTE (4G) network, Støldal served as Head of Technology for Telenor in Asia, responsible for industrialization and common technology projects across Telenor Group.

Corsica Ferries is first to tap into MCPs new entertainment and information platform for the ferry and cruise industry. Following a successful pilot, five vessels in the Mediterranean Ocean will be equipped with Value Adding Voyage Experience platform (VAVE) this summer. Brazilian superyacht builder MCP Yachts credited Seatorque Control Systems for contributing to the outstanding performance of its latest launch – the Hemisphere 140 Raffaella II. Incorporating Seatorque’s enclosed drive shaft system, the 43m aluminum vessel, powered by twin Caterpillar C32 1825 HP engines, achieved a top cruising speed of 22 knots during sea trials with an 85% load and 167 metric tons displacement, said MCP president Manoel Chaves. The vessel features a pair M3-400 single-piece Seatorque shaft systems, each 22 ft. long, accommodating the vessel’s four-inch diameter shafts.

Maritime Communication Partner (MCP) has been contracted by DeepOcean to provide state-of-the-art online and mobile communications for a Kleven newbuild MT6022 offshore vessel which will provide Inspection, Maintenance and Repair (IMR) services for all Statoil operated fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). This five-year IMR agreement, say MCP, commencing in Q1 2014, is worth more than NOK 1.5billion (USD 253million). MCP’s role will be to keep DeepOcean and Statoil connected.

Maritime Communication Partner (MCP), a global provider of onboard communications solutions, has announced the recruitment of two highly experienced senior executives to lead its dedicated Offshore and Cruise and Ferry Business Units. Tom Lowehr, until recently the Head of Program Management at Astrium Business Communication, has joined as Senior Vice President (SVP) of the newly launched Offshore business unit, while Lars Munkso, formerly of US stock-listed energy services group Cameron, becomes SVP of the Cruise and Ferry business unit.

Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) was chosen by Princess Cruises to outfit the Sun Princess with on-board 3G wireless communication services. MCP, a global onboard communications partner, announced that the Princess Cruises ship - Sun Princess - is the second cruise ship in the world to offer their passengers 3G mobile communication services at sea. The California based cruise operator launched 3G on their vessel the Sun Princess at the end of May this year. This new service has provided the ships passengers and crew with MCP’s latest mobile communication technology to access data services and improve the user-experience on board.

The European Port Community Systems Association (EPCSA) is determined to keep its focus on the important issues and maintain close contact with officers and decision-makers in the European Commission, according to the association’s new chairman and vice-chairman. Alan Long, managing director of Felixstowe-based Maritime Cargo Processing (MCP), has been appointed chairman of EPCSA, and Piet Jan ten Thije, strategy and business director of Rotterdam-based Portbase, is the new vice chairman of the association.
