Divers Search for Bodies in CA Boat Fire

Divers searched for more bodies early on Tuesday around the wreck of a boat destroyed by a blaze off the coast of southern California, as authorities launched an investigation into one of the area's worst maritime disasters.Emergency crews found at least 25 bodies after the fire broke out before dawn on Monday, leaving nine people still missing, the Associated Press reported. 8 Dead, 26 Missing After Dive Boat Fire

Eight people were confirmed dead from a predawn fire that sank a boat off a Southern California island and 26 others who were on the scuba diving vessel were missing, a local sheriff said.The fire broke out aboard the Conception, a 75-foot (23-metre) boat, at about 3:15 a.m. while it was moored just off the shore of Santa Cruz Island, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.Passengers slept in the ship's lower quarters, officials said, while five crew members who were above deck on the bridge escaped.The Coast Guard searched the coastline of Santa Cruz Island for any other possible survivors but had not found anyone, officials said."This isn't a day that we wanted to wake up to for Labor Day and it's a very tragic event…

Feds Approve CA Sewage Ban and No-Discharge Zone

Feds Approve California Sewage Ban and Create Largest Coastal No-Discharge Zone in the Nation. Federal action is unprecedented in geographical scope, will prohibit the discharge of more than 22 million gallons of treated vessel sewage to shorelines and shallow waters in Calif. each year. U.S. EPA’s Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld will today sign a rule that will finalize EPA’s decision and approve a state proposal to ban all sewage discharges from large cruise ships and most other large ocean-going ships to state marine waters along California’s 1,624 mile coast from Mexico to Oregon and surrounding major islands. Today’s action establishes a new federal regulation banning even treated sewage from being discharged in California’s marine waters.

New Navy Contracts

DRS C3 System, Inc., Stevensville, Md., is being awarded a $7,935,427 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research and development activities associated with integrated power system (IPS) advanced modules and IPS ship design tools. This effort supports the research and development of various alternative technologies associated with advanced power systems and development of ship design tools that support the design development of advanced IPS ship concepts and that quantifies technical risks associated with the integrated technology. DRS C3 System, Inc will develop an advanced hydrodynamics simulation tool and related ship design software and an advanced design, modeling & simulation tool for capability-based ship design that includes IPS technology.

Mass. Maritime Academy, $1.5m for Stadium

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy has received a pledge from Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. of Norwell, Mass. in the amount of $1.5m for naming rights to its contiguous athletic stadium and gymnasium complex. The acceptance of the pledge, which was presented by Clean Harbors Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alan S. McKim, was approved unanimously earlier this morning by the school's Board of Trustees and announced by Admiral Richard G. Gurnon, President of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Clean Harbors Athletic Center will be comprised of the athletic stadium, which is the current home of Commander Edward A. Ellis Field, as well as all athletic and recreation facilities currently housed in Alumni Gymnasium.

Lockheed Martin Opens LCS Concept and Development Center

Lockheed Martin is opening a multi-media Concept and Development Center in Washington, DC, to showcase its Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) project and team attributes for this transformational U.S. Navy program. The Center will be used to visualize the warship's features, mission capabilities, and later this year, as a hub for LCS demonstrations and evaluations. "The Concept and Development Center brings our proposed LCS system solution to life," said Carol Hulgus, vice president, programs for Lockheed Martin's Maritime Systems & Sensors business. "While proposals may contain all the necessary information about a program, this multi-media center allows us to further refine the design with our public and private sector partners.

MV Alucia Reconstructed for New Use

The MV Alucia has undergone reconstruction and retrofit for future use as a research and upscale adventure vessel. Alucia was built at the Auroux Shipyard in southern France as a heavy lift ship and launch/recovery platform for diving and submersible operations. She functioned as principle support ship and launch recovery platform for the Nautalie from 1984-2004, one of the world’s only submersibles capable of diving 6,000 meters (19,690 feet). Acquired in June 2004 by DeepOcean Quest Expeditions, the MV Alucia (183 ft) has undergone a major retrofit and completed the requirements for a 5-year Bureau Veritas Certification survey.
