New SAR Vessel Enters Service for the Canadian Coast Guard

The Canadian Coast Guard's newest search and rescue (SAR) lifeboat has officially entered service at the Lifeboat Station in Burgeo, Newfoundland and Labrador.Built by Hike Metal Products in Wheatley, Ontario under Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy, the high-endurance CCGS Gabarus Bay is designed, equipped and crewed to respond to mariners needing assistance at sea.In December 2022, CCGS Gabarus Bay was the 13th SAR lifeboat accepted by the Government of Canada and was delivered to Burgeo in April 2023.

New Lifeboat Enters Service for the Canadian Coast Guard

The Canadian Coast Guard on Wednesday welcomed the CCGS Chedabucto Bay into its fleet at the Lifeboat Station in Clarks Harbour, Nova Scotia.The Bay Class vessel, built by Chantier Naval Forillon in Gaspé, Quebec and delivered earlier this year, is the 14th of 20 new search and rescue lifeboats that will be dedicated into service by the Canadian Coast Guard across the country.The shore-stationed self-righting lifeboats are specifically designed, equipped and crewed to respond to search and rescue incidents at sea.

Supply Chain Advantages for Brazilian-European Trade

After the successful participation in Intermodal South America in Sao Paulo (Brazil), the port of Antwerp in collaboration with the local industrial and agricultural federations organised a business seminar with networking in the nearby state of Minas Gerais. The event was attended by 50 or so prominent Brazilians including shippers, ship's agents and logistics service providers. It was also honoured by the presence of high representatives from both federations, the government of Minas Gerais and the Belgian diplomatic corps in Brazil. Radio Holland Wins Contracts for Canadian Coast Guard Vessels

Radio Holland Canada has won two major contracts to support the Canadian Coast Guard. Public Works and Government Services Canada, which is responsible for government procurement, has awarded Radio Holland Canada a multimillion dollar contract to supply Furuno ECDIS and radars for the Canadian Coast Guard fleet over the next five years. In a separate agreement Hike Metal Products of Wheatley, Ontario has contracted Radio Holland to supply the Navigation & Communication equipment for six new Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Lifeboats.

Ports Toronto Gives Shape to Robert Allan Tug

The Iron Guppy, a new custom 20 metre (65') ice breaking tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver is taking shape at Hike Metal Products Ltd in Wheatley, Ontario. The tug is under construction for Ports Toronto and will replace the 1961 vintage William Rest which has served the port well for many years. Iron Guppy was named by Waterfront Elementary School students from a longlist of names developed by students from kindergarten up to Grade 6. MMK Boosts Steel Shipments to Shipbuilders

OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) supplied 78,000 metric tons of metal products to shipbuilders in 2014, which represents a 37.2% growth year-on-year. MMK supplies up to half of all metal products sold to the Russian shipbuilding industry. Key customers of MMK include companies that are part of such groups as United Shipbuilding Corporation, Oka Shipyard, and Red Barricades Shipbuilding Plant. MMK production of steel for the shipbuilding industry has been expanded following the commissioning of the thick plate Mill 5000 in 2009. The thick plate mill can produce steel used in production for the Russian naval fleet, tankers, modern ice-class vessels.

World’s Largest Containership Arrives in Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg will handle a 19,100-TEU vessel for the first time, as CSCL Globe, currently the world’s largest containership operating in a liner service, is ported in Hamburg from January 13-15 on its maiden voyage deployed in the Europe-East Asia trade. This year, China is due to again further expand its position as Hamburg’s leading trading partner for container traffic, the port noted. On the basis of the first evaluation of 2014 throughput figures for container traffic with China, Port of Hamburg Marketing assumes that the three-million-TEU mark will be reached.

Shallow Federal Policies Produce Even Shallower AIWW Drafts

The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway awaits the chance to rescue the crowded eastern seaboard with a readymade alternative to the parking lot known simply as I-95. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) extends 1,200 miles from Norfolk, Va. to Key West, Fla.. That much is common knowledge. What you may not know is that the U.S. Congress authorized the creation of the AIWW in 1919 and the entire waterway was completed in 1940. Consisting of natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and sounds; others are manmade canals, the canal is included on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark.

Port of Hamburg Receives Eight Newbuildings

The Port of Hamburg receives the first of a total of eight 13,380-TEU COSCO newbuildings at HHLA’s Container Terminal Tollerort. Delivered at the end of February, the completed containership Cosco Belgium  will berth in Hamburg on April 11. Operating under the Hong Kong flag, this ULCC is 366 meters long, 51 meters wide and when fully loaded has a draft of 15.5 meters. She is the first of altogether eight 13,380 TEU (20-feet standard container) vessels ordered by Cosco from the Chinese NACKS shipyard in April 2008.

A Unique new Fireboat for the City of Chicago

In April 2011, The Chicago Fire Department took delivery of a new Fireboat to replace the aging Victor L. Schlaeger. The vessel was named in memory of Firefighter Christopher Wheatley, who lost his life in active duty in 2010. The new vessel was designed by Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver BC, and was built by Hike Metal Products of (serendipitously!) Wheatley, Ontario. This fireboat is one of several fireboats designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and built in Canada for US cities in recent years…

Redundant Spanish Shipyard Workers May Get EU Cash

The European Commission propose to grant €2-million from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help 450 redundant workers in the shipbuilding ancillary industry in Galicia get back into employment. The funds, requested by the Spanish authorities, would help former workers from 35 small and medium sized enterprises. The proposal now goes to the European Parliament and the EU's Council of Ministers for approval. EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion László Andor commented: "The crisis has transformed the shipbuilding sector and much of the industry is moving to low-cost areas, particularly in Asia.
