Wicker’s SHIPS Act Included in Defense Bill

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Chairman of the Senate Seapower Subcommittee, announced that he successfully added his “SHIPS Act” proposal to help the Navy reach its requirement of a 355-ship fleet in this year’s “National Defense Authorization Act” (NDAA). The Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously approved the national defense bill, authorizing $640 billion in overall funding for America’s servicemembers, military installations and industrial base. It now awaits consideration by the full Senate.

USS America: LHA with an Aviation Focus

The U.S. Navy’s newest Amphibious Assault Ship, USS America (LHA 6) was commissioned on October 11, 2014 at Pier 30-32 in San Francisco. BAE Systems Land & Armaments, LP, Ground Systems Division, York, Pa., is being awarded $44,339,800 for firm fixed priced delivery order #0004 under previously awarded contract for the purchase of 89 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle Category I United States Special Operations Command Variants and vehicle sustainment Integrated Logistic Support. BAE Systems Land & Armaments, LP, Ground Systems Division, York, Pa., is being awarded $278,441,800 firm fixed priced delivery order #0005 under previously awarded contract for the purchase of 399 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Category II vehicles and 112 MRAP Category II Ambulance Variant vehicles. Work will be performed in York, Pa., and work is expected to be completed by April 2008. Contract funds will not expire by the end of the current fiscal year. Force Protection Industries Awarded Contract Worth $376.6M

Force Protection Industries, Inc., Ladson, S.C., is being awarded $376,644,117 for firm-fixed-priced delivery order #0006 under a previously awarded contract for the purchase of 553 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Category I vehicles and 247 MRAP Category II vehicles and vehicle sustainment Integrated Logistic Support. Work will be performed in Ladson, S.C., and work is expected to be completed April 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. International Military and Government Wins $509M Contract

International Military and Government LLC (IMG), Warrenville, Ill., is being awarded $509m for firm-fixed-priced delivery order #0005 under previously awarded contract for 1,000 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Category I Low Rate Initial Production vehicles. Category I is a MRAP vehicle used by the Marine Corps and other Joint Forces for convoy operations. The MRAP vehicles are required to increase the survivability and mobility of troops operating in hazardous fire areas against known threats such as improvised explosive devices, small arms fire and mines. Work will be performed in West Point, Miss., and work is expected to be completed April 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured.

DoN Budget Request for FY08 Addresses Near and Long-term Needs

The nation’s top Navy and Marine Corps leaders told members of Congress March 1 that the Department of the Navy’s (DoN) proposed $139.8 billion budget request for fiscal year 2008 (FY08) fully supports near and long-term warfighting requirements and will help win the global war on terror (GWOT). In testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Donald C. Winter, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Mike Mullen and Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James Conway thanked lawmakers and the American people for their continued support and stressed the impact of DoN’s FY08 budget request on future readiness.

CNO: Supplemental Budget Supports Navy GWOT Efforts

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen told lawmakers Feb. 13 that the Navy’s proposed $8.9 billion Emergency Wartime Supplemental request for fiscal year 2007 (FY07) will help the service reset and equip the force while staying ahead of the demands of current combat operations. “The Navy is doing its part in this long war, Mr. Chairman,” said Mullen in testimony to members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. “I am proud of that.
