Mass. Maritime Academy Offering Offshore Wind Training to Locals

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) said it has started offering its Global Wind Organization Basic Technical Training (GWO BTT) course to community members, opening the door to those on Martha’s Vineyard interested in a potential career in the offshore wind industry.Massachusetts Maritime Academy is one of the first institutions in the Northeast to offer this type of training. The goal is to help broaden the landscape of local job opportunities in the fast-emerging offshore

Future USS Carl Levin Completes Acceptance Trials

The future USS Carl M. Levin (DDG 120) completed acceptance trials on December 9, returning to General Dynamics Corp’s Bath Iron Works (BIW) Bath shipyard after spending two days at sea.During acceptance trials, the ship and its crew performed a series of demonstrations for review by the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). These demonstrations are used by INSURV to validate the quality of construction and compliance with Navy specifications and requirements prior to delivery of the ship to the U.S. Navy.

Bollinger Wins $33.7 Million Navy Contract

Louisiana shipbuilder Bollinger Shipyards has been awarded a contract to build the multi-mission dry dock caissons at the U.S. Navy's Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Maine, the U.S. Department of Defense said on Monday.Under the $33,704,757 firm-fixed-price contract, Bollinger will provide two graving dock caissons at PNSY for Dry Dock #1N and Dry Dock #1W. Caisson construction includes steel fabrication, installation of mechanical and electrical systems, and a full testing

The ship is owned by the Office of Naval Research and has been operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego since 1996. The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) completed her necessary repairs and extensive, accelerated upgrades over the last two years, following a fatal 2017 collision.The ship and her crew, now underway to conduct comprehensive at sea testing, will perform a series of demonstrations to evaluate onboard systems to ensure they meet or exceed Navy performance specifications. Fincantieri to Adapt FREMM Frigate for US Navy

Shipbuilder Fincantieri Marine Group has announced further details on its plans to adapt its FREMM frigate, already in service for the Italian Navy since 2012, to design the U.S. Navy’s new guided-missile frigate, FFG(X). Fincantieri said it will lead an industry team, including Gibbs & Cox and Trident Maritime Systems, to design and build the ships at its U.S. shipyards, including Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) in Marinette, Wisc. USS Rafael Peralta Completes Acceptance Trials

The future USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) successfully completed acceptance trials Dec. 16 after spending two days underway off the coast of Maine. The U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) reviewed the ship and its crew during a series of demonstrations while underway. INSURV evaluates the ship's construction and compliance with Navy specifications and is the governing body that recommends the ship be delivered to the Navy. The trials were conducted both pier-side and underway. Many of the ship's onboard systems tested to validate performance, including navigation, damage control, mechanical and electrical systems, combat systems, communications, and propulsion applications, met or exceeded Navy specifications.

MMO Market Falls 22% in 2015

The Offshore Maintenance, Modifications & Operations (MMO) market experienced a substantial fall of 22% in total expenditure between 2014 and 2015, and an additional 5% decline is projected by the end of 2016, says a Douglas-Westwood report. This is a result of the postponement of non-critical work which otherwise would have been sanctioned in a $100 oil period. However, whilst efforts to reduce bottom line figures have paid off and continue to be in play, E&P operators must acknowledge the inevitable threshold levels of MMO that are required in the prevention of lost-time incidents. Therefore, DW anticipates a recovery in MMO expenditure to 2021 as Operators address maintenance backlogs that can no longer be postponed.

TCS Charters CWind Crew Transfer Vessel

Transmission Capital Services (TCS) has chartered one of CWind’s crew transfer vessels (CTV) on a five-year contract to support works at several of their offshore substations in the U.K. CWind, a provider of services to the offshore wind industry, said it is using one of its MPC19 resin infused composite catamarans to provide the crew transfer services. CWind announced in February this year that it had won a 20-year contract from TC Westermost Rough OFTO Limited, one of the OFTOs managed by TCS, to maintain the secondary mechanical and electrical systems of both the offshore and onshore substations at the Westermost Rough project. The earlier contract covered all routine inspection, diagnostics and planned maintenance work, as well as a first response service and offshore transport.

The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the lead ship of the Navy's next-generation of multimission surface combatants, May 20. DDG 1000 is tailored for sustained operations in the littorals and land attack, and will provide independent forward presence and deterrence, support special operations forces, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces. CWind Wins Westermost Rough Jobs

TC Westermost Rough OFTO Limited has appointed offshore renewables specialist CWind to maintain on- and offshore assets at Westermost Rough offshore wind farm. CWind, a provider of services to the offshore wind industry, has announced today, that it has won a contract to provide mechanical and electrical services to the offshore and onshore substations at Westermost Rough offshore wind farm. Timed to coincide with the handover of the OFTO assets to TC Westermost Rough OFTO Limited, the company has signed up CWind to maintain the mechanical and electrical systems of both the offshore and onshore substations as well as the routine inspections of the onshore cables for the 205 MW project 8km off the Holderness coast.

Vice Adm. William Hilarides, the commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), recently spoke to a small group of reporters about his vision for NAVSEA and the challenges and opportunities he faces. A decline in the number of skilled Sailors able to conduct repairs onboard their ships; an aging civilian workforce; balancing capability with affordability and achieving commonality are priority issues for Hilarides and his staff. To reduce the total lifecycle cost of its ships, the Navy eliminated some sea duty positions for Sailors on ships in the late 1990s.

USNS John Glenn Completes Final Contract Trials

USNS John Glenn (MLP 2), successfully completed Final Contract Trials (FCT) off the coast of Manchester, Washington July 31. During the trials, the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey along with the ship's crew tested the vessel's various hull, mechanical, and electrical systems to demonstrate that the ship meets Navy standards and requirements, and is materially ready to perform all of its slated in-service missions. John Glenn, the second of the Navy's Mobile Landing Platforms (MLP), was constructed by General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO). Since delivering to the Navy from NASSCO in March, her crew has moved onboard and begun training on the ship's systems in preparation for these trials.

Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The contract provides funding for steam and electrical-plant components, main propulsion unit and ship-service turbine generator sets, as well as miscellaneous hull, mechanical and electrical-systems components to support construction of the submarines. With the modification, the contract has a value of $716.5 million. It was awarded initially in April 2012. Recognized as a model defense-acquisition program for its technical excellence and schedule performance

Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. Recognized as a model defense-acquisition program for its technical excellence and schedule performance, the Virginia-class submarine program provides the Navy with the capabilities required to dominate both the open ocean and the littorals.
