Freezing Med Attracts Unusual Diesel Cargoes

Tankers diverted in mid-Atlantic to Med; in rare arbitrage, cargoes from Europe into Med. At least one tanker carrying diesel en route to New York has been diverted in the mid-Atlantic to the Mediterranean, where freezing weather from North Africa to the Balkans has boosted demand for heating oil and sharply lifted prices. At the same time, two 30,000-tonne tankers - the Torm Gyda and Nord Bell - have been booked by Glencore to go from northwest Europe to the Mediterranean, according to shipping data and traders.

TOP Tankers Announces the Sale of Single Hull Vessel

TOP Tankers Inc announced today the sale of M/T Med Prologue, a 29,990 dwt, single-hull handysize tanker built in 1985, to an unrelated party. The sale will result in a book profit of approximately $0.4 million, which will be recognized in the 4th quarter of 2004. The vessel is expected to be delivered to its new owners by December 31, 2004. Evangelos J. Pistiolis, President and Chief Executive Officer of TOP Tankers Inc, commented, "The sale of M/T Med Prologue is consistent with our Company's policy of operating a high quality, double-hull fleet. Following the sale of the vessel and the delivery of our 5 newly acquired Suezmax tankers, 98.4 percent of our tonnage will be double-hull."

Repairs Complete on Damaged Akaylar II

The Turkey-flag container ship Akaylar II has left Desan Shipyard, Tuzla, Turkey, after repairs were completed on the collision damaged vessel, Reuters reported. Akaylar II was towed to Tuzla from Buyukdere, where it had initially been towed following a collision around the entrance to the Bosphorus straits. The 4,263-dwt Akaylar II was leaving the straits for the Black Sea when it was involved in a collision with the southbound 8,971-dwt Cambodia-flag Med Glory, which was badly damaged. The Med Glory carrying 7,500 tons of urea, was refloated from a beach close to the scene on February 16, and was anchored nearby awaiting the outcome of discussions between vessel and cargo owners.

Containership Collide

Two containerships collided on Thursday near the northern entrance to Turkey's Bosphorus straits, forcing the crew of one to abandon its vessel. It said the 2,258-gt Turkish-flagged Akaylar-2, exiting the straits into the Black Sea, was involved in a collision with the southbound 8,971-dwt Cambodian-registered Med Glory, which was badly damaged. Turkish television showed pictures of Med Glory listing, with water almost up to its deck at the stern. - (Reuters)

CMA CGM Improves NC Levant Service

CMA CGM has announced the new upgraded service offer NC LEVANT, which directly links the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon) and Northern Europe (Belgium, England, Germany), via Malta, Spain and Italy. A New Tug Class for Med Marine

Construction will soon commence on the first of a newly designed variant of the RAmparts series of tugs from Robert Allan Ltd., the RAmparts 2300-MM, developed exclusively for Med Marine to be built at its shipyard in Turkey. The new tug will be the first of six vessels expected to be completed within the next 2-3 years, with the leading vessel expected for delivery in late 2017. The signing ceremony for the new contract took place on February 9 at the Med Marine Head Office in Istanbul, Turkey. This venture reflects a longstanding cooperation between Med Marine and Robert Allan Ltd.

CMA CGM Launches New WEMED Service

CMA CGM strengthens its historical presence on the Mediterranean market by connecting France, Spain, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Malta and Algeria direct. CMA CGM offers a direct connection between East Med and West Med. CMA CGM has announced the launch of the first Group’s service dedicated to intra Mediterranean trades. The WEMED service (West Med – East Med) was launched on March 11th 2016 and offers the Group’s clients direct transport solutions to Eastern Mediterranean countries (France, Spain, Algeria) and Western Mediterranean countries (Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt).

Morocco to Get First Automated Container Terminal

Port operator APM Terminals to develop a new transshipment terminal in Tangier, Morocco with an annual capacity of five million TEUs. APM Terminals MedPort Tangier will become operational in 2019, serving multiple trades and will be the first automated terminal in Africa. The 30-year concession of APM Terminals MedPort Tangier will complement the current operations of the existing APM Terminals Tangier facility. APM Terminals has been named as the operator of a new container transshipment terminal at the Tanger Med 2 port complex.

The decision of the EU Council to launch EUNAVFOR Med* was today strongly welcomed by BIMCO, following the association’s statement on 24 April calling for an extension of Operation Triton’s geographical reach. BIMCO’s April statement highlighted the risks to the health, safety and security of seafarers who assist distressed migrants in increasingly large numbers – and that merchant shipping is not equipped to handle the humanitarian crisis at sea caused by the levels of migration in the Mediterranean.

Rutter Receives Wheelmark for VDR

Rutter Technologies Inc. has received authority to affix the Mark of Conformity (wheelmark) that is granted by the EU to its voyage data recorders (VDRs). The wheelmark signifies that the Rutter VDR-100 is compliant with the EU Council Directive 96/98/EC on marine equipment, also known as the Marine Equipment Directive (MED). Now that the first date for mandatory carriage has passed (July 1st, 2002), the VDR has moved from Annex 2 to Annex 1 of the MED and the wheelmark will be required to sell VDRs. UASC and CSCL Increasing Asia-Med Service

UASC and CSCL upgrade deployment on joint Asia to Med Service. United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and  CSCL will as a result of the change in deployment in Asia to North Europe, redeploy tonnage into their existing joint Asia to MED service (AMC1/AMX1) through deployment of a combination of 10 x 7,000 to 8,000 Teu vessel (CSCL 3 x 8,500/UASC 7 x 7,000) bringing the deployment on this service to 10 from the present 9 vessels. Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Port Kelang, Port Said, La Spezia, Genoa, Fos, Barcelona, Valencia, Port Said, Jeddah, Khor Fakkan, Port Kelang, Quingdao. The new deployment will commence from the 2nd half of February 2012.

CMA CGM announces the reshuffling of its Asia-West Med Services. CMA CGM announces the reshuffling of its services on the Asia-West Mediterranean trade in partnership with Maersk Line (ML). Rotation: Qingdao > Pusan > Shanghai > Ningbo > Yantian > Chiwan > Nansha > Tanjung Pelepas > Port Kelang > Malta > Valencia > Barcelona > Fos > Genoa > Malta > Port Said > Khorfakkan > Port Kelang > Singapore > Qingdao. Rotation: Xiamen > Shanghai > Ningbo > Yantian  > Nansha > Tanjung Pelepas > Port Kelang > Beirut > Malta > Valencia > Malaga > Tangiers > Port Said > Port Kelang > Singapore. These two new services will replace the MEX service currently operated by CMA CGM as well as the MEX2 (AE11) and the AE20 services operated by Maersk Line on the Asia-West Med Trade.

CMA CGM PC South Service: New Call in Takoradi

CMA CGM said it will introduce a new call in Takoradi (Ghana) on its PC South service designed to connect Libreville and Port Gentil ports in Gabon and Takoradi in Ghana to Europe, the Mediterranean, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East and North America via Tanger Med terminal. Pointe Noire call in Republic of Congo will serve the domestic market but will also serve as a hub for cargo from Asia to Takoradi. PC South new rotation will be effective January 4th, 2014, from Takoradi with MV PLUTO, voyage 4W061S.

“Intra-Mediterranean Container Trades” Update

Dynamar has published “INTRA-MEDITERRANEAN CONTAINER TRADES”, the latest report in its Container Trades and Markets series. Salient details and interesting findings of the new report are discussed here below. Intra-Mediterranean (2014) Container Trades is all about the 170 services operated by 40 different shipping companies deploying 275 container, Ro/Ro and multipurpose ships with container capacities of 400 to 3,000 TEU that populate the intra and coastal all Mediterranean waters.

One of the largest sailing ships in the world, the 636-foot-long Club Med 2 is a huge five-masted cruise ship owned and operated by Club Med. The impressively massive vessel recently called the port of Chios Island Greece, where Konstantinos Mil. Anagnostou was able to capture stunning aerial photos and video. Watch here. Built from 1992 to 1996 in Le Havre, France, Club Med 2 harnesses power from computer-operated sails combined with diesel-electric power. Seven sails and four diesel generators powering two electric motors propel the ship to speeds of 10-15 knots.

Zim Improves Asia-Mediterranean Loops

The Israeli ocean carrier Zim Integrated Shipping Services is upgrading its Asia-Mediterranean service network, comprising the East Med-Black Sea Express, or EMX, and the Asia-India Subcontinent East Med, or AME, by adding new port calls and upsizing tonnage deployment. The upgraded its Asia-Med Services  due to commence in mid-October 2015. The improved rotation will include extended port coverage, two weekly calls in Haifa and Ashdod and other improvements suited to the needs of the Asia-Med market.

Big Growth in Mediterranean Transhipment Business Observed

Virtually all large Mediterranean transhipment hub ports recorded double digit growth in 2013, well above regional and global growth levels, notes the latest edition of Drewry's Container Insight Weekly. Once all full year data is collated, global container port traffic is likely to have grown by around 3.3% whilst that for the regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea will probably have grown by between 3 and 6%. Scan Med to Call Piraeus

Maersk Line announced a new direct service between North Europe and Piraeus (Greece). The company will include Piraeus in its Scan Med service. The new rotation will be Gothenburg (Sweden), Bremerhaven (Germany), Felixstowe (United Kingdom), Antwerp (Belgium), Piraeus (Greece), Haydarpasa (Turkey), Ambarli (Turkey), Izmir (Turkey), Gioia Tauro (Italy), Felixstowe (United Kingdom), and Gothenburg (Sweden). The first vessel to enter the new rotation is Maersk Barcelona, departing Gothenburg 23 June 2007 and arriving in Piraeus on 3 July 2007.

Another AHTS for Med Offshore

Med Offshore ordered an AHTS 6615 of the Damen Offshore series. This is the second time Med Offshore orders an anchor handling tug supply vessel from Damen, following the AHTS 6114, Med Otto, which was elivered to Med Offshore in September 2006. Med Offshore, the Italian shipping company owned by the Garolla Family, operates a fleet of supply boats and anchor handlers while the holding company Sarda Bunkers operates a fleet of tankers for the transportation of bunkers and oil products. The newly ordered vessel will form part of the fleet renewal program which started with the acquisition of the AHTS 6114, Med Otto. It is designed and equipped for worldwide services. The AHTS 6615 is one of the latest designs from the Damen Offshore Series.

THE Alliance Sets Out Service Plans

The withdrawal of Hanjin tonnage has not been enough to rectify the trade’s supply-demand imbalance and headhaul ship utilisation is lower compared to other major East-West markets. Westbound volumes rose by 1.8% in the third quarter and the growth rate for the year to date is now registering 2.9% (see Figure 1). Asian exports shipped to the West Mediterranean (including North Africa) grew by 2.8% between July and September, while traffic to the eastern sector of the trade only expanded by 0.8%.

Martek Awarded Wheelmark Approval

Martek Marine were awarded the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) ‘wheelmark’ approval for their range of fixed gas detection systems. The systems can be used on any type of vessel where there is a potential danger of a fugitive gas leak. The systems are most commonly used on LNG and LPG carriers as well as all types of tankship, from bunkerbarges to ULCC’s. The MM6000, is the only intrinsically safe infra-red gas detector in the world approved for use in gas dangerous spaces on LNG carriers. MM2000 combined with MM1200 & MM1000 gas detectors is the only addressable gas detection control system on the market to carry MED certification.
