Jebel Ali Port Become Distribution Hub for Dow Chemical

Marine terminal operator DP World, UAE Region, has reached an agreement with an affiliate of The Dow Chemical Company based in Jebel Ali to support the distribution of Dow‘s products. The contract was signed recently by Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of DP World, UAE Region, and Moosa Al-Moosa, President of Dow UAE in Jebel Ali in the presence of senior officials from both organizations. Under the agreement, DP World will provide Dow with value-added services such as Jebel Ali Port’s storage facilities and shipping to its customers globally.

DP World Receives 1st Scheduled Vessel at New Terminal

DP World has yesterday welcomed the first scheduled vessel to call at its new Container Terminal 3 in Jebel Ali, Dubai, as it gears up to serve customers at the state-of-the-art facility. 5 Quay Cranes Arrive At DP WORLD’S Jebel Ali Terminal

Global marine terminal operator DP World today announced that its new Container Terminal 3 at its flagship Jebel Ali Port is making good progress with the arrival of 5 new quay cranes and half of its 19 automated cranes being tested before the start of initial operations in the next few weeks. The 4 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) capacity of Terminal 3, makes it the world’s largest semi-automated facility once fully operational. Terminal 3 has seen a number of developments since its inauguration by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in January.

DP World Chairman welcomes mega-vessel to Jebel Ali port's new 1 million TEU Terminal 2 expansion. HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World, officially opened the new extension to Container Terminal 2 (T2) at flagship Jebel Ali Port, welcoming one of the largest container ships afloat, the MSC La Spezia. A red carpet welcome was given to the 366-metre long vessel, which has 14,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent container units) capacity. The expansion adds 1 million TEU to take capacity at Jebel Ali Port to 15 million TEU, extending the T2 quay wall by 400 metres to 3,000 metres.

It is impossible to view the global container shipping business without looking at it through the prism of vessel capacity being added to the market. What happens over the next two years will be a direct result of the glut of newbuildings that are flooding into service and wrecking freight rates. Just consider these numbers. During the first four months of 2013, Alphaliner puts the new containership deliveries at 496,000 TEUs. According to data supplied by PR News Service ComPort, almost 250,000 TEUs of that will be comprised of vessels with a nominal capacity of 10,000 TEUs and up.

Dubai's Ports Container Throughput Milestone

DP World celebrates the 100 millionth container to pass through DP World, UAE Region terminals in ten years. The 100 million TEU record was achieved between January 2003 and January 2013 and covers all container boxes handled in both Mina Rashid and Jebel Ali Port. DP World, UAE Region’s annual container throughput increased more than 150% over the decade, from around five million TEU in 2003 to 13.3 million TEU in 2012. In all, the two container ports have handled 135 million TEU since the opening of Jebel Ali Port in 1979, around 75% of it since 2003. Jebel Ali Mega Ship Expansion on Track

Last of the 65 ton blocks that make up the foundation of the extended quay wall of the 1 million TEU expansion laid in place. The Jebel Ali port expansion, scheduled to open for business in the second quarter of 2013, extends the quay wall by 400 metres to 3000 metres, allowing the simultaneous handling of six 15000 TEU mega ships. Meanwhile, across the harbour from Terminal 2, work is also well underway on the brand new, state of the art, 4 million TEU capacity Terminal 3, set to open in 2014, taking Jebel Ali’s total capacity to 19 million TEU.

DP World Orders Operating System for Jebel Ali Terminal

CyberLogitec, a Korea-based IT company to provide its OPUS Terminal Operating System (TOS) for Terminal 3, at the expanding port complex. OPUS TOS has modules to support the sophisticated operational requirements of the new terminal as well as interfaces to other existing systems at the port to provide seamless services to customers. Container Terminal 3, with a quay length of 1,860 metres, a draft of 17 metres, and a 70 hectare storage yard, will be equipped with 19 Ship To Shore (STS) quay cranes and 50 Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes.

DP World orders cranes for its new Jebel Ali container terminal from international and local suppliers. DP World, UAE Region signs agreements with local and international companies for the supply of 19 Ship To Shore (STS) quay cranes and 50 Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes for its 4 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity Terminal 3 development at the flagship Jebel Ali Port. The new container terminal will be 1,860 metres long, with a depth of 17 metres to handle multiple next generation container liners simultaneously, and a 70 hectare yard.

Middle East Port Upgrade

DP World, UAE Region announce  completion of the first phase of the Al Hamriya port development plans aimed at modernising and upgrading the port to meet customers and fishermen’s growing needs. The first phase now opened includes the upgrading of 1 million square feet of yard, which has been paved, metal fenced, and gated. These open yards  are now available for lease for traders and logistics companies. The second phase includes a modern facility for the exclusive use of the fishing industry at the port. Construction work has already begun on the facility and is due to be completed this year. The development will create a new 1,650-metre long wharf with a capacity to accommodate 190 fishing boats.

Giant Container Ship Calls at DP World Port

The largest container ship of French shipping company CMA CGM, the Christophe Colomb, recently called at DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali Port for the first time, reinforcing the port’s role as a regional gateway for the new generation of mega liner vessels. The 365-metre long ship, which has a nominal capacity of 13,800 twenty-foot equivalent container units, or TEU, was welcomed by DP World officials. A plaque marking the occasion was presented by DP World UAE Region account manager Ravikumar Panicker to Master of the Ship Pierre Gilles Coat, in the presence of senior officials.

3G Communication Service Launched in Jebel Ali Port

In line with its commitment to constantly improve operational efficiencies for customers, global marine terminal operator DP World has introduced 3G internet service for container liner operators calling at its flagship Jebel Ali Port. Jebel Ali is among the first global ports to offer this vital communication service using the 3rd generation mobile telecommunications (3G) service in operations. The enhanced e-service enables carriers to connect to the port through the Dubai Trade portal www.dubaitrade.ae and quickly file BAPLIE (Bay Plan/Stowage Plan of Occupied and Empty Spaces) information as the vessel departs for Jebel Ali, or acquire the data for onward ports. The data identifies each container and its location, and also identifies spaces available on board the vessel.

Port Operator Wins Middle East Award

The Minister of Public Works of the United Arab Emirates has recognised DP World, UAE Region, with two prestigious awards for its commitment to security at its port facilities. The premier regional port operator won the “Distinctive Management in Seaports Sector” and “Excellence in Seaports Sector Training” awards at the Higher Committee’s annual awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi. Jebel Ali Port Handles Simultaneous Visits by Mega Ships

For the second time in a week, global marine terminal operator DP World welcomed and simultaneously handled two mega container vessels at its flagship Jebel Ali Port, reinforcing its relentless efforts and capability to continuously meet customers’ demands. The ships, MSC Beatrice and MSC Lauren, sailed in within 10 hours of each other, barely a week after the MSC Daniella and the MSC Bettina. All the four vessels are owned by Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and, at 366 meters long each, they are counted among the largest container liners in the world.
