The 23rd Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame reception and awards dinner took place yesterday evening in New York where five individuals were honored in front of more than 350 of their colleagues from the international maritime transportation industry. The Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey founded the Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame in 1993 to recognize maritime visionaries who, through excellence in their company, organization or services, best exemplify the qualities of futuristic thinking that guides the maritime industry.

Ron Widdows, CEO of Rickmers Group and Rickmers-Linie, was inducted into the Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the global maritime industry. He was one of only six people awarded the honor in a ceremony in New York on May 8, 2013 at a dinner attended by 400 maritime industry colleagues. Other inductees included Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller, Chairman, A.P. Møller-Maersk (posthumous award) and Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York City.

Plans are in hand to convert one of the two diesel oil-fuelled 'Austen-class' ferries to use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). A pilot program conducted on one Staten Island Ferry, if successful, could save the city nearly half the boat's fueling cost annually, reports the 'Staten Island Advance'. An unspecified Austen Class ferry will be converted from using ultra-low-sulfur diesel to liquefied natural gas (LNG) during a routine dry docking in 2013. The Staten Island Ferry received a $2,340,000 federal grant, and the city kicked in additional money to reach $3 million for the conversion.

On May 15, the Municipal Waterfront Alliance sponsored its second port-wide waterfront conference focused on the legal, environmental, infrastructure, redevelopment, commercial, transportation and economic issues facing the Port of New York & New Jersey. The conference took place in the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey and the World Financial Center in New York City -- a short water taxi ride for the participants. The conference was attended by approximately 500 people, including 60 federal, state and local government representatives and stakeholders in the future redevelopment of the port complex. Civilian and military employees of the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command, headquartered in Washington, D.C., took part in the second annual "Run for America" from September 8-11, 2002. They joined hundreds of other employees from throughout the Department of Defense on a 467-mile relay from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., to ground zero in New York City to commemorate the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The relay also route passed through the location of the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, Penn. The entire event took more than 79 hours to complete, with each group of runners covering an average of five miles, and culminated in the presentation of an American flag to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) is moored at pier 88 in New York City during Fleet Week New York 2006.
