Lockheed Martin Signs $59M Contract for Antisubmarine Weapon

Lockheed Martin announced today that Japan has purchased a seventh lot of Vertical Launch Antisubmarine (VLA) rockets valued at $59.8 million. Lockheed Martin will deliver the VLAs to Mitsubishi Corporation, Tokyo, in 2005 for transfer to Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force for use on Kongo- and Murasame-class ships. "The consecutive contracts awarded to us by Mitsubishi signify the important defense capability that VLAs provide the Japanese Maritime Self- Defense Force," said Al Barber, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin's Maritime Systems & Sensors business in Akron, OH. "Since 1997, we have been entrusted with providing a key system in Japan's antisubmarine warfare arsenal.

Lockheed Martin Receives $67M Contract for VLS

Lockheed Martin has been awarded an initial $67 million contract to continue production, delivery and installation of the MK 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) for the U.S. Navy. The contract includes production of launchers for two Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) Aegis-equipped destroyers, as well as a major upgrade of five other destroyers already equipped with MK 41 VLS. An additional contract option of $129 million for U.S. Navy and Foreign Military Sales requirements in support of Korea’s KDX-III shipbuilding program could raise the contract's total value to $196 million. United Defense, L.P. of Aberdeen, SD, will be issued a major subcontract to produce major subassemblies for the MK 41 VLS, as will Metric Systems in Fort Walton Beach, FL.

Chinese Navy to Get 3 New Submarines

China will soon be commissioning three new nuclear-powered attack submarines which will be the most advanced in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) navy to date. With the capability to fire supersonic anti-ship missiles, they will be China’s most advanced Type-093G attack submarines. China Central Television has aired satellite images showing the three submarines anchored at an unidentified port. The submarines are said to be an upgrade of the Type-093, which entered service several years ago and advancements include a longer teardrop hull and a vertical missile launching system.

Sea SLICE Provides Glimpse of Future

As first reported in the July edition of Maritime Reporter & Engineering News, Lockheed Martin's Sea SLICE advanced technology demonstration vessel recently provided the Navy a sneak peak of a small, fast, stable ship with multi-mission modularity in its role as a Littoral Combat Ship surrogate in the Navy's Fleet Battle Experiment - Juliet, which took place along the San Diego coast from July 24 - August 7. Arriving in San Diego with no combat systems aboard in early June, the ship was transformed in less than a month into a bristling littoral combatant complete with: the 35-mm Millennium Gun; NetFires missile launching system; FLIR Systems Inc.

North Korea Test Fires Submarine Missile

North Korea test fired a submarine-based ballistic missile (SLBM) from its east coast on Wednesday, CNN reports quoting South Korean authorities. The missile flew about 500 kilometres before splashing into the Sea of Japan — the first missile of its kind to reach such a distance. The launch took place at 5:30 a.m. local time, according to a statement from the South Korean Foreign Ministry. The South Korean government and experts said the launch showed technical progress in the North's SLBM program. Having the ability to fire a missile from a submarine could help North Korea evade a new anti-missile system planned for South Korea and pose a threat even if nuclear-armed North Korea's land-based arsenal was destroyed, experts said.

North Korea Fires Missiles in Show of Force

Missiles flew far enough to reach any part of S.Korea. North Korea fired three ballistic missiles on Tuesday which flew between 500 and 600 km (300-360 miles) into the sea off its east coast, South Korea's military said, the latest in a series of provocative moves by the isolated country. The U.S. military said it detected launches of what it believed were two Scud missiles and one Rodong, a home-grown missile based on Soviet-era Scud technology. North Korea has fired both types numerous times in recent years, an indication that unlike recent launches that were seen as efforts by the North to improve its missile capability, Tuesday's were meant as a show of force.

Lockheed Martin Develops SCL

Lockheed Martin and teammate United Defense, LP, have used experience with the MK 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) to develop a new Single Cell (SCL) launcher. The SCL is intended for ships either too small for the traditional eight-cell MK 41 or with mission requirements not requiring an eight-cell launcher. The SCL will provide an affordable solution for improved ship self defense requirements on aircraft carriers, large-deck amphibious ships, and other smaller surface combatants, such as corvettes and frigates. SCL is based on proven MK 41 technology and incorporates the latest Baseline VII Launch Control System (LCS), and other Computer-off-the-Shelf (COTS) components.

Navy Awards Lockheed Martin $248 Million Contract

The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin Space Systems-Missiles & Space Operations, Sunnyvale, Calif., a $248 million contract for the follow-on production of 12 Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missiles (FBM) and start of the D5 service life extension (LE) program. Production of the missiles will begin in 2002, with an expected delivery to the Navy in 2004. Since serial production began in 1987, the U.S. Navy has purchased 396 TRIDENT II D5 submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

N.Korea Fires Missiles Again, S.Korea Delays THAAD

Missiles flew about 200 km into sea off east coast - S.Korea; launch is fourth by Pyongyang in four weeks. North Korea fired what appeared to be several land-to-ship missiles off its east coast on Thursday, South Korea's military said, a day after the South postponed full deployment of a controversial U.S. anti-missile system designed to deter a North Korean attack. The launches, the latest in a fast-paced series of missile tests defying world pressure to rein in its weapons programme, come less than a week after the United Nations Security Council passed fresh sanctions on the reclusive state. Pacific Centre Launches on Low-Carbon Shipping Mission

The Pacific region has celebrated the launch of a centre of excellence for low-carbon shipping technology, which joins centres in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America as part of a global network run by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and funded by the European Union. Through this network – the Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Network (GMN) – these centres will develop and promote low-carbon maritime transport systems, supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Raytheon Missile Systems Awarded $8.3M Contract

Raytheon Missile Systems Co., Tucson, Ariz., is being awarded an $8,315,500 modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract to exercise an option for 100 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) Command Launch Computer (CLC) systems in support of F/A-18E/F and EA-18G platforms. Work will be performed in Tucson, Ariz., and is expected to be completed in September 2009. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting activity.

Poland Seeks Cruise Missile for Submarines

Poland is planning to get advanced cruise missiles for its submarines, the country’s defense minister has said, implying that the NATO member state is taking precautionary measures against a rising Russian threat, says a report in AP. DD(X) Tests Peripheral Vertical Launching System

The DD(X) system design team led by Northrop Grumman Corporation has executed a major risk reduction test on its peripheral vertical launching system (PVLS) magazine within three months after work began on the contract. DD(X) is the U.S. destroyer, DD(X). costs. The PVLS test article is a full-scale assembly that was fabricated at Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems' facility in Pascagoula, Miss. Once built, the article was transported to a facility in Aberdeen, Md., to be staged, instrumented and loaded with representative ordnance. Ship Systems proposed a PVLS alternative to the traditional VLS configuration of centralized missile magazines.

Australian Navy Commissions Hobart (II) – One in a Million

Royal Australian Navy will commission the first of three new destroyers today (On 23 September). In continuing our reflective stories of previous ships that have carried the name HMAS Hobart, this is the story of Hobart (II). The second ship to bear the name Hobart was one of three Perth class guided missile destroyers built in the United States for the Royal Australian Navy. She was commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard on 18 December 1965 under the command of Captain Guy Griffiths.

The Royal Australian Navy Adelaide class frigate HMAS Melbourne fired two Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles as part of an operational training exercise reinforcing her war-fighting and mariner skills. The missiles were fired off the coast of New South Wales on June 24 against two unmanned aerial targets launched from the Beecroft Range at Jervis Bay. Melbourne’s MK-41 Vertical Launch System deployed the missiles, controlled in flight, resulting in a successful engagement with the target as part of her operational training program.

Melbourne Fires Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles

The Royal Australian Navy Adelaide class frigate, HMAS Melbourne, has successfully fired two Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles, reinforcing her war-fighting and mariner skills. The missile firings were conducted off the coast of New South Wales on 24 June against two unmanned aerial targets launched from the Beecroft Range at Jervis Bay. Melbourne’s MK-41 Vertical Launch System deployed the missiles, controlled in flight, resulting in a successful engagement with the target as part of her operational training program.

India's BrahMos Missile Test-Fired From New Naval Ship

The world's fastest cruise missile - Supersonic cruise missile BrahMos - successfully hit decommissioned target ship 'Alleppey' located at a distance covering nearly the full range of the missile with high precision, India's defence officials said. Launch of BrahMos was part of an acceptance testing-firing during a Naval drill being conducted on the west coast. A press release said the missile, after performing high-level and complex manoeuvres, hit a decommissioned target ship “Alleppey” which was stationed 290 km away, the missile’s full range.
