The first vessel has successfully docked at Tema Port’s new MPS Terminal 3, Ghana, said a statement from APM Terminals.The container vessel will be used for training purposes over the coming weeks, to ensure that the terminal runs smoothly from day one, when operations begin later this month on June 28.Chartering the test vessel will cost around 250,000 Dollars. Maersk Group says it is committed to a long-term partnership with Ghana, and will boost its investments in the country. Accroding to local media report, the Maersk Group Chief Executive Officer, Nils S. Andersen, revealed that Maersk is interested in playing an active role in Ghana’s growth through investments in trade, infrastructure and energy. “Together with our partners, we have committed $1.5billion to the expansion of the port in Tema which would create probably the largest and most modern terminal in sub Saharan Africa. This will enable Ghana’s trade for the coming decades, and support more efficient flows of exports as well as imports” Andersen said. Nils S.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has received 1.5 billion dollars for the expansion of the Tema Port. The authority today signed a 35-year Concessionary Agreement with the Meridian Port Services (MPS) to boost expansion activities at the port. The Minister for Transport, Dzifa Attivor who witnessed the signing in Accra said the project will enhance the efficiency of the Port and make it more competitive. The expansion project which is scheduled to be completed in three years includes plans for the potential construction of additional terminal facilities, including bulk, liquid bulk and general cargo terminals, as global trade with Africa continue to accelerate.

Maersk Group is committed to support the expansion of the Port of Tema to the tune of US $1.5 billion, says Nils Smedegaard Andersen, Chief Executive Officer of Maersk Group. Maersk will also contribute its quota in the US$6 billion oil exploration work to be undertaken by Italian firm Eni Exploration in Ghana. Port operator APM Terminals, a unit of shipping and oil conglomerate A.P. Moller-Maersk , said on Thursday it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Ghana to expand its Tema Port. APM Terminals said the agreement included a "private investment" in excess of $1 billion by Meridian Port Services of which APM Terminals controls 35 percent. "Both in the short- and long-term view we see Ghana as a country with great potential," Peder Søndergaard head of Africa and Middle East activities in APM Terminals told Reuters. Meridian Port Services (MPS) is a joint venture between APM Terminals, Bolloré Africa Logistics and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
