A Tale of Two Tanker Classes

In a stark reminder of how volatile shipping markets can be, sentiment in the previously weak Asian Aframax market has flipped while the LR2 market continues its downward slide. The Aframax market in the East of Suez firmed rapidly with rates for the Indo/Japan route up by w22.5 points w-o-w to w132.5 due to a flurry of pre- Lunar New Year activity. Among fixtures heard, BP placed a vessel on subjects for an Indo-Aus voyage at w132.5 basis 80,000 mt. Rates for the AG/East route gained by w5 points from the previous week to w115.

30 Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle Carriers for APM Terminals Tangier

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract with APM Terminals to deliver 30 Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle Carriers with high level of automation readiness as well as the related service and support to the customer's MedPort Terminal in Tangier, Marocco. The order was booked into Cargotec's 2016 fourth quarter order intake and the delivery is estimated to be completed by the end of 2018. This is Kalmar's biggest single order for horizontal transportation to date. The Tangier-Med 2 port is a greenfield transshipment terminal that is scheduled to be opened in 2019.

Russian Frigate Heads to Med on Syria Mission

The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich left the port of Sevastopol in Crimea on Monday for the Mediterranean where it will join the country's naval forces deployed near the Syrian coast, a Russian source told Reuters. The source did not provide further details. A Reuters witness saw the ship leaving its moorings in the naval port of Sevastopol. The frigate was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea last November as part of Russia's naval task force to Syria where it launched cruise missile strikes against Islamic State targets. The Russian navy was not immediately available for comment.

A New Tug Class for Med Marine

Construction will soon commence on the first of a newly designed variant of the RAmparts series of tugs from Robert Allan Ltd., the RAmparts 2300-MM, developed exclusively for Med Marine to be built at its shipyard in Turkey. The new tug will be the first of six vessels expected to be completed within the next 2-3 years, with the leading vessel expected for delivery in late 2017. The signing ceremony for the new contract took place on February 9 at the Med Marine Head Office in Istanbul, Turkey. This venture reflects a longstanding cooperation between Med Marine and Robert Allan Ltd.

Nearly 9,000 Med Migrants Rescued over Weekend

Nearly 9,000 mainly African migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean this past long weekend after being put by smugglers in Libya onto unseaworthy boats heading toward Italy, U.N. aid agencies said on Tuesday. The migrants, many from Nigeria and Senegal with some from Bangladesh, are among an estimated 20,000 held by criminal gangs in irregular detention centres in Libya, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said. On release, they pay to board the overcrowded boats, often just inflated rubber vessels that could not cross the Mediterranean, in the hope of starting a new life in Europe. "It is obvious that better spring weather has encouraged smugglers to take people from their detention centres," IOM spokesman Leonard Doyle told a news briefing in Geneva.

Med Diesel Diffs at 21-month High

A closed arbitrage from other regions and refinery shutdowns have tightened the Mediterranean diesel market driving cargo premiums to ICE gasoil futures to their highest since August 2015. "It's almost impossible to find cargoes for the first half of May in the Mediterranean," one trader active in the region said. CMA CGM Launches Direct Service to Black Sea

In line with its strategy for the development of short lines in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, the CMA CGM Group has rolled out the Black Sea Med Express service, which connects the major countries around the Black Sea (Turkey, Romania and Ukraine) to Algeria and Morocco. The service will be CMA CGM's first to offer a weekly connection between the main ports of the Black Sea and Aegean Sea with the North of Morocco (Tangier and Casablanca) and Algeria (Annaba) in order to develop the activity between The Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea with short lines.

MTU 4000 Engines to Power Harbor Tugs

Rolls-Royce and Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey have signed a contract for the delivery of eight MTU Series 4000 engines for four new terminal tugs, including an option for a further four engines. The tugs will each be fitted with two 16V 4000 M73L MTU engines, each delivering an output of 2,700 kW (at 1,850 rpm). The MTU brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. European Gasoline Margins at 4-1/2 Month High

Benchmark European gasoline refining margins spiked nearly 9 percent on Tuesday to their highest since April after more than 2 million barrels per day (bpd) of U.S. refining capacity was knocked offline by Hurricane Harvey. Margins, a measure of the profit that can be made from refining crude into gasoline, hit $15.45 a barrel in morning trade. Harvey knocked out 13 percent of refining capacity in the United States, the world's largest oil consumer, while the ongoing rain and flooding threatened other units, including the country's largest refinery.

Interferry Conference Reviews Issues with Financial Impact

The challenges and opportunities posed by alternative fuels, safety management and social media dominated Interferry’s 42nd annual conference in Split, Croatia, where a record 370 delegates shared insights on ship technologies, safety issues including cyber security and the customer experience. Attendance at last week’s conference represented 210 ferry operators and suppliers from 27 countries. Mediterranean ferry operators voiced their concerns on meeting the 0.5 percent sulphur emissions cap due in 2020. Minoan Lines managing director Antonios Maniadakis complained that using low sulphur fuel would increase costs by €2 million per year.

In October the world’s ferry operators gathered in Split Croatia for the Forty Second Annual Interferry Conference. The 470 or so delegates represented 210 operators and support companies from 27 countries. A trade show included firms from around the world including shipbuilders, naval architects, equipment suppliers, training and others of the diverse group that make up the ferry industry. In a panel on Mediterranean Ferries, Philippe Holthof, of the Belgian-based Shipax explained the huge size and complexity of the fleet.

French SMART PORT in Med Soon

The members of the SMART PORT steering committee adopted a first series of projects designed to take advantage of the digital transition with a view to affirming and consolidating the importance of the Aix-Marseille Provence Metropolis as a seaport. The steering committee also supported the creation of a program focusing on research and innovation: the Brain Port Community. This partnership will be based on a multi-party agreement between Aix-Marseille Université, the Port of Marseille Fos, the CCIMP, Métropole Aix-Marseille, and the PACA region.

MedPort Tangier Cranes to Reach APM Soon

The first group of three, of a total of 12 advanced remotecontrolled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, has departed China for delivery on February 15 to the new APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, Morocco terminal. Italy Seizes Ship that Picked up Migrants in Mediterranean

Italian authorities seized a charity’s ship on suspicion it had helped illegal immigration by picking up migrants in the Mediterranean instead of letting Libya’s coastguard take them back to North Africa, the aid group said. The Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms picked up 218 migrants who were in unsafe rubber boats in international waters off Libya’s coast on Thursday, then took them to Sicily, the Italian coastguard said. A Sicilian court impounded the boat late on Sunday on suspicion that members of its crew had violated international agreements on handling migrants and helped illegal migration into Europe, the charity said. There was no immediate comment from the court in Catania.
