Metal Trades, Inc. announced the completion of YON 331, the second vessel of a new class of 14,000 barrel double hull fuel barges for the U.S. Navy. The 200-ft x 52-ft barge was designed by Bristol Harbor Group of Bristol, R.I. to carry either Diesel or JP5 Jet Fuel in five cargo tanks. Metal Trades Completes Navy Fuel Barge
Metal Trades, Inc. announced the completion of two double hull Fuel Barges for the U.S. Navy as a sub-contractor to Maybank Industries. The ABS classed 7,000 barrel barges are designed to carry diesel and JP-5 fuel in four cargo tanks within a 180 foot long by 44 foot wide hull. These two barges are being delivered to Pacific Naval Facilities. The two barges (YON-332 and YON-333) were designed by Bristol Harbor Group. Metal Trades will be launching two more double hull barges in 2012 for the same customer, with final delivery to U.S. Naval facilities on the East Coast.
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard's CBA Ratified
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI), the sole operating subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA, announced today that a new four year collective bargaining agreement has been ratified by the Philadelphia Metal Trades Council (PMTC). The PMTC is the exclusive bargaining representative for production and maintenance employees at APSI and consists of ten unions. New Union Agreement for Aker Philadelphia Shipyard
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and the Philadelphia Metal Trades Council aannounced that a new collective bargaining agreement between the union and the shipyard has been ratified by the Philadelphia Metal Trades membership. The new agreement comes after months of determined negotiations between the yard and union leadership and will be effective through January 31, 2011. On the new agreement Dave Meehan, Aker Philadelphia Shipyard President and CEO, remarked, "Our union employees are the backbone of our shipyard, and their hard work and dedication to their crafts are evidenced in the ships we build. This agreement speaks to the commitment of both parties to work together building on our accomplishments to date and looking to the future.
Avondale Workers Approve Agreement
Avondale Shipbuilding employees voted to approve the terms of their first union contract with Litton Industries. The company's 1,500 Metal Trades -represented workers approved the agreement by a four-to-one margin. The 45-month agreement, negotiated by the New Orleans Metal Trades Council, provides an immediate three percent wage hike in January as part of an overall nine percent wage hike paid in three increments. Also in the area of wages, the contract sets up a formal skill progression system that will move the majority of employees into higher-paid categories after working 500 hours in any lower classification. Wages under the agreement range from $8.25/hour for semi-skilled new hires to $16/hour at the top of the highest skill level.
Bristol Designs Two 14k BBL Tank Barges
Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI), has been contracted by Metal Trades, Inc. of Hollywood, South Carolina to design two 14,000 BBL Double Hull Oil Tank Barges to carry ‘D’ and ‘E’ grade fuels for the U.S. Navy. Metal Trades is building the new barges as a sub-contractor to Maybank Industries, LLC based in Charleston, SC. The 200.f ft x 52 ft x 16.5 ft sister vessels are fully compliant with the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and are classed ABS Maltese Cross A1 Oil Tank Barge Unmanned Ocean Service. The first hull, YON 330, has been built and delivered to begin service at the U.S. Naval Fuel Depot.
U.S. Navy Contract for DH Barges

Three “YON” fuel barges and one Ship Waste Offloading Barge (SWOB) will be built, each type with identical 6,900 barrel capacity cargo and double hull configurations. The ABS classed barges are being designed by Bristol Harbor Group of Bristol, RI to be 180 feet long and 44 feet wide. LME Certification for Port of Amsterdam
Port of Amsterdam was awarded an LME certification this week by the London Metal Exchange (LME). From now on, Amsterdam is listed as a goods delivery point for aluminium, aluminium alloy, lead, nickel, tin and zinc. This will enable our terminals and forwarding companies to strengthen their position in the ferro and non-ferro markets for short and deep sea. The application for the certification was submitted by Port of Amsterdam to the London Metal Exchange (LME) in November 2017. The arrival of two ship-to-shore gantry cranes at HCT in the summer of 2017 made this application complete.
AFL-CIO Sues Coast Guard to Block Kit Ships
The Metal Trades Department of the AFL-CIO has sued the U.S. Coast Guard to block controversial rulings that violate the 80-year-old Jones Act to allow U.S. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, charges that a ruling issued on May 24, 2006 and affirmed on November 15, 2006 by the Coast Guard's National Vessel Documentation Center, ignores the requirements of the Jones Act that stipulate that ships moving between U.S. ports must be "built in" the U.S. Shipyards Philadelphia (APSI) and NASSCO, a division of General Dynamics, to produce a series of tankers that are assembled from thousands of parts and modules imported from Korea.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the AFL-CIO accused Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. of undercutting the struggling U.S. shipbuilding industry by using too many foreign-made components in its new vessels. Aker, formerly Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard, denied the allegations, and asserted it is leading the industry's rebirth by expanding its business using mostly local workers and suppliers. The war of words began after the labor federation's Metal Trades Department, representing about 600 Philadelphia shipyard workers, said Thursday that it was asking the Coast Guard to probe Aker's use of components and prefabricated parts from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and other South Korean companies.

An arbitrator certified union representation for 4,100 workers at Litton Industries Inc.'s Avondale shipyard in New Orleans. labor sources said. Avondale workers had been locked in a bitter fight with management over union representation since 1993, but when Litton bought the shipyard in August, the company agreed to remain neutral and let workers sign cards indicating they favored a union. According to reports, the U.S. Department of Defense is planning to implement new labor regulations later this month. But Paul O'Connor, president of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's Metal Trades Council, believes the regulations would give the DOD the power to make policy changes that are non-negotiable and override existing contracts. O'Connor fears the new rules in the National Security Personnel System (NSPS) would adversely affect the labor-management relationship that had helped establish Portsmouth as the most efficient shipyard in the country. In a press release issued Wednesday, US Senator John Sununu of New Hampshire, said he stressed the importance of maintaining the shipyard's labor-management relationship during an introductory meeting with Naval Sea System's new commander.

Citi Has $280m Tied into China Ports at Center of Metals Probe
Citigroup Inc has about $280 million in loans tied to commodities in two Chinese ports which are at the center of a probe into possible fraud, a senior executive said on Friday, becoming the first U.S. bank to disclose its potential exposure. The total is a large portion of the bank's roughly $400 million worth of so-called repo commodity financing deals in China. Short for repurchasing agreements, repo deals give customers access to short-term credit in exchange for goods. "At this stage we believe the activities are isolated and just specific to those very specific locations," Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach said in a conference call with analysts.
StanChart Takes Provision for Suspected Qingdao Fraud
Standard Chartered Plc said its $175 million provision to cover its exposure to suspected commodities fraud in China was the result of a conservative view of possible costs but didn't believe there were widespread problems in the sector. Chinese authorities launched an investigation in May into whether metals trading firm Decheng Mining and related companies used fake warehouse receipts at Qingdao Port to obtain multiple loans secured against a single cargo of metal. "We believe that in the provisioning we have taken we have taken a very conservative approach. Our exposure in the warehouses around Qingdao is around $250 million in total," StanChart Chief Executive Peter Sands told reporters on a call on Wednesday after the London-based bank announced first-half results.
