US Navy Sailors Reflect on Capt Phillips Rescue

U.S. Navy sailors aboard amphibious assault ship USS Boxer took time to reflect on the anniversary of the rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden seven years ago. Phillips was rescued April 12, 2009 by special operations personnel aboard USS Bainbridge and transferred to Boxer for medical evaluation and care. Boxer also served as a staging platform for the rescue operation. “This is a great reminder of the flexibility and warfighting spirit USS Boxer exhibits; always ready to respond, no matter the crisis, operation or mission,” said Capt.

Navy to Christen Littoral Combat Ship Sioux City

The Navy will christen its newest Freedom variant littoral combat ship, USS Sioux City (LCS 11), during a 10 a.m. CST ceremony Saturday, Jan. 30 in Marinette, Wisconsin. Sioux City, designated LCS 11, honors the city of Sioux City, Iowa. Adm. Michelle Howard, vice chief of Naval Operations, will serve as principal speaker. Mary Winnefeld, wife of retired Adm. James “Sandy” Winnefeld, will serve as the ship’s sponsor. The ceremony will be highlighted by Winnefeld breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow to formally christen the ship, which is a time-honored Navy tradition. "The christening and launch of LCS 11, the future USS Sioux City, marks an important step toward this great warship's entry into the fleet," said The Honorable Ray Mabus, secretary of the Navy.

First Woman VCNO Visits Naval Support Activity Naples

Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michelle Howard visited Sailors aboard Naval Support Activity Naples, March 6, 2015. While on board, Howard took time to visit U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, served as the keynote speaker at the Women's History Month Symposium, provided remarks for the 2015 Combined Force Maritime Component Commander (CFMCC) Flag Course Africa, and conducted an all-hands call for more than 300 Naples-based Sailors. Navy Leaders: Uncertainty Will Drive Innovation

Department of Navy leaders at the Naval Future Force Science and Technology (S&T) EXPO in Washington D.C., February 5 called for investment in new ideas and scientific research to keep the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps technologically superior in increasingly uncertain times. Sean J. Stackley, assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, said tight budgets at home and technological advances by other nations must be met with a powerful response grounded in innovation from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps S&T community.

Navy Christens Littoral Combat Ship Montgomery

The Navy will christen littoral combat ship (LCS) Montgomery Nov. 8 during a ceremony at the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Alabama. Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. US Military Officials Speak About Forward Presence

Leading officials from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard spoke about operating forward and being partners with global presence at the 2014 Navy League Sea-Air-Space Exposition at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., April 7. The Sea-Air-Space Expo is an annual event that brings together key military decision makers, the U.S. defense industrial base and private-sector U.S. companies for an innovative and educational maritime based event. Navy Updates Plans for a Changing Arctic

"This updated Navy Arctic Roadmap prepares the U.S. Navy to respond effectively to future contingencies, delineates the Navy's Arctic leadership role within the Defense Department, and articulates the Navy's support to achieve national priorities," writes Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert in the Roadmap introduction. In the coming decades, as multi-year sea ice in the Arctic Ocean recedes, previously unreachable areas may open for maritime use for a few weeks each year.

US Fleet Forces Command (USFF) names Rear Adm. Ann Phillips, & Rear Adm. Joseph Tofalo to enquire into 'San Jacinto/Montpelier' collision. U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) assigned a flag officer to lead an administrative investigation and established a safety board to review the facts and circumstances Oct. 15 that led to the collision between the Navy submarine USS Montpelier and Aegis cruiser USS San Jacinto off the coast of Florida Oct. 13. Singapore Navy Joins Counterpiracy CTF 151

A Singaporean counterpiracy task group joined Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 this week and began conducting operations alongside other Coalition naval forces off the coast of Somalia. Commanded by Navy Col. Bernard Miranda, the Singaporean task group includes the Landing Ship Tank (LST), RSS Persistence (209), and joins other naval forces currently conducting counterpiracy operations as part of CTF 151. "Extensive international coordination is the key to maximizing the maritime counterpiracy mission," said Rear Adm. Michelle Howard, commander, CTF 151.

Piracy Task Force, New Commander

Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 2 held a change of command ceremony aboard USS Boxer (LHD 4) April 5. Rear Adm. Michelle Howard relieved Rear Adm. Terence McKnight, ESG 2's commander since November 2007. In addition to relieving McKnight as the ESG 2 commander, Howard assumed command of several U.S. 5th Fleet task forces, including Combined Task Force (CTF) 51 and 59, as well as CTF 151, an international maritime coalition created to disrupt, deter and thwart piracy. "I'm very fortunate to follow behind Admiral McKnight," said Howard. "He and the staff have done a terrific job in standing up CTF 151.
