UK Strikes Ferry Deals to Ensure Supply of Medicines after Brexit

Britain said on Friday it had signed deals worth 86.6 million pounds ($109.50 million) with shipping firms to ensure the supply of vital medicines in the event of border chaos after the country leaves the European Union.The country's transport ministry said the six-month contracts meant that Brittany Ferries, DFDS, P&O and Stena Line would be ready to deliver capacity equivalent to thousands of lorries each week from the Oct.

ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

Bill Reintroduces to Permanently Ban North Coast Drilling

On Jan 11, Congressman Mike Thompson (D-North Coast) reintroduced legislation that would permanently prohibit oil and gas drilling off the coasts of Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The Northern California Ocean and Coastal Protection Act protects the marine environment along the Northern Coast of California’s outer continental shelf (OCS) from off shore drilling. Congressman Thompson also introduced this legislation in the 111th Congress. “It is critical that we permanently protect our coast and its vital marine life from the environmental hazards of off-shore drilling,” said Congressman Thompson. “In past Congresses, this important issue has become a political dispute rather than a debate on legitimate policy.
