Interview: John Batten, CEO, Twin Disc

How have major events such as the U.S./China trade war, oil price fall and COVID-19 impacted Twin Disc’s commercial marine business to date, and what adjustments have you made in response?These are the three things that I’ve been highlighting in employee communications and with investors over the last few months. For us, COVID was just the third punch after the other two. China is typically our second largest market after the U.S., and we lost lots of orders to our competitors as the trade war started to affect us. It’s rebounding a little, but it definitely impacted our sales into China.

While merriam-webster.com is succinct in its definition of ‘autonomous’, ask 10 people in the maritime sector what ‘autonomous’ vessel means to them and the responses vary widely. Achieving autonomous, unmanned operations is not high, today, on the agenda of many (if any) shipowners. What does command their attention? Building ships that are increasingly ‘smart,’ with integrated, connected systems that take on additional decision-making processes while helping to reduce crew size (and cost)…

"Walking" Offshore Platform Wins Innovation Award

The innovative walking jack-up platform WaveWalker 1 was presented with the Product and Equipment Innovation Award at the prestigious Ground Engineering (GE) Awards ceremony in London earlier this week. WaveWalker 1, developed by Fugro and Van Oord, is an innovative, eight-legged 'walking' jack-up barge (self-elevating work platform - SEWP) designed especially for marine operations in rough seas, surf zones, beaches and other intertidal locations where operation of traditional SEWPs is uneconomic.

Fugro Seacore recently collected the New Mechanical Product of the Year award for the WaveWalker 1 walking jack-up at this year’s British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEAs). WaveWalker is an eight-legged walking jack-up barge (self-elevating work platform - SEWP) which was designed especially for marine operations in rough seas, surf zones, beaches and other intertidal locations where operation of traditional SEWPs is uneconomic. As well as operating safely whilst elevated, its bidirectional movement allows it to move and relocate without floating.

Cummins IMO Tier II Mechanical Product Offering

Ahead of IMO Tier II implementation in January 2011, Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced their complete IMO Tier II product offering which will includes products with both mechanically and electronically controlled fuel systems to meet a variety of customer needs. II emissions standards. In anticipation of customer requests for mechanical engines meeting next-level global emissions regulations, the company has also begun developing Tier II ratings for their K Series product line. The 19, 38 and 50 liter engines feature the proven Cummins PT fuel system, making them some of the few high horsepower Tier II certified engines with a mechanically controlled fuel system. The Tier II certified K Series fills a gap in the market for durable, reliable power without complex electronic controls.

Cummins Expands IMO Tier II Product Line

In anticipation of customer requests for mechanical engines meeting stringent next-level global emissions regulations, Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has received a statement of compliance from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certifying the KTA19-D(M1) to IMO Tier II emissions standards. The 19-liter, in-line six cylinder auxiliary engine features the proven Cummins PT fuel system making it one of the few high horsepower Tier II certified engines with a mechanically controlled fuel system. The KTA19-D(M1) fills a gap in the market for durable, reliable power without complex electronic controls. While major hardware remains unchanged from the current 19-liter mechanical product, timing adjustments allow for emissions reductions without significantly impacting fuel consumption.
